Whilst it is an adorable car with good tech, I tend to lean into the idea that the value isn’t quite there, for the price. BYD Dolphin gets a similar range in the premium trim with a nice soft(ish) touch interior, good tech, blade battery. MG4 base is great size and good tech. Then for the $52000 you pay for this car, one could get the extended range Atto 3. Or even MG4 Essence 64.

I’d have to agree with you … this segment of the market is very price sensitive and there are some attractive offerings from China currently 👍

COMMENTS AFTER 2,5 YEARS DRIVING in South-France: I have a FIAT 500e 3+1 2021. Model 3+1 has an narrow extra door on the passenger side (right side in Europe). It is a wonderful shopping bag and very good BEV for local driving. If the price in your area is OK for you, I can recommend Fiat 500e. Fiat software is very good and it works reasonably fast. Rear seats are only for small people. I am an old slim man under 165 cm. I can travel in the rear of my car. It is not good for anybody bigger than I am. Freeways: An EV will show you how much more energy you are using on freeways, so you soon start to avoid fast driving. An ICE vehicle does the same, but it doesn’t show you the difference like an EV does. LANE CONTROL: I drive mostly on small roads with 80 km/h speed limit. Lane control is active every time I start the car. I have to disengage it every time, but is is very easy. Double click of the left stick (in Europe, lights), behind the steering wheel. Using lane control is dangerous on small roads if you have chosen the setting “High”. In my car it can’t be permanently dis-activated. ONE PEDAL DRIVING: I use only mode “Range” = one pedal driving. When you stop pushing the accelerator, car brakes and sends energy back to battery. When I need faster braking, I use the brake pedal. The rolling mode “Normal” is totally unnecessary for me.

The car seems OK, I'm just not understanding why they are bringing it to the USA in a few months at ~$33k usd. It likely wont qualify for the tax credits, has an abysmal range for most US clients, who we already know don't like the small 500 car, and it is being release right as the US is experiencing a massive downturn in EV sales. Its like the perfect storm to completely destroy this cars sales. I just don't see the new EV 500 selling at all in the US market.

in the states....the range is a little shy of idea for a lot of people...btw, I live in Texas...things are spread out a bit here...there seems to be a 200-250 mile range that seems comfortable for a lot of people....less gets dicey here.

Being a Fiat 500e was disappointed it didn't make it as a hot hatch as that would definitely make it a worthwhile proposition whether the Abarth version can pull it off is another thing. Yes it is small probably best for a single or couple with maybe a pet at most for daily driving. I'm looking forward to your Dolphin review once BYD get you a press car to test, hoping it's the mid-spec version although entry level would be interesting as comparison.

Nice little car but pricey for AU vs the EU (not unusual for us I guess. Was most surprised to learn it was NMC battery; very unusual for a short range car. That certainly makes the BYD blade a no brainer.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 ай бұрын
Agreed I’m unlikely to buy another NMC car given the advantages of LFP ie longevity charging to 100%, greater voltage stability and better fire safety profile

We've owned this car for a few weeks now and also owned a Tesla for 3 1/2 years.. One pedal driving is only uncomfortable for passengers if you are not driving properly. You control rate of acceleration and deceleration at all times. Some people have this misguided idea they have to take their foot completely off the accelerator to maximise regen and then it becomes nauseating. Fiat transition from regen to braking when coming to a stop or on hills is not very sophisticated and can be jerky and noisy. Can be mitigated somewhat with practice but still poor. Fiat claims 0-100 in 9s but most people see it in 8s. Car feels quite punchy to me. I don't like the fact you can't set a charging limit so it will go to 100% unless you manually intervene. Fiat reckon it's ok to charge to 100% every time but being an NMC battery, I beg to differ. Worst of all the car app available in the UK and other markets is not available yet in Australia and Fiat is saying it will not come for a year or maybe early 2025. There is no way to remotely monitor charging or use the myriad of other features an app can provide. How hard can it be to adapt an existing app for another location? Ridiculous! We are pretty happy overall but the price is way too high! Only buy this car if you are a fan of small city cars with a lot of retro character and style, otherwise look at the cheaper Chinese offerings or stretch just a little bit more for a Tesla and get tech and specs in a whole other league. Way more bang for buck to be had.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 ай бұрын
Good summary 👍 I’ve owned a Tesla for almost 8 years and I’ve driven/reviewed other one-pedal cars including Polestar 2 so I’d argue that I’m fairly well practised with regen braking 😁 but by far the Fiat is the hardest to control/master range/regen mode for ride comfort! I guess with further practice it will improve Agreed, it’s frustrating that you can’t limit charging nor have access to an app currently in Australia 🤦 Glad you’re enjoying the car 👍😀

Given that this EV, at $55k DRIVE AWAY, is ridiculously overpriced, are you still happy with your purchase? Sure, it’s a great, compact city EV, absolutely cute as button, with reasonable performance and range, but $55k ??? For that amount of money one could easily purchase a 1-2 yr old Tesla model 3, with way better specs and value for money, in every department. This EV should be selling in Australia for around $40-45k, drive away, although I do understand the reality of it’s high price being (mostly) out of control of the the local Australian distributors. I guess what this shows is that many EVs still have a long way to go in becoming genuinely affordable.

@@Nicholas.T I said much of what you just said in my comment. In the current fledgling EV market I'd estimate this car should be ~$42k plus on -roads and this factors in a fairly generous allowance for the chic italian-made cache that it arguably deserves. Unfortunately (partly due to our lack of emissions standards) we are stuffed for choice when it comes to proper small city cars. About the only sub 4m long city car competition is the Mini e which was selling for over $70k and is currently being run out at $60k to make way for the new ground-up EV model. We would have loved an electric Smart ForTwo (to replace our petrol one) but it is one of the many not being sold here. We would have loved one of the cheaper lower spec 500es sold in other markets, but again not available here. We love the car but not the price. At least we get a $3500 State gov rebate. As I said, you would only buy this car if you have to have a small stylish city car, otherwise if you like bigger cars go Chinese or Tesla for far better bang for buck. BTW this model Fiat sells for the equivalent of $63k plus on-roads in the UK and they have been selling reasonably well. I think Stellantis are deliberately pricing their vehicles uncompetitively because they don't really want to sell many EVs and would rather slow down the transition away from ICE cars. In the UK their upcoming Fiat 600e (sort of a 4 door version of the 500) starts from $63k and the Jeep Avenger (toy crossover SUV) starts from $68k.

@@LudicrousFeed Fiat regen is very good up until you just before you come to a stop. This is when the brakes are kicking in. I would bet it's just a software/control issue. It's not a deal-breaker, certainly better than not having one-pedal driving like some EVs, but it could be much better. Tesla regen stopping is perfect. It even eases the brakes at the last second to avoid recoiling back of the suspension.

But at a $55k, drive away price, it’s SERIOUSLY OVERPRICED, don’t you think Stan ??? Considering what a tiny car it is ?? You can buy the (virtually identical) petrol version at almost HALF THE PRICE !! With it’s reasonable performance with amazing petrol economy!! And you can put that saving of $25k on the purchase price , and invest it in whatever (shares/cash) and get a return of 5-7% annually… And use that 5-7% income to pay for all your petrol and servicing costs, and lose way less in depreciation!! The petrol version MAKES WAY MORE sense financially, with the same “city car” practically!!
