2024 Acura TLX Type S review by The Straight Pipes. The Acura TLX Type S is putting down 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque from a 3L Turbo V6. At $64,250 CAD, would you take it over the Genesis G70, Kia Stinger, BMW M340i, Mercedes-AMG C43, Audi S4?

I was fortunate enough to pick one up when they were first introduced in 2021. The build quality far exceeded my expectations; I have yet to experience any squeaks or rattles at 25k miles. Ride comfort is supremely good, it's insulated in a way that makes the ELS sound system that much better, and in general, it's a fantastic GT car. However, switching to Sport+ mode gives me plenty of smiles whenever i find myself on a twisty backroad... and that V6 + active exhaust combo is music to my ears. 🎶

Car guys prefer actual performance cars, that were designed from the ground up, to be a performance car. I own this car in '23 model and agree it is underrated. Overall, it's a great daily driver with some fun, dynamic sports car feel! It is a little too heavy and it could use 50 more hp but as you all said, it is a "cool" car that is very well built, drives incredibly well and has one of the best suspensions in the class as well as one of the best stereos in any car! I love the look of the car and the fact that it is a Type S and I don't see many on the road like I do BMW's. There are cars that outperform it but I still really like the car for what it is and as a commuter on the highway, this car drives great! It is an excellent value for what you get with this car and if you can buy/lease at a good price, this is a very solid choice in the sport sedan segment!

Problem is they didn't fix the 4200Lb problem. When I was car shopping this time last year all the Acura dealers wanted 5-10k over MSRP for one. Being someone who actually was shopping those cars as well and still bought a type s, I could agree on pricing, especially the markup since it took me 3 weeks to find a gold type s at MSRP and I ended up driving 4 hours to pick it up. I disagree with the maitainance cost, if your taking your car for service from the dealer your essentially burning your money and thats not on the car, you can just as easily find a smaller or honda/acura shop to do the services for you, the reason its expensive is for the convenice of not thinking about it. Also insurance on the Audi and the M340i in NJ or NY is insane compared to the Acura so it offsets the cost quite a bit practically speaking plus average maitainance on both german cars are higher as well. TBH I wouldent hold your breath for reliability with the audi but i know the m340 is pretty relliable from what I heard but the M340 had the same markup problem too for a long time.

Been daily driving the 2021 Acura TLX A-Spec for a few months now and I actually love the infotainment system. My only issue has been very rare instances of CarPlay being slow and well, before the 2024 refresh, there was no Wireless Apple CarPlay or Wireless Android Auto. I plan on eventually trading in a year or two for the Type S (probably the 2024 refresh rather than the 2021). Wish the pre-2024 refresh A-Spec had the visual differentiation with the new exhaust system and the updated front feschas.

I've got a '22 A-Spec, and although I love driving it, I'm also considering the refreshed S (even though I'd surely take a big hit on trade-in). I'd like the dual personality of the suspension and exhaust settings (Comfort with my wife in the car, Sport+ when it's just myself), plus the extra tech updates like the 360 camera, faster infotainment processor, and improved safety sensor suite. The only new feature I'm not completely sold on is the new digital gauges, but I gotta admit that the red-on-silver in my A-Spec is hard to read clearly (and my wife hates it, tbh).

It’s not a rear bias system as was stated. They do a great job of directing torque to the rear wheels but it’s still a fwd primary system. The system itself will not reduce torque to the front wheels. When most manufacturers claim they can direct more than 50% torque to the secondary drive wheels, its theoretical meaning reduced traction at the primary drive wheels is a factor.
@RChero1010
@RChero1010 4 ай бұрын
It IS rear biased when you punch it. Your words are a little confused, maybe you mean it's still a fwd platform which is true. It really does a great job of handling in a fun way. Punch the gas and it drives out of the corner in a satisfying way. It can slightly overdrive the rear in certain conditions, it isn't just a "when the front slips" type of system.
@Koebot
@Koebot 4 ай бұрын
@@RChero1010Correct, it is rear biased when you punch it and the front wheels have experienced some degree of slip meaning torque loss. Overdriving the rear wheels does necessarily increase torque without considering traction. I understand that Acura’s system is always sending power to all four wheels to some degree and also incorporates torque vectoring for cornering. Perhaps I was being technical for the intentions of this video. I don’t believe my words are confusing if it’s understood exactly what torque is. Without going down that rabbit hole, I will agree that Acura has developed a very competent awd system.

Could you guys put up a poll to see how many people tune through radio stations, while driving. I don’t recall being in a vehicle with someone in recent history that scrolls through FM stations. I would think that one of the first things people do when they get a vehicle is set the station presets. I also don’t know many people that listen to FM. I’ve mostly seen people listening to playlists from their devices or some sort of streaming content. My last 7 vehicles have had volume, mute and preset controls on the steering wheel so I’ve never wanted for a volume knob. Maybe you guys could do two polls. Maybe you can have one poll to see if people tune through stations versus using presets and another to see if people use the controls on the infotainment or the wheel for volume. The exterior and interior of that car are really handsome. Thanks for the review 🤙

TLX Type S is just 3 seconds slower on track than a M340i and less than 1 second slower than the new Z (non-Nismo). It's not a killer on the streets, but is super comfortable to drive around in. Whatever your priorities are, buy the appropriate car. However, it's hard to beat the value of a G70/Stinger.

@@SlipAngleG70 sure, but the Type S is very strictly spec’d for the streets, and coming in at a lower MSRP than other vehicles to reflect that. I love my 2023 Type S, I got it in tiger eye pearl. I get complimented on it literally almost daily. It really wows people and I love it. It came down to this or an IS500 for me. Went with Type S cause the IS transmission is horrible and the interior kinda dated. Obviously the IS has arguably the holy grail engine for the segment, but in my area, it was almost 11K more and it didn't feel worth it IMO.

As someone that grew up with stick shifts, I always felt it was stupid that I have to select gear ratios. I know this is sacrilege to track racers but this is not a track car. There are already far too many distractions in modern driving so shifting doesn't need to be one of them. Also, stick shifting in heavy traffic is incredibly frustrating. I have an RDX with a 10 speed auto and its amazing. The electronic shifting also helps with a long lifespan for the transmission.

I test drove one before I bought my IS500 and my main takeaway was that it was criminally underpowered. It's the slowest car in its segment with a 103 trap and you can feel it once you're off the line. Sure it handles nice, but it feels heavy and it's slow from a roll. Nobody is going to track this or any of the other sports sedans so the "super awesome handling" is a bit wasted. This car needs at least 50 hp more if not more. It traps like a bolt on New Edge GT and you can tell that it does.

I was in the market for this and loved the Type S, but a couple of days ago I bought a loaded G70 instead. The Type S is rare enough that ADM still exists which pushes it very close to a mid spec'd M340i or IS500, both of which make the Type S a tough tough sell. Meanwhile I got a new, maxed out SP G70 for less than $50k USD, about $7-8k off sticker, and at that price I am very very happy! Man I love genesis as a brand and their cars but they depreciate so hard. I think it’s mostly due to their design change schedule. They make a design and it only last a bit before they already have a new one out and then yours become the outdated one. If you look at other luxury brands they change their styling so slow. They need to shift away from the Hyundai mentality of quick redesign to a more classy lasting design.

Other cons are it is wide and long (bad turning radius), fake engine noise in aggressive driving modes, and there’s some rattle in the sound system for some songs with bass up… Everything else is soooo good though, so good.
