here is the thing: aborted starts are an extremely rare thing in F1. in F2 however, they are actually quite common. everytime someone stalls on the grid, it's an aborted start, and it's *always* an additional formation lap to clear the grid and get the stallers into the pits. so, if you are a driver who has only every experienced aborted starts followed by another formation lap, then it's easy to make that kind of habitual mistake.

​@@lmr4403 but you don't necessarily pay attention to the green light in that moment, not to forget that is has been years since Russell and Norris have actually seen an aborted start, and we don't know how often proper procedure in such cases is being discussed in the pre-race meetings. people make mistakes in such situations, and it's not like they got any advantage or put people in danger by starting another formation lap. you say there are "no excuses" when there clearly are mitigating circumstances, which is exactly why everyone got away with a reprimand and a symbolic fine.

I've just checked Stroll's onboard camera - I don't think he knows that his car has reverse gear. He just rolled down on neutral, put car in the gear and made a u-turn into the gravel. Since the gravel trap was behind him he was probably unaware of it because he still doesn't know that his car has mirrors.

Sorry, not the case. Lando was third, so even if Max had won, and he’d had the fastest lap he would have 26 points more and Lando 3 less. A total delta of 23 points. To have it over Max would have needed 24 points extra. So close, but not yet ;-)

Then again in all other races he never finished below p6 , Max needs 24 to claim the title with 3 races to go (p6 = 8 points). And then i don't count the coming sprintrace in Quatar. And that's even assuming Lando takes all 86 points left.. 3 x p1 = 75 points, 3 fastest laps + 3 points, 1 x p1 sprintrace + 8 points. 75+3+8=86 Max is 62 points ahead thus 24 is enough to be even. Max won more races then Lando = Max champion with equal points. Every point Lando scores below perfection now means Max needs less then 24 points. Lando needs 21 points over Max each race weekend to claim the title. No this is a done deal for Max no matter if he claims it the next race or the following one. Only something terrible can make Max missing the title, like 3 DNF's in a row. For example like getting very sick or worse crash and die would do it. But not even people that dislike Max with a passion would wish upon that scenario i would hope. As Lando's win would be hollow.

@MrV: the point wasn't RedBull getting kicked out by the red flag... The point was that they waited untill Lando ended HIS lap and was safe... It should not happen. A red flag needs to be thrown when it needs to be, not relative to someone finishing/not finishing his lap.

Where I live, quali broadcast started at 5:30am. I accidentally set my alarm for 5:30pm, and slept until 7:00am, only to tune in to see quali was somehow still ongoing and Q3 had zero Red Bull cars in it. I was so confused.

On wet tires - they were the best tires in Qualifying before Colapinto crashed, and in Canada both Haas cars started on the wets and were the fastest cars for about the first 5 laps, so they are not completely useless.

The problem is the window for them being useful is so narrow, so when you put them on either the race is about to be red flagged or the track is drying out so the inters will dominate them in a few laps time.

55:00 On german Sky they showed a clip from Lando's onboard where you can see a secondary set of lights (i guess these are there because the normal lights arent easily visible from pole/ first row) that do go out. The FIA also apparently was a bit slow with new information about the aborted start so i guess this was just part of the chaos this weekend. A 5k€ fine also seems pretty tame so I guess the conclusion was that noone knew what was going on but next time don't just drive of.

To solve the wet visibility issue maybe they can have the radar thing that they use to land planes in fog. GT cars in multi class endurance racing already have a digital rear view mirror with an overlay that shows where the approaching car is in the blur of white headlight glare at night, so maybe that could be adapted to be forward facing too?

With mud flaps, the track stays wet longer. In the Netherlands on the highways there is no spray because of open tarmac. This makes such a difference. When driving in germany in the rain i just am not used to the sprau any more

Unless you're designing something that sucks up water and chucks it on the side, spray is the best thing we got. In green flag conditions, F1 xwets and even inters dry up track faster than the sprinkling rain.
