If they spent more on engineering, they would need to spend less on lawyers. I guess if they skimp on engineering and spend a bit more on legal fees they still come out in front. Remember you are not a valued customer, you're a number, and just a small one in the scheme of things.

Thanks John, it’s very refreshing to hear this. The auto trade is a bit of a conspiracy, the commercial media ALWAYS goes soft on these manufacturers because they rely on advertising from those same manufacturers. Poor old consumers are left trying to figure out what’s going on- I had a similar experience with VW were they straight up bare faces denied everything (I sweated they’d deny the sky is blue if it wasn’t in their interests to do so) and just played brinkmanship knowing they’d win. Of course I will NEVER buy another VW after that experience and it sounds like Ford may have a similar moral compass.

FWIW, we have two 10R80's in the family. One in my 2018 3.5EB F150, and the other in my son's 2021 Ranger. Both transmissions have been absolute champs. I've towed quite a bit in my F150, hauling a 6,500lb travel trailer through the Rocky Mountains. No issues at all with either transmission.

I suffered the 6R80 and Fraud replaced 2 of them. The third or turd let go at 155000klms in reality it had only travelled 85000klms. So after 3 transmissions and backup support from fraud that was shameful I wish anybody well who thinks a 10R80 might be a better bet. It's a bit like the Datsun 200B that replaced the 180B. 20 new faults and problems to live with.

Did you ever service the 6 speed auto transmission? The trans oil only last about 50,000km and its comes out black. Ford recommend 250,000km service which is an absolute joke. The tranny torque converter slips that much it just burns oil fast especiall if towing. Best to put in the bypass valve and tyranny cooler and then get a tune on it to stop it slipping. Then it's decent.
@farken7467
@farken7467 2 жыл бұрын
@@marcusbarnes5929 I sure did and at 85000 I thought a transmission was due. It had not towed but lived on the freeway. That's when disaster was discovered. I've been told and read all sorts of tales about what causes it. Mostly it's down to a fault in the design of the torque converter. Post May 2015 models don't suffer from it and the Chinese made transmission in the petrol doesn't suffer either, only the US made 6R80 and history repeats itself. The new Ranger looks the goods but I wouldn't risk my money on one.

@SevenSixTwo2012 Жыл бұрын
I bought a used 2014 ex-police truck with over 200,000 kms on it and it's got the 6R80 in it coupled to a V8 engine. Trans has never been serviced before, as when I dropped the pan to change the fluid + filter, both were black and dirty. The trans shifts perfectly with zero issues, like it's new. These transmissions are of the heavy duty type and have been used in commercial applications, such as Ford's cube trucks. It is by far the most reliable combo when coupled with the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine. These transmissions do have an issue before a certain year with the valve body assembly, but that's a fairly easy fix with updated parts from Ford. Keeping clean fluid in the 6R80's is crucial, as dirty fluid (metal clutch particles) sticks to solenoids and sensors, causing this trans to do weird things such as downshift at speed or even lock the wheels while driving. This does not happen with clean fluid, or with the updated valve body installed.

does not work that way. close ratio gears are always preferred over long ratio gears for one simple fact, torque curve, a close ratio gears transmission will always be in the engine sweet spot where efficiency and speed are at optimal levels, the older 4-sped autos were basically 3 direct drives with 1 over drive which needed short final drive ratio to keep engine revs in the torque curve range which is not good for efficiency.

I saw the head of the design team for Ford's 10 speed transmission in the release video of the first version of this trans... He stated that the design parameters were: 1 To make this transmission the same size as the 4 speed. 2 To make this transmission lighter than the old 4 speed. 3 to rate it for a heavier or identical load as the 4 speed and he seemed very proud his departments achievement in time and under budget. I don't remember him saying anything about durability or whether it was still going to be cost reduced. But 6 more forward gears, in a trans the same size and lighter than a 4 speed tells me something has to give. Why am I not surprised that it's durability and reliability especially after the bean counters got though with cost reducing the components and outsourcing the parts manufacturing to the lowest bidders. While I agree that electronics can be compacted and improved, size and weight matter in mechanical systems. For example, everyone knows that you can replace a 27 mm bolt with a 10 mm bolt and it will be smaller, lighter and cheaper. But will it hold your wheel on when you hit a big pot hole? I don't believe that engineers have gotten stupider, it's just that design parameters have changed and reliability and durability aren't critical design criterions any more. It's all about features, specs, compliance, profit and price point.

John sir... In my country T6 Ranger is one of popular pick-up (ute) truck around.. however most reliable bunch is 6 speed auto with 2.2 puma.... Much reliable than newer engine. The newer 2.0 bi turbo with 10 speed auto is atrocious... Jerking issue, always at limbo mode, some engines do crack at cylinder head...turbos with sequential problems... Compressor wheel suspicious malfunction after warranty...list goes on for miles... Many with 2.0 bi turbo utes just perform as vanity mirror, symbol status not used as workhorse at gravel or mud tracks... Just occasionally go through flooded places during monsoon...

To be fair, the real problem with Ford's R&D isn't in the engineering department - it's the beancounters refusing to give the engineers a big enough budget to do the job properly. It's horrifying to think this mentality is the reason why the Pinto was such a disaster, yet Ford continues operate this way nearly half a century later.

Gears closer together actually put less strain on the transmission as it's less of a jump to the next gear and also keeps the RPM in the sweet spot.. Think of gears on a 10 speed mountain bike ...the more gears the easier it goes to the next gear when pedaling while gaining more speed and forward drive not noticing any extra strain... Now start off on a 4 speed mountain bike in 1st and jump to 4th gear and feel the strain immediately and rpm pedal rotation significantly drop out of the sweet spot range placing more straing on drive line.. Driving the ranger 6 speed to the 10 speed huge difference in gear changing speed and lag.

So you want a work truck that can tow 3.5 t ? So is a ten speed gearbox the right choice? I suggest the humble Ute is trying to be everything for everyone. If you are consistently carrying/ towing heavy loads ask yourself do you want a mechelectroic control system hunting through ten gears? If you have an appreciation of how an auto trans works then you can understand how many clutch plates are applying/ releasing pressure to select the gear for performance but an overriding priority for economy. If you still wish to buy this vehicle then find out how many of the ten gears are overdrive , so when towing heavy loads limit the gearbox to gears that are not overdrive. Example if 8, 9, 10 are overdrive, tow in 7 max. Also stay away from using cruise control. I would rather pay a few extra $ in fuel then having to pay for a transmission overhaul.

@@NNoradIV I’m assuming you are referring to a 4 speed transmission? If so, most 4 speeds would not have an overdrive top gear. 4th would normally be a ratio of 1 to 1. So that is fine when towing. I remember a service advisor telling me when I worked at Fred as a mechanic in 2001 that they were saving $2 per AU Falcon by not galvanising the body fully and it was cheaper to repair the rusty cars under warranty. Cause cars rusting at 5 years? Not fords problem. Those car rattling around Alice springs or mount Isa? Never going to rust so that’s $2 saved there.

The manufacturers have only themselves to blame. The 10 spd auto trans was a problem right from the start but they were bullheaded & continued to push it. Therefore they get everything they deserve from this lemon. A 10 spd tranny is not needed in a passenger car or a pickup truck. The more complex these modern machines become, the liklihood of something going wrong increases. A 10spd tranny does not save gas. It continually changes gears all the time to meet the needs of the road. Some of these transmissions are wearing themselves out after 40-50,000 miles. A sensible five speed tranny with sensible chosen ratios would be a much safer bet. That, or a 2spd rear axle in the pickup trucks would increase gas mileage.

Hi John, At the time of posting this report my wife, 3 year old daughter and I are enduring this very problem 3,500 klms from home(half way to Dingo piss creek). For more than 5 weeks now we have been hold up in Alice Springs while Ford have a mass debate, argue and deny what needs to be done. That is not with us, but with themselves. We, have been lied too, fed bullshit, told every excuse under the sun and still we wait. The parts division that are responsible for the generation of the order sheet sent to the dealer, have for more than 3 weeks refused to send the replacement shaft and its associated parts as they have a limited number of them in stock and are only distributing them where absolutely needed. Apparently a family stuck in the center of Australia aren't a priority. All under warranty so that's a plus, but a vehicle with under 40,000 ks just shouldn't have an issue like this. A couple of bonus points to note. We have been told both the Hydraulic pump and input shaft have (since late 2019) been upgraded (I hope so). Through Ford Care we have been given a nice rental Ford Everest with the same 10 speed to use. So far so good. They are also picking up the tab for our accommodation. Ford have finally organised the delivery of the parts and we have been told the Ranger should be back on the road by the 8th September, just shy of 7 weeks after the Torque converter went poopy in it's pants. We are not amused

My question is why do you need a 10 speed transmission in the first place. the greater the complexity the more potential for failure. Its a smallish truck whats wrong with a 4 speed over drive, or a 5 speed manual. If the auto makers made engines with longer strokes and bigger fly wheels they would deliver more touque at lower rpm. This would give exceptable power with less gears. slower running engines last longer. and use less fuel. This is why Engines like the 5.9 cumins diesels will last up to a million miles. My 1994 cumins dodge runs at 1800 rpm at 100 kph Gets 22mpg not that bad for a 30year old 6000 lb truck.That truck will pull a 20' holiday trailer up a hill without shifting out of high gear. you dont need a 10 speed transmission, your not hauling 24000 lbs down the road like a semi. this is utter nonesence. 39 year mechanic here not some amature.

Why don't you do a segment on the recalls by Hyundai/ Kia that includes faulty heaters, exploding seat belts or towing harness fires instead of your constant BS about Ford. You can include Toyota and its new EV that people have been told not to drive because of risk the wheels can come off, as far as Kia/Hyundai owners they've been told to park cars always from buildings because of the risk of fire. Stick to selling products, you're getting tiresome shit canning other makes and now telling people not to buy a car because something might go wrong in the future with no information or facts. WAW 🤡

For what it's worth, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has had the 10L90 (higher max torque spec than the 10L80) since 2017 with practically zero complaints from owners, apart from very minor imperfections that are barely noticed even by enthusiasts. The main difference appears to be in the transmission tune that was produced separately by GM and Ford for their respective applications.

Buying a 4cyl wildtrack full spec in Thailand for $46000 drive away which I think is closer to what these Utes are actually worth. Wouldn't have one in Australia( $75000) as I don't need or want a ute and after test driving the D max, triton , and Ford which was the pick drive wise I have no idea why anyone would burden themselves with any of these unless you absolutely need one. Getting back in the wife's i30N Line after testing these was a relief and made the Hyundai like a premium brand.

New Gen Ranger now has the 10R60 version of the 10-speed torque converter transmission, the main changes from the 10R80 are: - new torque converter that can handle up to 800Nm - different shift mapping - no longer has a "sports" mode" - manual mode gear lockout for over-drive gears (8, 9 & 10) which means you can lock out the over-drive gears - new adaptive logic control for the specific "drive" modes. That said there fundamental issue remains, the transmission fluid pump was not changed, the 10R60 core design is the same as the 10R80 so the best solution is transmission service ever 80,000km.
@angusmacgyver1390
@angusmacgyver1390 2 жыл бұрын
The main issue with the 10R80 is that the thermostatic spring valve doesn't always open at the correct temperature range going above the 90-95'C capable of reaching temperatures of 121'C. the thinning of the fluid at those temperatures leaves the clutch plates to dry and touch each other and causes the harsh gear changes, this stresses the pumps pressure vanes in surges and can cause them to fail. Australian Ford dealers currently recommends changing transmission Fluids at 60,000km on the Ranger series of vehicles for any heavy towing vehicle use, but if you didn't notice that puts it out of the normal fixed cost period of the new car maintenance scheme costing about $600 minimum just for that service alone

I have a 10R80 and its a great performer. It has a little extra slip at lower speeds than i like, BUT mine has a problem that doesnt seem to be terribly common. Overnight the torque converte drains so when you start in the morning, the engine is not connected to the wheels and rolls backward for about 10 seconds while revving at 2500 rpm. Like clutch fully in for 2-3 car lengths until it picks up. Both Ford dealers in Sydney say this is normal, even having seen the video of it, which goes to what John says about ford being less than helpful. Only got some attention when i said what if it rolls back and hits a child. If this is normal, who did the risk assessment considering how many 10R80's are out there. Still battling and going back in tomorrow, even after a full solenoid valvebody and control module replacement. Would be interested to see if others have experienced this.

Great review. I have the 2019 Ford Everest 2.0l 10speed. 80,000kms. Has the 10R80 transmission. 2.5 weeks ago on a rural road I got a dash warning light "Transmission Overheat" and lost full engine power. Had to ditch the car into the road verge. If I was on the Pacific Highway or the Hume I could have been killed. Dealt with Ford Care and car towed to Kloster Ford Raymond Terrace. The issue was originally identified as needing a new transmission, then identified as being able to be fixed by replacing the valve covers. Now its the failure of the transmission pumps which need to be replaced and which requires the transmission to be removed. I've asked Ford Motor Company Australia for a replacement vehicle or refund under Australian Consumer Law. In the only written communication from them or Klosters they have refused the request despite not being able to tell me when the car will. be fixed. From a lay person's perspective it seems like a major defect. They have also disputed the fact that the car should have been recalled for this exact issue despite the VIN being listed in the recall published by the Department of Transport (REC-00320). It's not over yet. And yeah I could have been killed by a known issue that was not fixed.

let's not also forget that the ZF 6-speed that Ford Australia used in Territory and Falcon (i6 not the turbo 4 Falcon) were also having "milkshake" issues especially if people added aftermarket towing options and not upgrading the transmission with a transmission cooler. the Ecoboost Falcon had a different version of the ZF 6-speed that was made in China. Ford also licenced a version of the ZF 6-speed for previous gen Ranger/Everest in the 2.2.and 3.2 turbo diesel engines and they had issues early on in PX versions from 2011 to 2013 however since 2014 the 6-speed ZF in Ranger/Everest has been bullet proof. Ford also have a GM designed 8-speed torque converter (which is also actually a GM 9-speed auto for GM vehicles and some STLANTIS Models) that they use in Escape / Focus and other vehicles which we don't get in Australia that also in Focus ST has 2nd gear lockout (software wise) to make it a 7-speed auto. Ford also have CVT in there PHEV vehicles that are very similar to Toyota levels of reliability and finally Ford appears to have learned there lesson with DCT transmissions as all of them now are "wet" design systems example: Puma. about the only shame is that Ford dont offer a manual in Ranger ... that said Amarok will have a manual version and some say say the 2.3L turbo petrol 4 will have a manual version as a road based sports version.

Two points, the 10R80 transmission had two main issues in the PX3 Ranger. The standard vehicles (not the Raptor) had a really shit tune in it, which insisted on skipping gears which it was really rough with. The second and main fault was that the oil pump drive gears were disintegrating, the harshness of the diesel engine power pulses were chewing the gears out. They changed the gears in late 2019 production onwards for a tougher item that doesn't lose its teeth. The yanks love a good lawsuit, so it's no surprise that people that aren't happy with something launch a lawsuit. The "gen 2" ten speeds are significantly smoother than the first version. It was all in the tune.

I love your honesty, John. I do wonder why a vehicle such as a Ranger needs a 10 speed transmission. For a vehicle to need such a thing, it would have an engine with a desperately narrow power band. A case in point would be the small, multi-cylinder powerplants of Japanese racing motorcycles back in the 1960s, or a truck for heavy loads, fitted with a boosted Diesel engine. In my opinion, a big part of this fashion is manufacturers claiming bragging rights by playing a numbers game. 'If your 7/8 speed gearbox is good, then my 10 speed one must be better', is the kind of thing a maker might hope the public might believe. With that many gears to choose from, it's almost inevitable that a gearbox is going to hunt between ratios. My car history features plenty of conventional torque converter automatic gearboxes, and manuals of up to 6 speeds. I would never buy an automated manual transmission, and neither would I wish to own a DCT vehicle. You can call me a dinosaur, but these systems have not been around long enough for the bugs to be ironed out.

That trans is used on multiple platforms and engines. Turbo mustang and Camaro,the Ford F150 and GM' Silverado/Sierra and their Canyon/Colorado. With turbo petrol, turbo diesel and V8s. Plus a slew of others. It's an "all purpose" trans and the gearing is supposed to be the same idea as using a CVT. Perfect gear to say in the engines sweet spot. But yea 10 gears are excessive depending upon usage.
