hello, I recently completed the raf interview and I am a 17 yo from tamworth, england. This will be the first ever job I do and I would like to let you know, as long as you prepare correctly and expect the complete worst then as long as you read the information on the website anyone can pass. It’s very much common sense and passion. Treat the interview like it’s going to make you fail, expect the worse, and do you best, perform your best, give yourself rest, and smash that interview. You’ll smash it as long as you have given it your all. Ignore your family, and stay confident regardless of their thoughts. and honest.

For my interview, I used the STAR interview structure (Situation, action, task, result). As a basic question and answer let me explain: Question - Please show/tell me an example where you have used your teamwork skills in order to complete a task or dedicate a specific personality towards the situation at hand. S situation - ex. The problem which occurred within the group was someone not giving enough thought to the safety behind cooking when on the course. T task - (what did I have to accomplish to resolve the problem) I was challenged to talk to the individual and explain where they went wrong and how they can resolve the problem, whilst using communication skills, I was able to come to a conclusion to solve the problem. A Action - (Explain what you did word by word and be as clear as possible with the recruiter what it is YOU did to help). R Result - What did you manage to achieve and what did it help within your group. How did it help continue the problem and how are you going to move on without having the same issues. If the interview is online (which it was in my case) notes are not permitted, I would advise you to revise and revise and look online for the structure of the questions, every military interview uses a clear structure and they like to see that you have a lot of knowledge regarding the application process, this is first impressions, especially good for the interview stage. Use your initiative - they like to know your looks on things and like to see you ask questions during the interview in order for you to looks inquisitive and show interest. The best thing you can do in an interview is be as smart and as honest as possible, it’s no good lying to the recruiter. It’ll only impress them more if you have the courage to talk a bit about your background and most importantly what pushed you into joining the raf. I beg rat you go elsewhere on the internet and gather ever little bit of information possible (when the name of the head of the raf and his age and his background, how the raf came about, who decided to create the raf). Be equipped on the littlest questions you know, they will be impressed to see a huge knowledge about the history of the air force. I hope this has helped you out and I wish you the best of luck with your interview, I was very much thrown into the deep end for this job at 16yo when I first applied I was absolutely terrified for what was to come. Once you have a better understanding, I promise it puts your mind as ease and prepares your body for your phase one which I start at the end of January, I cannot and must not tell you the date. My father was a sergeant, regimental gunner in the raf and I am following in his steps! All the best!🎉

Hi again Jake, Thanks for the very informative video. I have my Interview booked in a week. From watching your video, it's very extensive and it seems like they would be asking quite a lot. Would you recommend re-booking the interview 14 days from day I recieved the invitation? or do you think this revision is feasible within a week?
@JakeGchannel7 ай бұрын
Thanks! Glad you find it helpful 🙂 good question and to be honest there’s no simple answer as it’s all individual. For me personally a week was way enough just due to the amount of revision I was doing and how well my answers were getting structured and remembered. If you’re finding yourself getting the answers down confidently then a week should be fine. However, keep in mind that your worst enemy is yourself (meaning your mind) I couldn’t tell you the amount of times that I was close to pushing things back or not doing them at all because I was imagining/guessing what it could be like and I always (for me anyway) over estimated how hard it will be or the repercussions for the outcome I didn’t want. Lastly, I learned that setting things in motion that are time sensitive (like giving yourself a week) makes me work more effective and hard even though I don’t like it. This happens especially in basic training as every week there’s a new exam/practical test so it’s good training to do it now. Obviously this is just me, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you and you may need that extra time but don’t slip into the habit of having that extra time because you’re nervous/worried as you don’t have luxury in Halton (unless you’re going cranwell then I have no idea what that’s like) hope this helps.

Hello, great video, got my interview in a week. Just wondering what the 7 phases of basic training are because I can’t seem to find it on the RAF website. Thanks.
@evolvepredz3509 Жыл бұрын
Hi mate ive been in the RAF for over 4 years now the basic training comprises 3 main phases 1st phase being an introduction to the air force ie kit, kit, drill and fitness, taught loads about the RAF you then transition into the regiment phase which is 4 smaller phases from first aid, Radiological, biological, chemical and nuclear skills and defences and learning how to operate the rifle you'll then do blue warrior to test all of them skills out in the field (be prepared to get muddy wet and cold.) the final phase is spent doing lots of inspections and drill for your pass out parade, youll also do a few exams to test if you've retained what you've learnt and that's it. it'll be hard to start with but stay on top of your fitness and keep an eye out for the small details in inspections and you'll have a great time so many great memories from my time going through. best of luck to you!

@@JamesGrahamVlogs na I wouldn’t say so quite the opposite as you’re making sure you’re as ready as possible but do it more in a way that is just brushing up on your knowledge instead of full on revising, just make sure you look them all in the eye when answering, meaning, if one asks a question answer to them but after a few words start to direct the answer ‘around the room’ so to speak by glancing to others so they feel present. Very powerful interview technique shows confidence and clarity. Lastly, good luck! Let us know how it goes.!

I've got all the notes for all questions listed in description I'm going to highlight key info then memorise it and hope for the best on Friday

It'll be on the RAF website under the regiment gunner section somewhere in the boxes I believe (been a while since I've looked).

Hi there I was just wondering I see one of the questions what qualifications can you get. What does this mean does it mean what qualification I can earn in my apprenticeship or what qualifications do I need for my role?
@JakeGchannel10 ай бұрын
I think it all depends on what you're doing. If you are applying for an apprenticeship then I would mention both (what you can get in your apprenticeship and afterwards also) obviously if you are not applying for an apprenticeship then just state the qualifications you can gain from that specific role. Hope this helps.

@JakeGchannel thanks. Yeah I'm 16 and joining the raf as a regiment gunner after year 11 and I've got my interview Friday 15th👍

@@4manS1ngh Yeah that will be an awesome career I wished I did it at 16 and if you do 10 years of service you'll only be 26 which I know at 16 seems so old 😂but it comes around quick as I'm 26 this year 🤷♂😂. Keep focused and you'll do just fine just remember to answer as truthfully as possible it will yield better results. Keep us informed on how you get on.

so nervous for tomorrow mate, it’s my interview and i’m so forgetful, any tips? maybe facts about basic training? i’m logistics driver
@JakeGchannel3 ай бұрын
@@k2dirtytrakkies258 basic is 10 weeks and the raf have a section on their website that talks all about basic training and what it consists. Mainly its introduction (marching, oath taking, basic ironing etc) then IFPT (which is weapon handling, initial exposure, blue warrior etc) then final (final exam, and basically graduation). I would dive a little more into it, again, look at the raf website I believe it’s under your role somewhere (meaning when you click on the page for your role it’s somewhere to the bottom but it’s been a while since I’ve looked so take it with a pinch of salt) I don’t know anything about logistics but you need to know how long your phase 2 is and where plus what qualifications you’ll get etc. Nonetheless answer confidently and just do the best you can thats all you can do. Good luck!

I'm thinking of joining the RAF because ive been told there's many jobs you can transfer to civilian life is it true?
@JakeGchannel Жыл бұрын
Yeah I mean any form of the military is a great to have on your CV because getting in it let a lone staying there + progressing up is a huge achievement. Obv it all depends on the trade you choose but most would be great in the civie world. However i would say think of a few more reasons than that as its not easy to get into plus have that as your core reason for at least 4-5 years might wave.
@davegoldsmith402011 ай бұрын
I spent twenty three years in the RAF, years of military experience stands you in good stead for life after the military,. But life is a lot simpler if you take up a trade that is directly transferable to civilian life. that's what I told my grandson, so he joins in May as an Electrician. He already thinks he may move into the offshore wind farm industry post RAF. If he had been an Aircraft Electrician he would be limited to aircraft for example. From first walking into the recruitment office to starting training will be thirteen months. Stick with it, once you are in, take every opportunity to take any qualification you can, Start getting fit long before you end up taking your fitness test and keep the fitness up until after basic training. For for it and best of luck

How much time passed between your application online to your RAF interview?
@JakeGchannel Жыл бұрын
I put my application through in the middle of May and done my interview at the beginning of August so around 3 months bearing in mind I did take an extra month to re-try my DAA so it could of been much sooner.

@@andyyankz474 That's great to hear and I appreciate and am glad the videos are of use to you. Just remember another tip that maybe of use to you and others and one I have learned personally throughout this journey is to leave your ego at the door. For me it was my cardio, I didn't want to accept the level of cardiovascular fitness I was at so I tried running much faster and quicker than my body is capable of then finding myself failing at what I wanted it to achieve, resulting in low-confidence, doubtful thoughts etc constantly repeating the same cycle. In the end I just accepted where I am, lowered my expectations to a point where I'm capable of doing it but still pushes me to increase stamina or whatever I am aiming for. This, of course, could be taken from a universal standpoint, in any subject or area of the application not just fitness. Hope this helps.

I'm so nervous about my interview any ideas how to get through it
@JakeGchannel4 ай бұрын
@@Matt-nx5xp firstly accept that nerves will be there regardless so don’t think that the interview will go any worse because your nervous as everyone is. There’s no trade secret about passing an interview other than being confident and answering with clarity. If you have revised your answers and done mock run throughs then 99% of the time you will pass. Treat it more like a formal conversation more than a verbal examination on you, where they are getting to know you and you getting to know them so that also means you ask questions to gain a greater understanding of your role, how you can contribute to the air force and also ask questions about your recruiter (how long they have served, what role they did, what advise on areas you are concerned about) etc. Unfortunately nothing will cure your nerves but for me personally, I would look at the worst case scenario as nothing more than a little road block that I can learn from and that usually relaxes me. Hope some of this helps and good luck with the interview 🙂

@@brianjohnson9780 I hope you get in, bro! I’m only interested in the pilot roles. I spoke to the MOD the other day after not getting an answer from the RAF and was told I am indeed too old as the training and wait times can be a long time depending on what aircraft I wanted to fly. That, and the required service time would overlap with the minimum age of transitioning out of service. A bit of a bummer, but I have applied with commercial airlines to be a pilot and hope that leads to success.

Oh good grief... When I joined the RAF at Halton in 1968 any git like this waffling on like bollocks would have been chucked into a cold bath. Yes "the RAF is a 100 year old institution" (well spotted) but it won't remain so for much longer with videos like this. Do you really think this bollocks has anything to do with raising the quality? This is simply down-grading the whole institution. Dire.
