Great job on the less plastic interior thats a big plus too bad they still used the horrible touch buttons on the steering and other buttons😕

Interesting...soft plastic is no plastic?...yes, it is still plastic and no longer recylable since 3 Materials are needed to achieve the softness in layers...brilliant feature...this is a step backward into the past, with about 15kg more weight per car and higher CO2 footprint during production.

Seems to be a deliberate pattern of VW for some reason. First they introduce a new car with cheap materials only to upgrade it later in the facelift. They already did that with the T-Roc and previous Polo generations and probably gonna change the interior of the T-Cross with the next facelift too.

ID3 driver here. I'm glad there's finally more paint options and that they've addressed the quality. Personally I always find the headrest a bit too far back, can't angle it forward or adjust it like on the passat. But sadly it looks like they haven't changed the shortcut buttons on the dash. Honestly never use them apart from the climate button. Would have preferred some more useful shortcuts like vehicle/charge info. Also agree with you Thomas, the rear window buttons should be there - a solution in search of a problem! I don't agree with you about the brakes - they are poor and don't inspire confidence when driving. We also have the new shape Kia Niro EV. Honestly much better car overall (for the same money now). Delivers much better interior quality, seat comfort, practicality, braking feel, efficiency and range compared to the VW. I always pick the Kia when going for a motorway trip because the range is far more reliable (within 10-15%). Whereas in the id3 I find it delivers 30% less range than quoted, especially when using Aircon. Will definitely option the heat pump in my next EV as the heating has been an issue (how much it affects range) with both cars during this winter.

The BMS of the ID.3 line is atrociously bad. We sold ours after 1 year. Nice ride, but utterly unreliable on range.

I test drove overnight the ID3 pre-facelift last year with the 58 kwh battery. Interior quality was trash, the seats couldn't adjust to more relaxed and sporty feel. Breaking and acceleration was actually good though. It was during March and it was about +0 C outside in which it had a range of 250 km (90% battery), so that will need a huge upgrade. Glad to see the interior having a bit of an upgrade and good thing about the facelift is the upgraded exterior making it look much MUCH nicer and interior seems to look like an actual premium car. The old one looked like a Volkswagen Up! lol.

250 km on the medium battery and 90 % charge at 0 deg C is not good enough?! What?! It still blows my mind it is possible to drive distances like that ON A BATTERY.

And honestly, MKBHD is NOT an automotive journalist. Frankly, I think he should stick to the tech he knows and not act like he knows all about cars. Just because he has owned the most expensive Teslas ever built does NOT give him any cred and I've unsubscribed from his channel as a result.

@@RexFlashMinistries He makes videos about EVs. Not sure how you can get mad at him about that. He’s a tech enthusiast, and many EVs that are being released are quite techy. VW’s EVs are fine, but they aren’t as techy as other EVs like Polestars, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E, Rivian R1T/S, and not to mention, Tesla’s vehicles That’s why he owns a Tesla. He gives credit to other companies all of the time. He praised the Chevy Bolt for how affordable and practical *enough* it is, even though I believe that the Bolt is not a great example of what an EV can be. Luckily, there are affordable EVs on the horizon that have way better specs/charging speeds than the Bolt. You won’t see him covering the ID3 for obvious reasons. It’s not even available for sale in the US. Tesla’s Model 3 is in more markets than the ID3. Not sure if Marques has covered the ID4, but again, that car isn’t all that techy.

I was in Wolfsburg less than 3 weeks ago, and our tour guide was a representative of all VW factories. Really nice chap; I asked him about the ID3 facelift in which he basically mentioned everything shown in this video. I asked him charged questions like “did the last CEO get “let go” rather quickly because of negative feedback quality wise from recent VW models?” He just laughed and said “well of course I can’t answer that”, but his facial expressions gave me the answer. The touch sensitive steering wheel buttons will be gone by 2024 even for the ID line, but they currently only work with that infotainment for the ID and Golf line of cars. This facelift was launched 12 months early; I’m guessing VW didn’t want the negative feedback to linger any longer than it already has.

Re: Power window buttons; Absolutely prefer 4. What a miserly cost cutting measure that was, really surprised they didn't fix it. Overall agree that this is what this car should have been from the beginning, personally I can't see its sales increase that much. They really screwed the pooch with how much the first cars were compromised .

This is so true. I got sick of VW cutting cost in such an arogant way. Another reason why after buying 3 new VW (1997-2019) I switched brands and I don't regret it even a tiny bit! VW perceived quality was top notch in the 2000s and 2010s, now it is a joke... No wonder Peugeot 208 dethroned the Golf for 2 years in a row, and how with the Chinese coming there is no way VW will survive with such cheap tricks

I have heard that pressing the rear button longer starts to blink and you can open all 4 Windows at once...just a feature which is hardly achievable with 4 Buttons.

I think it's the right step forward to not alienate fans and owners of ICE Golfs from EVs. Interesting to see what they come up with for the GTX to try capture the GTI and R crowd!

Really good, subtile improvements! Looks way better now inside as well as on the outside. However, I still hate that they force you to compromise if you want the big battery. That’s still a huge fail by VW. Imagine you choose to buy a 60k€ car and you can’t have a glass roof or a tow bar like less expensive variants because of weight. Seriously Volkswagen, wtf?

agreed : "acceptable". Still not the comfortable atmosphere you get in a Golf and far too little possibilities to create your "personal" ID. I can understand more standard cars is cheaper to build, however as a customer you don't feel that it cheaper... certainly not...

US driver with a '15 GTI and this is what I want. Ticks all the boxes. Oh. And I also have a TDI sportswagen. Would keep the long range car and get the ID3 as a 100 mile radius errand car but a quality car experience. (I got both veedubs used slight flaws as off season deals through web surfing.). Would cry to part with the GTI. Now...price. Way over 35k it's back to looking at a Bolt.

Our labrador travels on the rear seat. The 2 seat backseat with a hole in the middle would be a no-go for us for that reason only. Our long travels are End-2-End in Europe and big battery would be requirement. So otherwise the space would be enough, but the seat ruins it for us.

Complete agree with you on the window switches Thomas, there should be 4 switches. Also get rid of the haptic button BS and use real buttons you can push. Also I want a fabric interior without leather and no leatherette as well.

Rear window switches are rarely used so this is a good solution for ergonomics, as you will always hit left and right for the front ones.

Thanks Thomas! I love my “old” ID.3, it drives great. There are some okay small upgrades, but overall not enough reasons to upgrade for this facelifted version. That a blue color though, love it. 😍😊

For the ‘REAR’ window button, I also don’t get the design, but I heard if you long press the button till it illuminates, then the driver’s window button could control all four windows at once, which I suppose does add something (not many reviews have mentioned that either). Of course it’s not a intuitive design since most people probably won’t know till reading the manual (if they ever do)

Great review as always. Shiny black plastic trim in the interior is so cheap looking and will scratch badly over time, especially on the inner doors.

They need to bring this to the U.S. market. I can see the Golf GTi/R being discontinued in the U.S. in the not too distant future in lieu of VW going ALL EV. This would be the perfect replacement

Yohn was doing a road trip through Peru with his VW ID3. He was driving on an isolate rode, when he heard a weird noise coming from the trunk. He stopped to see what it was and discovered that his spare tire was flat. He decided to replace the tire, but when he took off the old tire, he saw that something strange was going on. The tire started to move and grew into a gigantic tire that was looking for blod. Yohn tried to flee, but the tire chased him and eventually murdered him in a grusome way. Nobody knows what happened to Yohn, but some say that his ghost still haunts that isolate rode, seeking revenge on the tire that killed him. And if you ever drive through that rode, be careful, because the tire can strike at any moment.

Plasticky interior was my biggest gripe with the ID3 and why I didn’t buy one. But these changes are great. When the time comes to sell my Tesla, I’ll check them out again! I did like how the ID3 drove, I just want an R version! That said, I do love my Tesla M3.

for the power window control, i dont mind the two buttons setup since i accidentally open rear windows when i want to open the front one. this setup would solve that

Is the olive green the same shade as they use on the Taigo? I much prefer the McKenna Turquoise, is it still available on the facelifted ID3?

You have not mentioned anything on the speakers. Has it changed / improved if compared to the previous version or still only in the front?

Several good updates, but I find it frustating that the buttoms at the steering wheel isn't changed. Just that small detail will make the difference for me.

The green colour reminds me slightly of the oak green used on the Mk2 Golf Gti.

Thanks for the update on the ID.3. I'm in the USA and an owner of ID.4 1st Edition Y2021, and looking at the infotainment of this "updated" ID.3 is a MAJOR disappointment. I don't see any meaningful improvement at all. For about the same price, just buy a Tesla Model 3.

Really likeable car, hopefully it will be reasonably priced, it should be under £40k. Not sure why this is the new one and they are already saying there’s an update coming and it will be the properly good one with better screens and buttons. I think the Jeep Avenger and Smart #1 are a bit nicer. The BYD Atto3 is more practical if it ever shows up.

For a commuter car this is the standard. 200 HP EV motor is more than enough to get into trouble. I live in SoCal so one motor is enough. The battery ----Im fine plugging in every 2 or 3 days with the smaller battery. Of course, it must come in Thomas Blue!

It's interesting that they're already abandoning the mesh/grid pattern on the front bumper, when that pattern is still quite prominent on the ID Buzz which is not even delivered yet. Seemed like it was part of the new design language, yet it's completely eliminated with this refresh.

I am happy for this change...away from this childish style of the former Designer...the new Chief Mr. Blume immediatelly removed the designer with the new one coming from Bentley. The new ID Design was no VW Style at all and no one thought without the VW Batch, that these are VWs at all. Buzz and somehow ID7 has this awfull design, since it was too late to make changes...perhaps facelift will change a lot.

Interesting choices. I don't think drum brakes, manual struts and removal of some buttons are that critical for most people. Not being able to add a glass roof and fifth seat because the rear axle is maxed out is concerning indeed. Seeing adjustable suspension is quite nice at this price level. For me, however, the absolutely dreadful entertainment system is a deal breaker that would prevent me from buying this vehicle. Nice overview Thomas. Looking forward to you wearing Thomas blue pants someday.

I have similar "bad" Entertainment in my Passat GTE, but I do not car really, since I only use Android Auto...as soon you connected Android Auto, it will always start automatically and you will never see the VW Software...only for some car settings, which you are doing the first two weeks...and that's it.

I would probably go for the 58kwh battery but the no 5th seat option on the bigger battery model is a big miss in my opinion. People buy hatchbacks for practicality. Also, other manufacturers don’t seem to have that issue so why VW. Finally, the lack of physical buttons and still unimpressive infotainment system means I’ll probably be waiting for the next iteration of the ID 3.

Over 40.000€ for the base version.🤯 Not so sure about current pricing, but you used to be able to get the mk7 GTI Performance or a Passat Wagon for under 40.000€, now that's just about enough to get the most basic version of this compact car. Cars are becoming a luxury for normal people.

I can't believe it's still not getting backlit touch sliders, the new infotainment screen or non-BS capacitive buttons on the steering wheel until 2024!? Why bother updating it and not do a proper job at the same time!? Should have just waited until 2024 to bring out the full face lift, it's still less than three years old now. I guess with the new MG3 winning all the plaudits and the new Mégane here they're panicking and trying to keep sales up.

3 to 4 years is just the normal facelift cycle the last 20 years fror any car...nothing unusual at all. The cycle is already in planning, while the first edition is starting production...regardless, if the CEO changes during this period and tries to change anything...you can not stop this process easily. There is a chain of hundreds of suppliers which you need to orchestrate, which takes years.

As ever a thoughtful review. As someone who has owned several VWs, going back to an early Rabbit in late 1970s New England, it is great to see the VW and the ID3 coming back on song. I could live with one of these newer ID3s though I would prefer to wait for another further revision with the promise of real buttons again. So far as I can see from elsewhere the ID3 UK pricing will be somewhere between £38k and £42k, with maybe a bit more to add for extras. A Mazda MX30 either EV or R EV appears to cost somewhere between £31k and £36k with all extras in the price. I expect much of the difference in price between the two can be attributed to the completely different battery strategies VW and Mazda are taking. So forgetting reasons why you would rather have an ID3 or a MX30 - Thomas has reported both are pleasant to drive at various times here - it is worth thinking about the two different battery strategies. We do not know for sure yet but I would guess the small battery ID3 and MX30 each have a comparable range with the latter doing about 125 miles. It looks like the biggest battery ID3 can do around 300 miles, while the MX30 R EV PHEV has a combined range of around 400 miles. This review already reports some compromises VW have to make to the ID3 to accommodate the largest battery - no tow bar or sun roof, and perhaps less space - whereas so far as I can see no compromises are needed from the MX30 R EV. The Mazda battery strategy should at least lead one to question whether ever bigger batteries is the right way to go. Ever bigger batteries obviously mean more weight, longer charging times except perhaps at a high speed charger where you actually get the advertised charging speed (rare in the UK), more cost, and more engineering compromises and complexity. They also require a lot of scarce minerals. The obvious point is that the MX30 R EV still burns petrol. It is not unlikely that it could burn hydrogen by about 2035. Toyota taking an alternative approach is close to using a hydrogen fuel cell to generate the power needed to top up a small battery running an EV. So I am not sure that the bigger battery trend will endure. So back to this ID3 which is in an especially hotly contested price/performance sector, have VW made the right bets?

I have owned over 70 new VW's during my motoring lifetime and I certainly would not buy one of these. I was at Wolfsburg for the presentation of the original ID.3, in September2019. The Cupra Born is a far superior vehicle, and cheaper, if you can get one..........

VW easily win the award for the infotainment system with biggest bezzels in 2023. I also really don't like the tiny display behind the steering wheel, seriously what is the point?! It doesn't even blend that well with the dashboard, just sticks out... remove it totally (like in Model 3) & just use HUD or make it big enough. Don't want to sound like 'hater' but these things in the VW ID series really piss me off. Overall everything else in the interior & exterior is super!

Well, at least this is a step to the right direction. But still with better quality materials the interior looks somewhat ugly. The floating instrument cluster and infotainment screen just look like an afterthought. Slammed to the dash afterwards. In my opinion, our Touran interior simply looks better on the front seats.

Biggest flaws for the ID.3 are on software: no battery pre-heating, imprecise route planner and battery charge estimator, bad infotainment logics, bad responsiveness of the infotainment, no live info of charging station availability integrated in the main map, bad mobile app etc...
