I don't understand why people are upset. Magnus knows the rules of the event, has been complying with them for a while, like other players, and today chose to violate them (let's say by accident). He was given the opportunity to fix it, which was also given to Ian as well. Ian fixed his dress to the code, while Magnus didn't intentionally. And so, accordingly to the rules, he was unpaired. I am sorry. Being the best player doesn't give you the right to not comply with the rules. If you have something against the rules, as I understand, you can appeal to the Athlete commission and get it fixed based on the player feedback. Every sport has some archaic rules that need to be fixed, and you have a forum to get that fixed by. Why don't you take that route then Magnus? Why the unnecessary drama? Cricket had rules that once the umpire gives you out (even if he's wrong), you walk out. As technology evolved, the game now uses Appeal to the third umpire (who uses cameras) and figures out if you are out or not, even if the umpire tells that you are out. (This is not an archaic rule, but I am putting it here for illustration purpose) Since Magnus is the GOAT of chess, I am expecting him to set an example of proper behavior to the newer players and how to get the rules fixed in a healthy way instead of these degenerate acts that lead nowhere.

I just came to know in this event, that they have a Magnus on board 1 even if he is last - rule. Which is so ridiculous, and great insult to all the other players, dont know why anyone hasnt spoken against that. I agree with your point. You cant have anyone above the game. If so many players over 100 can accept the rules and comply with the organizer why can't magnus? I am sure u can't play many sports without the official jersey or individual games like golf also requires certain attire. He was given the opportunity to correct it too and he was not willing to do that, then its his choice. Why are many in the comments section angry with the organizers. He is the best player but same rules apply for all players why do others have to comply while he needs special concession. If the organizer allowed magnus to do what he likes then its not fair for the rest of the players.

@thewakakeboarder if all the players feel the same about the fashion choice they could together appeal to the committee that oversees it. But I don't think one player should be treated with favour above everyone else for his choice which is not in compliance with the rules he was aware of during a tournament, if someone is breaching the rules be it clothes or otherwise they face the consequences. It's only fair that all are treated the same giving exception because magnus is the best is not fair to the rest of the players. A player like messi can not go on the field and demand he doesn't like his jersey and wants to wear his own comfortable one. It's how professional sports work. When players feel they don't like the rules they go to file for change with huge numbers and go through proper channel.

They enforced the dress code and magnus, wearing jeans, dropped out, as a matter of principle he said. Presumably the principle is that he’s above the rules he agreed to. He also said in an interview “F you.” People are mad because they’re wannabe bootlickers and their expression of solidarity is a delusional mechanism for elevating themselves to the level of their childish hero.
