I just bought a 2023 Toyota Corolla LE hybrid several weeks ago (June of 2023). On the first tank of gas I babied it for break in and got over 60 mpg. 😅. My last five years I had been driving the Toyota Avalon. For my first 600 miles I have been very impressed with this car. The seating is very comfortable and it handles much better than I expected. I bought the Corolla for its efficiency and reliability and I’m a happy owner.

5th year Mk IV Prius driver here and ex turbo diesel fan…..yeah don’t hate me …..not as pokey or quite as good mpg on motorways as my Civic Tdi but the Toyota is better in every other respect, cheap to run, easy and relaxing to drive, comfortable, totally reliable. Never understood why motoring “journalists” focus on 0-60 …in the real world of traffic and speed cameras away from a test track, it’s irrelevant ….30-50 more important. In reality the electric poke provides plenty of low down torque. ALL ecvt’s have some drone so I wish they’d stop going on about it. It’s only there on really hard acceleration or steep hills. If you own one you forget about it in a few days of driving it. Anyway I ordered one blind to prevent getting caned on company car diesel BIK and it turned out to be a great move. I have just bought a Corolla 1.8 and have completed 2000 miles worth of mixed driving. I get on my 1.8 mile trip to Tesco between 80 and 95 mpg and have the photographic proof by photographing the read out that comes up when the engine is turned off. I also had a recent holiday in north wales and the car produced an average fuel consumption of 63 mpg. That was motorway, mountain passes and town driving. The thing they never mentioned is the cars safety systems. With their radar controlled cruise control the car could literally drive itself. It makes driving long distances a breeze. I would definitely recommend it, and by the way i exchanged a 4 year old Focus vignale to buy the Toyota. The build quality is better on the Corolla, it's quieter, and the seats are more comfortable. It just lacks the rear seat space. It comes down to what your own needs are when buying a car.

@scottscottydog Hi, I bought the Corolla this year brand new, previously I was driving a Ford Focus. Since writing that reply I have noticed that since the weather has got colder, it takes the engine longer to heat up so shorter journeys starting with a cold engine have obviously increased fuel consumption but I am still averaging 60 mpg. I have no complaints with the car and enjoy driving it. I think that it's a good idea to look at the Honda and any other car that you might be interested in. Just make sure that you test drive them all. I've heard good things about the Honda, but I was put off by the total lack of interest coming from the staff in the showroom. You may have better luck. The charging cost for the MG4 listed rather assumes that you’d charge at daytime rates, which you’d only do if you need to recharge in a hurry. Mostly you’d use off-peak rates like Octopus Go, which would cost you 7.5p per kwh after midnight (0030 to 0430). That’s around 2p per mile. The point about public charging is spot on though, so a hybrid makes sense if you don’t have your own charger. Maintenance costs are an issue too though, as there is a lot more to go wrong in a hybrid.
@dd9ag Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't having a night time off peak tarrif mean you have to pay more for your daytime electricity though?
@Brian-om2hh Жыл бұрын
Exactly Dave..... Although once your Octopus 7.5p EV tariff ends Dave, the cost will rise to 12p per kwh. Still way cheaper than buying petrol though...... And the cost of public charging can be reduced by subscribing to the charge network you want to use. My local charge network (so far only in North Lancashire and South Cumbria) charges around 45p per kwh if you subscribe. And that's after you've used your monthly allocation of 30 to 40-odd kwh of charge which is part of your subscription.

Great video, and a truly great car. However, I'm not at all impressed with the MPG motorway figures. I have a 2012 Toyota Auris Hybrid, and I easily get 69 to 82 mpg on the motorway, and the same plus a bit more city driving. I think that's a very impressive fuel economy overall. I have a very light foot, and I generally drive at 60 to 62 mph on the motorway,

And the price is only 2 million Pounds and barely does more mpg than my 14 year on diesel Focus estate. Cars are so out of touch for the normal working person and something for the wealthy. My first new car was a top of the range Renault Megane mk2 1.9 diesel 2003 and cost £14.5k now the Megane starts at £37K just madness.

First Corolla (1994) : 12.500£. Second Corolla (Auris) (2009) 20.000£. Third Corolla (2024) : 40.000£. All automatics, 2 petrol and 1 hybrid. Though the first one was the lowest spec available (Toyota policy at that time for automatics), the Auris was the highest spec possible at that time (Toyota changed its policy) and the third one is the highest spec possible overall.

My 2019 C4 cactus 120 1.5 diesel auto gets 60mpg combined easily, and 70mpg doing 110kph in sixth on the motorway. I don't see this Corolla's economy as anything noteworthy when you consider the weight and complexity. At this price I'd go for an MG4 LR, and for people that can charge at home on off peak power, EVs are much cheaper to run, add the lack of maintenance and it's a no brainer.

Diesel costs more to buy then petrol here in the UK.
@matthewnightingale4675 Жыл бұрын
You have explained perfectly the reason hybrids make little sense and why you'd be mad to buy one instead of an EV considering price comparison. Fuel economy of a hybrid is not much better than a modern efficient petrol and mostly just as good as diesel's of the past few years.
@alanhowemusic2457 Жыл бұрын
@@matthewnightingale4675The EV revolution is a fast, we have 7 years to go before petrol and diesel cars can’t be manufactured anymore. In the U.K. we have a woefully inadequate electric grid as if you remember in January 2023 the government were warning about possible power cuts and the placed two coal fire power stations on stand-by to furnish the grid. Can’t anyone see in 7 years and beyond if everyone starts buying electric vehicles only the U.K. power grid will not be able to cope with the increased power consumption with all the electric vehicles being charged between the hours of 7pm through until 7am even though at this time most people will be in bed but most kitchen appliances will be active and in the winter the boilers will also be on line consuming power. Even if the Government decided to put trillions of £ to build nuclear power stations we are talking over at leat a 15 year league time before the are built and on line for the grid. So when all your street has electric cars in it be prepared for power cuts.

stop trolling - you are comparing NEFZ to WLTP, HUGE difference, also 1l of DIESEL obviously contains more energy than 1l of PETROL

In Finland diesel car owners pay a higher road tax, which is meant to equalize their running costs with petrol cars. Back in the day diesel was cheaper than petrol, and diesel cars consume less fuel, so the tax made it uneconomical to own a diesel if one drove less than 25,000-30,000km per year. I believe many other countries have a similar system. In this case the Corolla makes sense, because its fuel economy is very close to diesels, but the owner only needs to pay a standard road tax.

Honda went massive and Toyota the opposite. I don't understand how they designed a family hatchback which is that small in the back. You need to get adults in the back. They couldn't extend the wheelbase by 5-10cms? Seems a large own goal as people will immediately go to the opposition.
