What’s the fuel efficiency while towing?

Whenever you have a small forced induction engine in a big car and towing, it’s going to be relying on the turbo heavily which means it will drink gas. My 5.7 hemi used to get 3 or 4 miles per gallon better than mileage than my buddy’s eco-boost when towing the same 4500lb boat. There is no replacement for displacement towing.

The 6.4v8 just found out is an option. Great Truck my wife and I just bought one not even 3 week's ago.

Have the same problem with Grand Cherokee L , it’s litttle brother. I think the tow computer is very finicky with even the slightest short. Had to completely rewire the trailer to get it to work, sometimes. It’s the vehicle not the trailer… So I agree 100% with you.

Interesting... we've driven a Grand Cherokee L but not towed with one yet. That'd imply some architecture issue common among the two models or a related software bug. Does your trailer have LED or incandescent lights?
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP Жыл бұрын
Sounds like it’s just a software or tuning update away from being a hugely impressive vehicle. What are your thoughts after driving this HO version for the standard 420hp / 460tq hurricane engine? Think it’ll also move similar trailers well enough?

Yeah.. that payload is pretty low given it's built for 6 passengers and a bunch of cargo. It's like if you had 6 decent sized guys you would be above payload capacity.

Do I need the trailer braking connection? It is a p2/3? Is it easy to connect to grand wagoner

My wife has a 2010 Mercedes GL 450 that also had trailer light issues. To resolve the trailer light issue for towing our boat, which has a trailer with plain ol incandescent bulbs, we either have to: A) use a specific trailer plug adapter, 7 pin to 4 flat which converts the signal, or B) have our SAM (signal acquisition module) re-flashed, because apparently it's set to LED lights. We use the $20ish plug adapter which has worked fine since we started using it. My understanding is, at least Mercedes, but I believe I remember reading other manufacturers vehicles have a setting similar to this where the amount of current sent through the trailer wiring harness is less for LEDs and it also uses something like a closed loop with LEDs (tells us if we have a bulb out & which one it is on the trailer). I know I did a horrible job trying to explain the issue, but it sounds to me like a similar issue with the Wagoneers. We would have some flashing lights like turn signals (or hazards, but not both) and also parking lights (if I remember correctly), but no brake lights, or vise-versa.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
That's frustrating! And that could make sense. I had everything except running lights. Issue is that I can't convert 7 to 4 pin because I need brake control, not just lights. Strange issue that I haven't faced with any other tow vehicle (except the two Grand Wagoneers I've tested) - even the "DT" 2023 Ram 1500 I just towed with over New Years. So odd.

Great video. Appreciate the focus on the towing capability and objective review. Did you try turning the lights to ON (not Automatic)? I have to turn the lights to ON on my 2014 JGC in order to get the trailer’s running lights to turn on. Might be worth a try.

I just saw in the comments for the ‘22 Grand Wagoneer that it was due to a trailer wiring fault.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Hey Joe! So we thought it was a trailer wiring fault and it wasn't entirely. The connector was repaired but the problem persisted despite the trailer working flawlessly with 20+ other tow vehicles, including a 2023 Ram 1500 (DT) that we reviewed over New Year's Eve. And this was all with the headlight control manually turned to On, as is safe procedure every time you tow anywhere :-)

On the trailer running lights, I've found the factory trailer brake controller to be accurate. Had a similar concern on my DT Ram and when I crawled under the trailer to examine I discovered a harness rub. Repaired the trailer wire and all good now. My old tekonsha controller gave me no indication. Check resistance to ground on your running lamp circuit, possible the Jeeps trailer brake controller has better diagnostics than your normal tow rig.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the input! But we've had zero issues with this trailer and both factory TBCs and Tekonsha RF TBC using... 20+ tow vehicles in the last three years, including a brand new 2023 Ram 1500 around New Year's Eve. It's something with the electrical architecture and related software on the Wagoneer in particular.

@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Yes, there is an exception that we also discovered - it is available on Series II and Series III Obsidian models BUT only if you get the short wheelbase. Not available at all on the Grand Wagoneer L. The 6.4 is a fine engine but doesn't fit the character of the truck (to me) - the Hurricane I6 is far better in this application.

Really needed to be a 3.5 litre I6, which would have solved many of the issues with the smaller over boosted engine. They should have just bought the Barra 4.0 l6 from Ford Australia, would have solved all their problems, and everyone needs 1000hp Grand wagoner L, ha ha

Extra space, extra power, extra price. So big Could have added a forth row. There are 3 series choices for both regular and grand Wagoneers. The very Best Buy is the 2022 Wagoneer with series three package and the former 5.7 392 hp engine. Highest towing capacity, less fuel to burn, passengers heft.

Yeah, it's kind of a "tow things OR bring your family" situation, not both. Hard to find big SUVs that do indeed have payload to tow at or near their capacity and let you bring a lot of people along.

If that's the engine they plan to put on a Ram 1500, it will be a complete failure. Unless they find a way to get more torque at lower RPM. Maybe add etorque to it? Try to get the max torque and low rpm.
@R_00N
@R_00N Жыл бұрын
The 5.7 Hemi makes its power at high RPMs too. The Ford 3.5 ecoboost is probably the best option for 1/2 ton towing. 90% of it's 500ftlb torque at 1750rpm and you get much higher payloads than Ram.

Correct, the trailer that has worked just fine on 25+ other brand-new tow vehicles is a "POS" and this is not the Grand Wagoneer's fault at all. Brilliant logic!

I wish Jeep/ Ram bring back their diesel option! GM is the only one who has diesel full size SUV in the market. I own a new 1500 diesel Denali, nice drivetrain, but the interior in GM even the Denali ultimate is 🤮 A 100k SUV should come standard w/ more features. Ram/ Jeep knows how to make luxury vehicles👍👍👍
