A few years ago I was house hunting in the middle of winter. Had a 2019 Civic Type R with some winter tires on. As I was leaving an open house one of the realtors was out front in his truck and was spinning all over trying to pull away from the curb. He got out and was laughing. We talked a bit and I noticed he had some really bare all-season tire on. I said something like "Ah yeah maybe you need some winters" and he responded with "no that can't be it, it's all wheel drive." The AWD marketing you see on TV really works apparently. Good comparison and a great video, as usual from you! As much as I like small, zippy cars like the S3, long-term ownership costs (and depreciation) would steer me toward the Honda or Acura. Given the choice between those two, if priced closely, I would definitely choose the Type S, for all the reasons you pointed out. More features, more luxurious, and I think a better value proposition than the Type R. It also looks more special and rare to me, because there aren't a million Integras on the road already, like there are Civics. So the Type S will stand out a little more, which I like. In addition, for me personally, I'm not a fan of the Type R's seats, with its large bolsters and tight fit. I'm a big guy with short legs, and getting in and out of the Type R is difficult and potentially painful, given where those bottom bolters are placed. Plus, the Acura's seats would just be more comfortable for a daily driver and for trips.

@@clubracer6 but you want the weight on the wheels that are getting power to have traction on slippery roads. That’s why a FWD will always do better in the snow than a RWD (assuming equal tires). You two are the best in the biz. Thanks for another incredible video with fantastic content. I can tell you guys just love cars, and you especially love amazing driving dynamic and engagement which I admire in you. THANK YOU for acknowledging the reality of the market for these cars - so many automotive journalists rip on the Type S for having a $7K higher MSRP than the Type R. But that’s not what is happening for sale prices. I just bought a Type S for less than the average selling price of the Type R. I have a car problem and was dumb to sell a FK8 Type R in my past, but you guys nailed it - the Type R too hardcore for daily use (and too rough of a suspension that upsets the wife). After a month in my Type S, all I can say is Wow the Type S is incredible and truly has a different vibe from the Type R yet it leaves me missing nothing on the performance side.

Great video as usual and nice insights on each car. I appreciate your work and efforts! The Type R certainly has the dealer mark-ups as you state (5k-10k). However, I believe that the Type S also has them from what I have seen and this might push the entry price close to the 60k+ range. Thus, you must consider that "step-up" in price if one intends to buy the Type S. Also, I would guess that the Type R is for a younger buyer demographic than the Type S buyer who would tend to be older and not want the "racer" image that the car projects ....

Todd made a great point. These cars need to be a blend of track/weekend and daily driver. We want something fun that we can drive every day. If we are looking for a weekender/track car, bring in a used m2 comp or a 981 Cayman S to compare to. But if we are comparing daily hot hatches, let’s focus on the things that make a daily hot hatch great.

But if you’re sharing it with a spouse that doesn’t drive manual, then as good as the CTR and Type S are, the S3 just give you more of that dual personality. I’ve never really liked VWs manuals because they don’t feel very crisp and for me I wouldn’t drive a manual just for the sake of it, I’d drive it because it improves the experience and for me, even though I agree it doesn’t crack off shifts as fast as I’d want it, VWs dual clutch is so good that it doesn’t really take anything away for me.

My S3 is still under warranty for about a year and a half so I don’t want to jeopardize that by tuning it. Do you know if Audi can detect a DSG tune? I know they can definitely detect ECU tunes when the scan the car but don’t know if the DSG automatically flags it to.

The extra luxury touches of the Acura, 4yr/50,000 mile basic warranty, 6yr/70,000 mile powertrain, and +200,000 miles of reliability with only scheduled maintenance is top on my list.

Awesome comparison, always look forward to your videos! Love the Type S/R and what Honda is doing with them. Was car hunting recently for a commuter companion to my 6th gen ZL1. Had an allocation reserved for a Type S as soon as they came out, but ultimately could not convince the wife to drive a stick… We considered RS3 but ended up going BMW and ordering an m340ix after a couple test drives with both. Can definitely agree with the video (in my experience) that the quattro FWD biased AWD in the Audis doesn’t feel quite right and really leans towards understeering where as the xdrive systems with the RWD biased AWD in the BMWs felt much better with their tendency to lean more towards oversteer first. Plus how can you argue with the B58, it’s just a joke at this point lol

I am an Acura Ilx owner. Purchased it new in early 2021 for 34,000 Canadian. The new base Integra is 42,000 and is missing some features that are standard on my ilx. Given the increase in price and much higher interest rates, i can no longer afford an Acura. Having owned 3 Acura's over the past ten years, i am quite disappointed. If I want to stay with Honda and do not want to drive a manual, the next closest vehicle is the civic touring, which is down on power, torque and displacement. With current pricing and intrrest rates, the touring is still more then my ilx and i loose my dct. Hoping interest rates go down over the next 18 months.
