2023 SsangYong Rexton Ultimate Plus UK review - the Land Rover killer is finally here!

I recently traded in a Disco 5 HSE 2017 TD 6 for an Ultimate Plus. Did it as I was fed up with the hopeless reliability of the thing. Eight weeks in, could not be happier, does everything i want. Carries 7 people, tows my 1800kgs caravan, is comfortable and roomy, and apparently, is very unlikely to leave me stranded 200 miles from home, with three grandchildren and a caravan, like the LR did!

I own a Ssangyong Stavic 2015 model almost 10 years with 150,000km and still haven't miss a beat. I'm looking forward to this new Rexton. 😀

With snobbery and low self-esteem aside, there is no reason one can't consider this as a solid alternative to the range rover. As a former owner of a Lexus I was totally taken off guard when I bought my Rexton 2 years ago. Be it build quality, cabin refinement or smooth drive train, this car is up there looking down on those big names.

I'm a hyundai owner of Santa fe limited, veracruz limited, tucson limited, palisade limited and the fact this gets 40 mpg is amazing !!! Would like to see power folding 3rd row and quilted seats throughout. But wow !!! This will definitely put others on notice for mpg

I own the Land rover discovery 4, and Mitsubishi outlander, I am quite impressed with the cars Rexton built like a tank in Taiwan and has an adaptive cruise. Count me this year

I am on my second Ssangyong the build quality is a reason, both Musso's a MK2 and Mk5. The sad thing is there is a company who turn the Musso pickup truck into a campervan but Ssangyong UK won't import it after the last attempt with the converted people carrier.

Very good! The delays (across all manufacturers to be honest) are less about the takeover and more about securing new suppliers outside of Russia and Ukraine. The majority of these issues have now been resolved.

How does the warranty work if you wish to take to another garage for servicing etc

Hi! It's the same as any other new vehicle in the UK, as long as you service the car in accordance with SsangYong's requirements your warranty is valid. So that means any garage using SsangYong's parts are fine to use.

Indeed, up from 185bhp to 205bhp. Generated engine sound levels are about the same (was always fantastically quiet IMO), but with the increase in power and the wider spread of gears the revs during use are far lower, so yes it's quieter! Fuel economy is covered in the video 39mpg!

Hi Ian, the worldwide factory warranty is 5 years, so they will cover the car until that finishes. The extra 2 years (like the UK) is underwritten by another firm and it's likely they won't provide cover overseas, but check with your provider.

Hi, not quite the situation, but yes they have transitioned from an Indian owner to a Korean one. The UK operation is unaffected by any changes to the parent company, so any warranties are perfectly fine.

KG Mobility bought ssangyong. They will continue selling and developing the models as well as create new models like the new TORRES which will be available to Europe this Fall 2023

Hi. Nice 4x4. Could you redo the fuel economy test again please? You must reset the trip computer when stationary to get a true reading. I have a 3ltr V6 VW Touareg and on a run I can achieve 42.6 MPG. I also achieve an average of 23.3 MPG when towing my twin axle caravan. Edit…..forgot to mention this Ssangyong doesn’t come equipped with radar operated cruise control does it? I could live with the ungainly look of the sides of this vehicle but only just. The front and rear look the bees knees.

Hi Gary, you'll be pleased to know that I reset the trip computer after filming at the first location so the reading is genuine for the trip. Most of my customers report 36-40 mpg unladen and about 25-30 mpg when towing (dependent on what you're towing of course!). No adaptive cruise on this model sadly, just one of the cuts made to keep the pricing keen. You should check out our black edition, the black wheels really change the look from a profile view in our opinion.

According to the website it's a 5 year 100k warranty.

This video was made in 2022. The warranty is now 5 years 100k miles for all models ordered from 2023, however you can still upgrade to 7 years 150k miles if you wish.

I’m a fan of this car but to claim it has near Land Rover Air Suspension quality ride is absurd. The Rexton is a bone shaker and anyone who has one will agree. Are we bothered? No.

Well it depends, if you have a snow covered/muddy (low traction basically) road then you can use 4WD high. It's all to do with the differentials locking when in 4WD modes.

Why lie? Trying to compare this to a Land Rover let alone a Range Rover is a huge stretch! No one is saying this vehicle isn’t good but trying to up class this thing to a completely different segment is pure false information. Thanks for the input. In the UK at least, the majority of D segment SUV's usually complete two jobs, towing and providing a luxury ride/driving experience. The comparison to Land Rovers products are down to the similarities in dimensions, towing ability, ride quality and luxury/spec. Both complete the same jobs and are D segment SUV's, no fibs, just facts.

I'm not so sure, people are getting wise to the reliability issues, and lots of folk are considering their options to save money, one of which is this! We are certainly seeing a lot of Land Rover used stock coming in part exchange against the Rexton now.
