Best advice is to try it and if you fail, learn and try again. Very few succeed first time regardless of the amount of prep and generally you learn a lot more from failure - applies to anything worth getting in life.

A quick update to the aircrew selection process. After CBAT testing at Cranwell, the filter interview has now become SHINE pre recorded interview. If your CBAT scores are good enough you will be sent a link which opens a set of pre determined questions which you then record your answers. You get between 90secs and 2 minutes to answer, you can re record an answer if you stumble. The time scale is a week from your link going active. The questions are as mentioned, current events, NATO,AirPower- what is it? General things like why do you want to join the RAF. Lots of info about SHINE on Reddit links. This has now replaced the face to face interview before OASC. Fail this interview and its goodbye and thanks for trying. Pass and its on to OASC.

I just wanted to ask whether saying you are an air cadet is credited or accounted for during the selection process as I am currently an air cadet myself and I feel like the qualities I am gaining and will continue to gain will be incredibly advantageous for when joining the RAF - please share your views if you disagree with this. Finally, may I ask why you chose the multi-engine aircraft route? I am hoping to specialize in rotary aircraft - a chinook if possible.
@CuriousPilot90 Жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, I was in the Air Cadets for a little while when I was younger. I am not part of the recruitment process so these are only really my thoughts, but as long as you take advantage of what the Air Cadets can offer you I think it will help. When it comes to the selection process, leadership experience or times you have worked within a team will help, and the air cadets can offer you that opportunity. You can, of course, get those experiences elsewhere, but it should help that they were within a known organisation and in a military style environment. I chose multi-engine as my first choice as it provided the best work/life balance and locations for me and my family. Rotary was my original dream but I had to put it second for those previous reasons. Best of luck on your journey!

Hi, I’m not sure on the entry requirements for eye sight but it’s perfectly normal for aircrew to wear glasses with aircrew glasses being issued. Like you have done, take advice from the most up to date source for recruitment. If you are still eligible with your current eyesight then it shouldn’t have any effect on your interview/medical checks. Just approach them as you normally would! Hello, all I’ve ever wanted to do is fly fast jets, and I can’t get behind flying multi engines or rotors. Any advice on getting picked for a fast jet?
@CuriousPilot90 Жыл бұрын
The only advice I can really give is to try your best. It would help to have some aviation experience before arriving as every flight is graded and these add up to your overall performance report at the end which is used to assist with streaming. But ultimately, availability of spaces when you go through will play a part. All three of the types are brilliant offering different experiences. So come into it, driving for fast jets but accepting that the other types will still be a great career.

Thank you very much. I was wondering what the selection or streaming process was after you finish the basic flight training before you are dedicated a specialised aircraft type like fast jet and multi rotor. I have searched on the internet for answers but I haven’t been able to find any. I would love to fly in a Typhoon or F35B but I have come to realise that it is not your decision in what aircraft type you go into.
@CuriousPilot9010 ай бұрын
Hi! You are streamed into the main roles (multi engine, fast jet and rotary) after elementary flying training (EFT). This is done based on your performance during EFT, service need and your preference. Every effort will be made to fulfil your preference but if there are those more suitable for the roles they will be given that opportunity. But ultimately, the number of spaces available will be down to the service need. So to sum up, if you perform highly and there are fast jet slots available you should be able to get it but it cannot be guaranteed. Hopefully that helps. 😬

@CuriousPilot9011 ай бұрын
After 'Elemental flying training', this is the initial flying training you receive. You will then be streamed onto either Multi engine, Rotary or Fast jet. (I think RPAS is coming into that but i'm not sure yet) That is chosen firstly based on your performance during the initial training, then your preference or service need. After that depending on where you are streamed you will then carry out the training relevant to those platforms and at the end you will be role disposed to the aircraft available within your streamed area, (Chinnock and Puma within the rotary stream for example). This is determined again, by your performance, preference and service need.

Hi, everyone starts flying training at ‘Elementary Flying Training’ during this course you are taught the ‘Elementary’ parts of flying but are also graded for every trip. At the end of the course there are three streams, Fast jet/Multi Engine/Rotary and you can put a preference down on which ones you would prefer. Based on your performance, preference and what is available, you will be selected for one of the roles. With regard to moving roles/trades, it is possible but some of the entry requirements will still remain,for example age. Once you have finished training you commit to a return of service, the length of which differs depending on which role you are.

Im currently hating sixth form, Im year 12 (Just turned 17) and about to apply for an RAF apprenticeship with 2 years training and 3 years stay post training. Thats 5 years. By the time thats done I should be around 23 which is the final age to start pilot training. I would do pilot training after a levels but i am hating them a lot, and RAF apprenticeship seems like the only other options i can find. So, if i did an RAF apprenticeship and switched if i still wanted to be a pilot - after 5 years - will i be able to start that at age 23 even though that is the maximum age? I hope you reply soon as my applications are just starting :D
@CuriousPilot90 Жыл бұрын
Hi Samantha, great question, as you know from the video I wasn't enjoying my A levels too much either, I did go a different way but if I had stayed I would have maybe got there sooner. With regards to the recruitment age, it currently stands that the age cut off is 23 (Must have entered Initial Officer Training by your 24th birthday). So as long as you are below that age, applying should be accepted (As long as recruitment is open at that time). There is sometimes a bit of time between selection and starting so it might be an option that you actually apply for the role a little earlier just as you are finishing your apprenticship/degree whichever direction you choose to go. I would keep an eye on the recuitment website, just to keep up to date of the entry requirments. It was 25 years old when I applied and now 23, it's just an example of how things can change. I hope that helps.

This has been great to watch, and I kind of want to know your thoughts and opinions on this... I am currently 15, nearly 16. And I go to RAF Cadets. I have Cs in English, Science, WBQ, Religious studies etc, a D in maths, though I am expected a C and above in Maths for my last exam this year. I am currently REALLY interested in the RAF, and being a pilot is one of my dreams. I kind of do feel the way you described, that I feel it's unattainable, and i've tried to do my best research. I understand I need A levels, but I don't think i'm gonna be able to get those... so after doing my research, I realised a few things, I could go as an aircraft technician, do my level 3 NVQ qualification, (doing level 2 in school, got a B) then do an apprenticeship, then apply for officer role, since everything else, including my length of service by then will cross out the need for A levels. I was wondering your thoughts on this, and if you could sort of point me in the right direction anymore that I can. Thanks in advance!
@CuriousPilot9011 ай бұрын
It sounds like you have done research into the different avenues to take. The difference between when I went through and your journey is that the age restriction was higher for me so I'm not sure how that will affect you if this path takes you beyond 23 years old. ( Something you may have already researched or it would be good to put it past one of the recruiters in the recruitment office) If you can try to bump up those maths and english results to B's, that will only help no matter what avenue you decide to take. One of the benefits of this plan would be that even at the very least you will be qualified as an aircraft technician through the apprenticeship, that is still a positive outcome. Good luck!
@Joshe0811 ай бұрын
@@CuriousPilot90 Cheers, I spoke to one of the old Cadets in my Squadron who left in 2022 but came back to visit today, who is now an Officer in the RAF as a Weapons Systems Officer, and he also spoke about the age restrictions. Or in summary, he kind of said the same things you said. So uh yeah, thanks again!

Thank you very much for your time. And for reference I attended oasc in November 2021
@CuriousPilot902 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. There were rumours when I went through that the threshold was going to increase to 150, I don’t think that it ever did, even temporarily. Even if it was to, you should have an opportunity to retake the cbat depending on your progress and result of your previous time at OASC. From what I remember I think there was a time delay attached to that. With regards to age, yes it is crazy that the new cut off is 23 (24 by IOT) BUT! when I applied I was at the age cut off and had to apply for an age waiver. So although that would not be ideal, if you have what they want there are examples (me included) who have been successful after the age cut off. From what it sounds like, you are doing all the right things. Hopefully they will open up more slots soon, there was a similar action in 2010 where they paused recruitment but that caused more issues so hopefully this will be more temporary and you hear something soon!

It would be best to double check the recrutment website, but most degrees will be valuable. This is the current criteria for joining: 'Have GCSEs at Grade C/4 or SNE at Grade 5 or SCE Standard Grades at Grade 2/SNE 5 in English and Maths and at least three other subjects. Have at least 2 A2 Levels/3 Highers at Grade C or above (excluding General Studies, Critical Thinking or Citizenship Studies) which must total a minimum of 64 UCAS points'

Insightful and interesting video, thank you. Probably all you get asked about, but with regards to the Pilot role, are there any other indirect routes into joining or flying training you know of please? I am now 23 and have enquired about applying for an age waiver but been told they are not available for RAF- Pilot. I am sitting in the RN waiting list but have been told 2025/26 is the next viable and potential intake. With this in mind, I have come through uni and UAS and would like to know if there is a sponsorship or cadetship, recognised by the military, in order to lend myself to joining, (e.g the Euro- NATO or RAF reserves routes?). I understand this is a novel request and mechanism to enquire, however the AFCOs are short on internal info. Any advice or info would be great, thanks.
@CuriousPilot90 Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, this is the difficulty of the age restriction being much lower now. I'm not sure of any sponsorships that provide a route. I have heard and seen in the past of a limited number of RPAS pilot's who have managed to jump across. It may be that you could enquire about the possibility of joining as RPAS (Which is still a fulfilling role) and if there is still an opportunity to transfer across later on in your career. Good luck.
@AlexCallaghan-kj1nc Жыл бұрын
RPAS does interest me, I have heard of SR’s for Airtanker, but I believe it is accessible to CPL Pilots, I will look into any other routes. Thank you for your help.

Hi, I was just wondering about when you spoke about leaving your initial role to change to pilot. Did you have to completely quit and restart your application process again as a pilot instead, or are there routes within the RAF that allow you to transfer roles?

Hi! Sorry for the delay! You can stay within the service and you transfer across. I went from a non-commissioned role to a commissioned one so when I moved across, I simply started the initial officer training.

Hi mate, currently interested in a career as a pilot in the RAF. This video really helped me decide that that is what i wanted to do. Currently in a local gliding club and army cadets. What degrees do you think would help me most when becoming a pilot? I think im going to try get a degree in physics or something of that nature. Thanks
@Boggler343 Жыл бұрын
Also do you think i should go to college before joining the RAF and trying to become a pilot ‘upfront’ or should i join the RAF in a different role at first as you did? I am similar to you in that im really not enjoying school at the moment, but am willing to stick it out if it means i can become a pilot.
@CuriousPilot90 Жыл бұрын
It's difficult to say! I wouldn't know what degree would be best. I would recommend to go for something that would interest you so at the very least it can keep you engaged. With the lowering of the intake age, it might be tight to apply for another role and transfer across. You could always try first and if you are unsuccessful then apply for another role and try again later. You need to weigh up all the options and workout a realistic timeline on where everything will fit. It might be an option to head to your 'local' AFCO and speak with one of the recruitment team in there. They might suggest a more optimal route for you. Either way, whatever you decide, good luck with it!

Quick question, if you don’t qualify to become the pilot you wanted to be, but get a job in that Air Force field, could you later on try to qualify and become a pilot later on? Possibly years later?
@CuriousPilot90 Жыл бұрын
I hope this answers your question correctly… if you apply for the role of a Pilot but are unsuccessful, yet you join the RAF in a different role. You can still apply to be a Pilot again later on although you will still be restricted by the entry requirements. (In rare circumstances, you can be granted an age waiver if you are just past the age cut off) I can’t remember the exact amount of time but you will need to wait before applying again, I think something like 6 or 12 months. The RAF recruitment team will be able to provide you with more information on this. I followed this path, starting within the non-commissioned ranks and then applying at a later date.

@CuriousPilot90 Жыл бұрын
Not having joined a UAS I can’t really say. There were several people who joined up with me who came from a UAS. If you are heading to University anyway it seems like a good option to at least get exposure and experience to flying and the RAF system. There will probably be more information on student forums or official websites that can provide you with more information. It will help having some flying under your belt before starting training or even applying for the role. But still possible without, I applied with no previous experience but I did have experience within the wider RAF.
