This video is about the issues that I have had with my Ford Ranger 10 Speed automatic gearbox and how I was able to fix it. I have been digging for weeks to get info and tried to explain what happens and what I have done to fix it as the Ford Dealers do ignore many of the issues. I also explain to some extend on how that gearbox works. These methods worked for mine 2021 Biturbo Wildtrak. Meanwhile old rusty video's are in editing...

Bought a new Ranger StormTrak May 2023. Gearbox trauma from day 1. Took it back to dealer. Told them to reflash the TCM and ECU and then access to Adaptive Learning and put it into "Halt Adaptive Learning". They REALLY didn't want to do it until I told them I would park it outside the dealership with a BIG sign -THIS CAR IS A LEMON DO NOT BUY FORD!!! So they did what I asked and GUESS WHAT.... no gearbox problems. Drives smooth and feels great. The lesson is KNOW YOUR RIGHTS....do your research. BTW I actually like the Ranger its Ford's terrible terrible service thats the problem. They sell us lemons and we drink the lemonade. I don't know if this will work for you but its a good start.

Cold start is normal issue to all vehicle not just Ranger. Any car will experience cold start and that is not on the 10 speed transmission issue. Cold start most like the starter problem or battery nothing on transmission. We have 2007 model transmissiom we fix the starter and now no more cold start. The problem to all driver who drive on Automatic is the way they drive. When you drive in City push the accelerator slowly and it will change gear to low to higher gear Do not push and pull the accelerator. There are many gear inside the transmission. Now when u drive in highway push deep the accelerator and u can see the odometer go high speed and if reach to 80 to 100 kph release the accelerator and let the carl run. If the odometer is slowly down to 60 then its time to push the accelerator and if reach to 120 to 160 release again. That is the way your automatic car will last to 30 yrs without any problem. Another friendly advise to all automatic car owner when you park hit hard the brake and put to neutral and then park. If you hit the brake and put to park the vehicle will move backward and if you do that all the time your reverse transmission will damage the gear and it will not reverse. This is what I observed to all Automatic. Summary: All Automatic car. Do not push and pull the accerator. Push slowly to reach to 60kph if u drive in City. City speed max to 0 to 40 correct me if I am wrong. In freeway push deep accelerator if reach to 80 to 120 relase the accelerator let the car run. If u see the odometer slowly down speed and push again the accelerstor to reach to high speed 160kph and release again. Friendly advise to last forever without any problem. I say again do not push and pull the accelerator if u drive automatic car.😁😁😁😁😁 if manual no problem

Thanks for the video! I'm going to try this this weekend and get back to you. I have an appointment with Ford next week to drop off my 2020 Ranger for all these exact issues. They said they need the truck for 2 or 3 weeks to rebuild the transmission. Mine has gone from bad shifts to worse, it can't find a gear sometimes when I'm on the highway it almost feels like a stall. Thanks again.

I traded the truck in for a 2023 Ranger while at the dealer to get it fixed. The new 2023 truck had the rear end replace at 5k miles it blew the 1st month on the freeway, an oil leak from day 1, electrical/tech issues, trans shifting problems started at 7k mile it was in the shop for 30+ days. And a bad steering gear. Thankfully Ford bought it back. I turned it in 3 weeks ago. There is a class action lawsuit for the 10R80 trans. I would never buy a vehicle that has that trans. It's made by Ford and GM so GM trucks, some sedans and Cadillacs use them. They are junk. @@nguyenvinhha75

Our 2020 Ford Ranger was shifting roughly, especially 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Took it to Ford dealer. They have Technical Service Bulletins referencing this issue for most of the Ford trucks/SUV 2017-2023. The latest is TSB 22-2428. In our case they performed the recommended actions, including resetting the Transmission Adaptive Learning. Just normal driving for a couple of days afterward seemed to complete the fix.

Ive put about 2,400 miles on my 23' Ford Ranger Tremor and I have started to notice some of these issues as well. Some hard shifts especially in the cold, some harsh clutch engagements and disengagements after letting on/off the accelerator pedal etc. I thought maybe it was the trans fluid not flowing throughout the transmission fully but I'll still notice it after driving for 20 minutes or more with temps at operating levels. Going over hills or irregular terrain while it trying to hunt for the right gear felt very lurchy and uncomfortable. And after your spiel on it not being in a learning state for the first 1,000 miles or so of its life is a bit concerning for the future longevity of my particular unit. Almost makes me feel as though im not driving it correctly in a way or being too careless but its just the way it drives.

There is a technical service bulletin for these transmissions and basically it says to update the TCM. If that doesn’t work then replace the valve body. If that doesn’t work replace the transmission. It should be under warranty. Most dealers will do a lot to not do something under warranty. It unfortunately does not pay well. This is not the dealers fault it’s the manufacturer. They set the warranty times. Truth is most car companies can no longer make a product that can be mass produced, reliable, cheap, efficient, and simple to fix. If your car is under warranty you have to get mean to get what you want unfortunately. Go on a test drive with a technician if you have to. Thanks for the video. My 22 ranger has shifting issues but it’s fine 90% of the time.

I think a lot of the videos I've seen on KZbin about Ford's Ranger and 10-speed gearbox problems are extremely unfair. This is the first video that approaches it from a technical angle and with an intelligent break down of what's going on. I've put nearly 10,000 miles on my 2023 and I haven't experienced any issues (yet) with this transmission. However, I also routinely take these steps also, so perhaps my method is not as harsh as some folks who like to turn the key and launch hard on a cold engine. We'll see in time, but everything you explained makes sense.

Informative piece you have put together make sense. I have an issue with transmission being in to high a gear, say 7th or even 8th traveling 50 km an hour. It's too high and has that jerking feel. Any suggestions? Service Ford just says they are all like that, not comforting to think this is what Ford wants??? Wouldn't of bought the truck if this is the way they want???

I have a 2021 US version of the Ford Ranger and so far have 36K on it. I haven't had any issues with the 10 speed transmission at all. Under normal circumstances it will always skip 2nd gear and will handle any gear down to 1100 RPM. In fact it acts more like a diesel than a gas engine. It simply has that much power coming from the 2.3 turbo engine. It does not hunt and will seamlessly shift without drama. I do not abuse the truck but don't baby it either. I think part of my success is using 93 octane gasoline as the engine produces more power, more easily with the extra octane. If you press the down shift lever on the stick in drive mode it will show you what gear you are in. In fact you can also use this feature to limit what gear will be the highest available. Say you are in the mountains and want to avoid 9th and 10th gear you can simply press the downshift lever until 7 is the highest number on the dash display. Pressing the upshift will reverse the process. Of course you can also use sport mode but it is less flexible in some scenarios. Overall the 2.3, 10 speed has proven not to be the problem some people report. I have never been to the dealer for warranty work so I got a good one. If you test drive a new one at the dealer the engine and transmission will act very differently compared to when the engine and transmission are broken in - this leads to many false impressions of the vehicle. Thanks for sharing.

Hi D3Sshotter, thanks for clearly explaination. I have a doubt: in my 10r80 i have seen a little red drops (i suppose oil gearbox) hanging from cooler tubes. Could it be related with any kind of usage? or it is a kind of leak not related with how i use/shif the gears?? After your explanation i supposed it is not related with bad learning proccess, isnt? Thanks in advance.

If the 10R80 is anything like the 6R80, (thats a ford copy of the ZF 6speed) and I bet it shares software with tweaks. I replaced my valve body on my 6R80 with a genuine Ford complete unit to rectify harsh shifts. The new valve body came from ford with a software code on a tag in the pladtic floating in the fluid to replace the factory one on the transmission, along with a 4 page instruction on how to update the software to a new shift strategy number to suit the calibration of the new solenoids (I used Forscan) and how to perform the shift calibration procedure. The vehicle had to be driven several times at light throttle until it reached 4th gear at 50kmh then come to a gentle stop, then hold the break down for 10 seconds. This had to be performed about 10 times in a row on a flat road. I cannot remember the exact details but I still have the paperwork somewhere. This is instructions from the manufacturer so anything else you get told on the internet is BS. This information is not really in the puplic domain as it is intended for Ford technicians performing repairs, the same as TSB documents are, so the techs can perform repairs in ford dealerships. The only self learning box i know of is the ZF 6speed boxes, that have a mechatronic mounted TCM that sits in the fluid similar to the early 6R80 units. The self learning part on a Ford vehicle is the KAM (keep alive memory) and is stored by the TCM and recognises driver behaviour in regards to throttle application scenarios. Im not sure its still in use as this was a 1990s and 2000s technology. Im sure something similar is in play now with more sophistication, but it is not a function of the TCM is Ford manufactured transmissions.

Indeed, it is a perception that we all have on driving gearboxes with less gears , as those rev through the RPM's .. If you have a 10 speed gearbox that rev'ing is more within a limited range and when driven modest it almost sounds like the engine runs at a steady RPM... and that is a strange feeling but normal

That is a pretty large defect in the engineering. To find a flat surface with no traffic and no speed limit so that the TCM can learn from the ECU would be impossible even if you wanted to pay the traffic fines and lose your license where I and many other people live. For it to shift to those top gears it is going to have to be exceeding the speed limit by a large margin. Here on a confined island with two lane roads and maximum speed of 55 on twisting and turning roads (not to mention winter time ice and snow, rain all year) +heavy traffic, this just isn't feasible. Not only that we have no dealership (although that does not seem to have helped you and in past experience I have found the same) available with "trained" mechanics on complicated systems. In the modern world fewer and fewer people want to become an auto mechanic and deal with the cramped impossible access issues, low pay in comparison to heavy duty mechanics, etc. so it becomes harder and harder to get service for complex issues in modern cars. Complicated solutions with many problems new off the showroom floor at very expensive prices on cars that only last a few years before they rust out and are scrap represent failed answers. If engineers and executives had to actually drive the crap they put out at a percentage of their income the regular guy has to pay to fix this junk I believe we would see rapid change. Bottom line is that cars today with all the complicated systems are way more expensive to operate, get the same fuel mileage that the 1960 era cars achieved, and last less time on the road. Add to that that when failures do occur they are almost always major expenses. It pays to remember the "KISS" maxim (Keep it simple, stupid). Complicated systems whether on Boeing jets or automobiles have a higher chance of failure especially when made of cheap plastics that self-destruct.

That TCM learning procedure that you have here, seems very complicated and if that is how you make a ten speed automatic shift very smoothly, then no, thank you. I like four speed, five speed, and six speed automatics and the only purpose of why I would want more gears is to cover more range of how powerful or how fuel efficient the car can get. Four speed automatics have been around for a long time and if it is not broke, do not try to fix it. Also, if you do not drive on the highway and you only drive on city streets, three speeds would be plenty for you.

Tried it. Doesn't work unfortunately. Certainly not where I live in the UK anyway. You need a good couple of miles of uninterrupted flat road to get to 8th at 15% throttle and then on to 10th gear. And you're then at motorway speeds. Then you need to repeat several times. If you can do that without interest from the local constabulary, please tell me how... 😪

high rev shifting can be also DPF regeneration, at least in mercedes it shifts at higher revs when that happens. Also any EGR sticking or problem effects the shifting alot. harsh downshifting and such. As for fords. Those dual clutch S-Max transmissions are a nightmare, they just fail totally really easily. Never buy those. Stick with real automatics, with turbine and clutches. Basicly every CVT is a nightmare, Also most DCT are bad. Most normal turbine transmissions are pretty good as they are most tested and used design so far. as for manual or automatic, someone said that German engineer knows more about shifting than you. So automatic is pretty good.

It seems to me that Ford should give the original warranty if a warranty item was replaced due to failure. Why would I not think I will only get 33k miles out of the replacement transmission. Here's the tragedy. Ford should have the gear box calibrated before the sale. The customer should not have to find a long road to spend 30 minutes speeding back and forth on. P.s. I've tried this, and even though it does improve the shifting, it's doesn't fix it completely. The erratic, harsh shifting is still there. It comes and goes. The truck is an absolute mess.

A modern Toyota will easily do 600,000+km without problems caused by/related to the automatic transmission if the oil is changed every 200,000 km.
