I previously owned a 2019 Accord Hybrid (base). Over 9,150 miles I averaged 50.3mpg and once managed to do 675 miles on a single tank (56.8mpg). You REALLY need to understand the mechanics of this car and HOW to drive it to get the most out of it. Using the regen paddles instead of brakes for all stopping activities makes a huge difference.

I also noticed that wheel size has major affect on mpg. I was shopping around for a small car a few months ago, what I noticed on the Corolla hybrid for example, is the LE had 16” wheels and got 53 hwy while the SE hybrid with 17” wheels got 50 hwy, both according to EPA. The same with other brands and models. You want to squeeze out the most mpg, gonna have to spring for the base models or swap out wheels and tires. Edit: the video mentions wheel size at the end lol.

My 14 accord coupe v6 gets about 32-35mpg on long highway driving. Granted daily driving in the neighborhood im getting about 22-25mpg. Thanks for the vid, sorta puts the hybrid tech into perspective on highway driving

DM, It seems to me that a variety of Toyota Hybrid sedans achieved far better mpg results. While comparable with Honda around town, the Toyota Hybrid system has regularly proven itself to be more efficient at highway speeds.

Toyota hybrids have larger hybrid batteries giving more boost and drivability at low speeds. Honda hybrid batteries are smaller and gives less boost at lower speeds thus making you use the motor more.

Toyota hybrids are the best when it comes to hybrids. They did practically invent hybrids or popularized them. Its the typical Toyota vs Honda tradeoff debate playing out again with these new hybrids. With Toyota Hybrids you're definitely gonna get better MPG but with Honda hybrids, youre gonna get a quieter better handling ride with better quality interior and a more spacious ride. Its really a matter if which you prefer. As for me Hondas are the way to go. They're all around nicer except that Toyotas have them slightly beat with MPG and reliability.

I consistently will get 35+ mpg on highway 70mph flats on the '14 V6. Often up to 37-38mpg. Best part too is punch the throttle down and do low 14 quarter mile times to confirm it's no slouch.

I have a 22 Si and drive 90 miles road trip for work, all toll roads interstate obviously. I do between 65-90 mph depending on cops and trucks. I’m at 25k and my mpg is 36.3. I love the design of the new accord hybrid and for some reason as I’ve entered the 2nd half of my 30s I care about fuel economy so this video was an eye opener. But then I read the comments and yes I feel with regen braking and not utilizing cruise control I can’t get closer to what Honda advertises. Also I wanted the Touring but yes the EX-L gives a 10% increase in fuel economy so looking at that as well. Thanks all

I have the 2023 Accord Hybrid Touring. I consistently get 45mpg. It's a mix of city and highway. I have not taken a long trip yet to see what it gets mostly on highway. Overall I'm very satisfied as my previous car was a Lexus and only got 26mpg on the highway.

I have about 3k miles on my 23 hybrid touring, and so far I’m averaging 41 mpg (without trying to get good mpg). Best I’ve gotten in a short 1 hour freeway trip was 53 mpg, but that was actually trying to get good mileage. If you want good mpg use Econ mode and use the paddle shifters to regen brake and recharge your battery faster. Also use EV only mode when driving in parking lots, drive-thrus, and idling for long periods of time.

I've had several Honda hybrids (one Civic, four Accords) and I can say that a trained hybrid driver can get much better than 36 mpg in a modern Honda hybrid. Coasting is an essential skill to leverage momentum without accelerator and hard braking. I'm sure I could have topped 40 mpg with that Touring by using cruise control less and more dynamic accelerating/coasting when appropriate. I currently have a 2023 EX-L that is getting 45-48 in mixed driving in the city/highway. Looking forward to a road trip when i can truly test long drive mpg results.

I've noticed the engine is on much more in my Camry hybrid when using cruise control than when I'm driving. But, a big reason I bought it was to reduce my stress of driving in traffic, so I'll pay the mpg penalty. I use adaptive cruise as much as possible.

On the 2023 Honda Accord Touring Hybrid, Car and Driver stated that couldn't complete their 75 mph highway road test (in a manner where they could publish strong highway fuel economy) for this vehicle. C&D stated they got 43 mpg in mixed driving. With respect to highway mpg, note C&D achieved 31 mpg in the 2023 Honda CRV Sport Hybrid at 75 mph with a similar engine and powertrain (EPA fuel economy rating 40 mpg city/34 highway). The 2023 Accord Touring would likely get around 36-37 mpg in a C&D highway road test (EPA fuel economy rating 46 mpg city/41 highway), which is far short of the 44 mpg they achieved with the Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE (EPA fuel economy rating 44 mpg city/47 highway).

One change I would like to see is the touring model with 17" rims not the 19" and see if that would help with MPG. A coworker of mine has the EX-L (on 17") and he claims 56 MPG. I do not know their driving habits or the route they take to work in the DC Baltimore area.

THANKS for the Great MPG review. My 2023 Toyota Sienna LE gets 36-38 mpg, 75-80mph on a highway, 150mile drive, with two passengers. With 6 passengers, I get 34mpg. I have done it several times, even with 500 to 1000mile drive, I get the same result. I also have a Honda Accord Hybrid. Toyota's Hybrid technology is much different from Honda's. The problem with Honda's hybrid, you CAN'T really "cruise" on a highway. You have to keep your foot on the gas pedal all the time, otherwise, it will slow down. With Toyota's Hybrid, you can let go the the gas pedal and just let it cruise.

Yeah toyota hybrid are generally more efficient because it always blending electric and ICE with the planetary gear set so even if you dog on it the variance isn't big. Hondas hybrid system is simple and efficient so long as the demands only use the electric motor. The variance is higher if you really push it because each of the parallel hybrid mode operate with a fixed clutch to drive the wheels ( low and high for 2023) with the electric motor. What's doublely unfortunate is when climbing high grades the engine will uncouple the clutches and shoot the rpm using the engine as a generator because the electric motor is offer more torque which is better for climbing

I own the '23 Touring model. In 1900 miles of about 60% city/40% highway, I am averaging 45 mpg. I am in SE WI and took delivery March 1. With the warmer weather and the engine having broken in, am getting 47 in the last 1200 miles. I'm OK with that. At freeway speeds ~ 75mph, I notice that wind speed and direction really take a toll. Thought about finding some nice 17" wheels and tires to improve fuel economy. However, Honda puts in some baffles around the wheels, inside the tires to improve noise on the road. I won't sacrifice a few mpg's in exchange for increased road noise. Yes, Camry Hybrid most certainly would be more fuel efficient, especially on the highway. But the interior space, braking and handling is definitely a step up over the outdated Camry.

It's aerodynamics, any speed over 50mph, aerodynamic drag begins to play a major part in fuel consumption. I drive a 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid (same drivetrain as current generation) and if I drive 60-65 mph I get mid/low 40s on the highway. Any speeds over 65 and I begin to see a decrease in mpg. Around town and slower speeds, below 45, I can get in the 50''s with a light foot. All told if I drive "normal" I am usually in the high 30' s mpg and the wife is in the low 40's for mpgs.

That's a pretty disappointing number all things considered. Real world highway driving, I have gotten as much as 4 MPG (for a total of 57 MPG) over the EPA in my Camry hybrid. And that is for an entire tank. 690 miles. Segments of highway, I will see 50-70 MPG. During the winter, freeway MPG drops down to mid 40s. But during the summer, it is incredible. On my 6 mile drive to work, I will often see 99 MPG for the trip. It just depends on outside weather for the Camry.

That was disappointing. I just finished a 1,800 mile road trip in my 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid FWD from NYC to Tennessee. We got around 33 mpg average for the whole trip by calculating miles/gallons. It was with 7 passengers and around 250 pounds of luggage so roughly 1,200-1,300 pounds total payload. The average speed for the whole trip was 59 mph and cruise control was set at 80 mph for most of the highway driving. I would say around 90% of the drive was highway driving as well. It is surprising that a mostly empty Honda Accord going 70mph only got 4 mpg higher than in my case. Of course it was only 90 miles but even then.

Like you said, skip the Touring and Sport hybrid models, get the EX-L if you care about fuel mileage, because the difference is significant. 51city/44hwy compared to 46city/41hwy. Note that the Sport models also get the lower EPA rating, so I would guess it has more to do with the wheels than anything else. edit: that touring model is Q U I E T on the freeway, though.

hybrid isn't really designed for highway driving right? It's more of a city thing. In gas cars they are pretty darn efficient once moving, but getting going and just idling is a bit of a waste. Hybrids are just supposed to help with that. My Q50 can do 30mpg on a 70mph roadtrip, but my 40 mile commute has me averaging 22.5mpg despite going from Philly to Wilmington (thus mostly highway miles).

Been driving the 2023 Touring for about a month now with over 1500 miles on the highway. Two thing I have noticed with gas milage. 1. At least for highway driving, I get the actual rated mileage in normal mode and around 5 mpg less in econ. I am not sure why this is. I am always very gentle with the gas and always maintain the same speed. I ran the first 500 highway miles in econ when I notice the mileage was not as expected. It's been much better since moving to normal. May be a bug? 2. 65 mph seems to be around the sweet spot for best mileage/speed ratio. Going up to 75 mph drops the mileage down a few points. From what I understand, it makes sense efficiency wise to start clutching in the ICE at around 62 mph. So keeping the speed as close to this (and the RPMs low as there is no transmission) is going to give the best milage.

I am at just over 500 miles total with mine, as of today. I have noticed that I am finally getting the claimed combined rating of 44 mpg with my second top off of the fuel tank. I have traveled 120 miles on this tank and am at an average of 45 mpg so far with mixed driving, mostly on Econ. The temperature here has warmed up too which might be helping by causing the EFI to run a touch more lean. Either way I am as pleased as can be!!

So vs the old 2.0T it’s worse on the highway. 36 vs 38 mpg but the gas tank is 2 gal smaller (12.8 vs 14.8). New hybrid does 480 miles estimated while the old 2.0T does 520 miles.

@@Eugen-E On DM’s test it averaged 35.7 mpg. I average 35-37 mpg highway in my Sport 2.0T and have seen as high as 42.8 mpg on the computer (over 120 mile trip). What I said is that the smaller tank on the Hybrid reduces the total highway range. Plus, the Hybrid will destroy any non-hybrid in city driving. My 2.0T struggles to get over 23 mpg in the city. Because of this my average mpg is about 29 vs the 44 mpg they’ve gotten with this hybrid.

Love the new Accord, but that range is disappointing. My 2011 Altima has over 520 miles of range averaging 25 MPG. For a 2023 hybrid vehicle, I’m expecting at least 600-700 miles.

In the summer, running the air conditioning will give you a lower mpg number I would imagine. I wonder how this popular sedan stacks up against a Subaru Legacy, which has a highway mpg rating of 35 mpg with AWD and can be had for about $5000 less.

Legacy is already old. Is smaller, is slower, in stop&go traffic has a lot worse mpg. Hybrids do better in summer because they have electric AC compressors. While in winter they have to keep the engine running to heat the cabin.

Thought about doing that. But then learned that Honda uses some noise baffles around the wheels, inside the tires. I saw another youtube video on it, and it seems to work. If you don't want increased tire noise, stay with the Honda factory set up with the baffles. I believe the factory tires and wheels on the lower trim (non-hybrid) models will work just fine with no calibration issues with the speedometer / odometer.

@@stevehoppenjan Using the 17-inch wheels instead of the 19-inch wheels not only increases mpg but also decreases road noise and improves ride comfort. It all about having a thicker tire with more air for cushion between the road and the suspension. The noise baffles might be a must for the 19-inch wheels because I find them harsh. I have the EX-L hybrid with the 17s, and also got OEM 19s used on the Touring and I swapped them, because the 19s looked better. Well, I have to commute now sometimes 200 miles a day a few times a week and after dealing with choppy roads and about 40mpg hwy, I switched back to the 17s and they are just way more comfortable. I averaged 44-46mpg on like 99% highway travel doing 60 to 75+mph.

Reviewers don’t tell you that extreme cold affects hybrid batteries, extreme heat affects hybrid batteries, you must drive the car 600 miles per month so batteries aren’t adversely affected. Must park in shade during summer hybrids are a pain. I’ll take a Camry v6

To be honest, I don't think hybrids are where we want them to just yet. I have a 2018 Toyota camry xse 4 cylinder. From L.A. to Lake Tahoe we averaged 37.7 mpg. That's 4 grown men and luggage with ac on. Now on local roads yes I get around 26 mpg. But we should get more especially if we're paying that hybrid premium price.

73mph on the highway is way too fast if you wanna save gas. If you drive conservatively in city streets and if you drive around 64mph on the slower right lanes on the highways you can easily surpass the EPA estimated mpg rating. Easily. But then again, driving around 63-65mph can be hard to do on the highways especially if the highway is wide open with little traffic. Its up to the individual driver really. As for me, I'm hardly ever in a rush and drive conservatively on the right lanes on the highway. At the same time I'm conscious of other drivers being careful not to annoy people so I occasionally step on it to keep up with traffic. With that all said, I'm getting 3+ mpg over the combined EPA estimated mpg rating with the current trip A meter for the past 1600miles.

good test, let down on the mpg results tho. i own a 21 honda insight so civic hybrid version an drove a total of 506.9miles via trip A setting, divide that by 10.3 gal capacity = 49.21mpg, lower than the advertised 52mpg. 40 miles ag day with 85% hwy and 15% side streets but still pretty damn good.

Thats not bad, its a heavy and big car. My 06' auto civic gets about 45-51mpg at 70mph GPS, depends on how many people im hauling and also the AC. And my 2014' forester XT gets about 31mpg. Makes sense you got that result. Still think that the non hybrid would do better.

@@514aam I've been very happy with it so far. I think the 1.5 is best suited with a CVT, never feels underpowered. With the 6MT in the Civic Si, it has too much rev hang and not enough character.

While Honda Focused on Fuel Efficiency in the new accord. They missed that mark and will lose many previous accord owner. They still think the accord is basic domestic car with providing anything that would set it totally apart from Mazda and Toyota. The could have beefed up the Previous 2.0 Turbo to some more of a sport model to compete with the Toyota Camry SE/XSE V6, Added A panoramic roof and brought some luxury like features inside.

Not horrible in mixed driving, however kind of disappointing not to meet or exceed epa in this real mpg hwy test. Can't wait to see what the lighter Civic hybrid is capable of when paired with this same powertrain. That's going to be the ultimate daily driver imo. A car, with the possible exception of not having awd, will be highly competitive and versatile in everything. Just hope that Honda holds the cost in check. If they do, they won't be able to keep them in stock.

Yes, you can lock it into EV mode which will give you up to a few miles of EV driving in the right conditions. If you press the accelerator too much or go too fast it'll leave EV mode.

Yea 37 mpg is pretty bad for a hybrid. I rented a 2023 Altima and took a 500 mile trip and averaged 43 mpg. I only used 3/4 of the tank and had 1/4 of a tank to spare after the 500 miles. I was kind of expecting the hybrid to do better

Thank you for an excellent review. 37 MPG on freeway is, tbh, rather pathetic. It's even worse than a modern day non hybrid car of the same class. Great as the rest of aspects this car may be, I'd simply rule it out if I am looking for a hybrid family sedan.

The problems I find with the 2023 Honda Accord: 1. No All Wheel Drive is available 2. No heated steering Wheel is available 3. No spare tire is available 4. No XM Radio. If a 2023 or 2024 car missing all of these features is fine for you, then get one. Hopefully, by the time 2025 comes around these glaring deficiencies will be resolved. Latest News as of January 2024: For $500 Honda will sell you a Spare Tire Package.
