Konnichiwa and welcome to another edition of SUMO PRIME TIME. It’s Day 15 and the final day of the November Grand Sumo Tournament in Fukuoka. What a showdown it was on Day 14. With Kirishima and Atamifuji tied for the lead, Kirishima took care of business by defeating Atamifuji to take sole possession of the lead. So, after 14 days, it was Kirishima with the lead with 12 wins and 2 losses. Atamifuji still remained in Kirishima’s rear-view mirror at 11-3. On Day 15, Atamifuji needed to win his regulation match to keep his title hopes alive. Was the 21-year-old up-and-comer able to come through in clutch moment to force a playoff with Kirishima? Or did Ozeki Kirishima rose to the occasion to win the championship outright at the end of 15 regulation matches? Find out who walked away with the Emperor’s Cup in the 2023 SUMO FINALE!

Hey Sumo Primetime, I've heard many sumo wrestlers say they want to grow the sport internationally but I don't see any results from the JSA or NHk or whoever. The only reason I have become a fan of sumo is because of Natto Sumo. If Natto Sumo goes away so do I. Natto Sumo is the absolute best way for casual foreign fans to watch sumo.

I do like the highlights they started doing. However, at least here on the east coast of the US, the NHK highlights post a full day after. This tourney I watched Natto and Sumo Jason to see what happened, then the next day checked out the NHK highlights for the commentary in English. I like watching the tourney from different sources and points of view.

What a boring basho. Extremely low level. Ozekis with 5 or 6 losses, Sekiwakes can't make Ozeki or are demoted to Komosubi. There are no candidates for Komosubi for next basho. No contenders to compete with Kirishima for the title. Not even a Yokozuna to fight with. Where is the time where there were 3 or 4 Yokozunas fighting for the title? Takakeisho can kiss goodbye to yokozuna promotion. He can't win 2 in a row. Every basho is a different yusho. No star. It's like a lottery. Kirishima won this one. Pathetic.
@Ganbarizer10 ай бұрын
Atamifuji did amazing. 11-4 is no small feat and for a newcomer like him to post scores like that means that he has high potential to go even further. Kirishima is a highly skilled wrestler when he's not injured and is one of the few to give Terunofuji issues. This was a year of lots of other skilled/talented rikishi getting seriously injured and having to sit out. That's part of the reason why we had so many different yusho winners. Hakuoho, Teru, Asanoyama, Kirishima, and Takakeisho were all marred by injuries.

Thank you for the tournament coverage. But please don't put a picture of the tournament winner's celebration in the thumbnail! It ruins the suspense of finding out who won and makes me not even want to see the video now. I know it's a small thing, but for fans in other countries these videos are our only way of finding out what happens, and the thumbnail kind of dampened the experience for me.

What an exciting end to 2023 grand sumo! Kirishima is amazing! Quiet but deadly. Atamifuji is disappointed but that young man's time is coming. Wow--Two runner up bashos in a row and he's only 21. Couldn't follow this tournament since november was so stressful for me, but I'm really happy to see Kirishima take it home, and not surprised at all that Takakeisho didn't make it as Yoko. Hoping that Kirishima kan continue this run and we can finally have a new Yokuzuna next year. Poor Teru needs to retire before he completely breaks his body, he's done enough to cement his legacy. Atamifuji is very interesting as well! Looking forward for the return of Hakuoho too. I find Kotonowakas style of Sumo infinitely boring, but he's damn good, and he will deservedly make Ozeki next year I think. Also hoping Wakatakakage can return to Makuuchi soon and kick some butt!

I'm a sumo newb so I'm probably blowing hot gas, but I think Kotonowaka looks like he could reach the top spot. He's not one of my favorites but he's quick, strong and seems like he has many different ways to win. Atamifuji has the goods but obviously after seeing his day 14 match he's a nervous Nellie. Gotta have the fire in the belly to be great at any sport.

Twice in a row Atamifuji ended as contender till the last day, all of that right after 1 division debut and at 21, that is a superstar in the making right there. He sitill has to work out his flaws. He is mainly being beaten by experience, but in regards to strengh and technique he can hold his own very well.

Kirishima has learned from watching Atamifujis other matches. When he moves to the side the other rikishi allow him to get space which allows him to escape, and counter. kirishima was quick enough to keep contact and push him out. Well deserved cup.

I like how some people are complaining about "spoilers" like this is a video game or movie. Its like that one friend that hasn't seen the football game and wants everyone else in the friend group not to talk about it because he hasn't watched it yet. The audacity. Sorry to say, but the world doesn't stop for you. Maybe turn off notifications if you dont want to know? Just a thought.
@aszechy10 ай бұрын
Of course the video itself will have the results, but it should't be in the thumbnail because that will pop up any time you open youtube. I always turn off my notifications for senshuraku because I only watch the bouts in the evening, but today afternoon I was just looking for some music and forgot I had to be careful, habitually opened youtube, and there is a badly disguised Kiri holding the cup, right in my face - suspense gone. How hard would it be to just put a picture of the cup itself or something? Especially when the only "legit" way we have to watch the bouts, the NHK world highlights, will only be up tomorrow...

hello and thank you for the exciting channel. Very interesting to learn more abot sumo! It would be very interesting if you create some "educational" videos for the subject: what does mean 8 in the tournament? If someone win/loses 8 fights, how does it impact his overall position? And what are these "things" 😊 attached to the belt? What is the practical or traditional meaning of it? Also does the color of the belt have any meaning or it is pure decorative thing? thanks again!
@SAArete10 ай бұрын
The NHK has released a series of short videos called "Sumopedia" that do a great job of explaining the basics. You can find most of them on KZbin or on NHK's English website. The significance of 8 wins (or more) in a tournament is that it's a "kachi-koshi," or in English, a "winning record." The salaried wrestlers (known as "sekitori") in the top 2 divisions of pro sumo are the ones who fight 15 matches per major tournament. They have one match each day of the 15-day tournament. When they reach 8 wins, they've achieved a winning record and will likely move up in rank for the next major tournament in 2 months. The opposite is a "make-koshi", or "losing record", meaning 8 or more losses in a tournament, usually leading to a drop in rank. A kachi-koshi for divisions 3-6, who only have 7 matches per tournament, is 4 or more wins. A make-koshi for them is 4 or more losses. Extreme win/loss records lead to larger jumps/falls in rank. The dangling strings hanging from the belt are called "sagari". If you look up "Sumopedia #19 Sagari (Sumo Belt Cords)", they explain the significance of sagari. Centuries ago, the wrestlers used to wear a sort of apron while they wrestled, but those aprons were bulky and awkward and tended to get in the way. The sagari are a substitute for that apron that is less intrusive. Salaried wrestlers (the "sekitori" mentioned above) have stiffened silk sagari. The wrestlers in divisions 3-6 have regular cotton sagari, which are not stiffened. The ability to wear a colored belt is a privilege for the sekitori. They are allowed to wear a silk, colored mawashi (belt) with the color of their choice. Some colors, such as white, are prohibited. There is no real significance to the color of the belt, mostly just preference. For the wrestlers in divisions 3-6, they compete in plain, black, cotton mawashi. But they're allowed to pick the color of their sagari.

Once again Sumo Prime Time spoils the tournament outcome in the thumbnail of the video! Last time it was a picture of Abi holding the emperor’s cup. This time it’s a barely pixelated Kirishima holding the cup. Sumo fans can identify the rikishi by their silhouette alone…STOP PUTTING THE YUSHO WINNER IN THE THUMBNAILS!!!!!! WHY IS THAT SO DIFFICULT?????
@Ganbarizer10 ай бұрын
Take it easy. That's par the course in most sports and especially sumo. The yusho winner is plastered all over news articles and online places. Sports news and content makers can't just stop because some people haven't watched all the matches yet and don't want to know the outcome until they do.
@jarviswester656510 ай бұрын
Don’t be so obtuse. The stated purpose of sumo prime time is to give some official sumo content to foreign fans, who, by the way, have no legitimate way to watch the matches, especially in the US. So the only way we can watch the matches is by various channels posting them on KZbin. None of those channels ever spoil the winner in the thumbnail of the video. Only the JSA’s official channel spoils the yusho winner in its thumbnails. It’s idiotic to make excuses.
