I was a Tacoma guy but with their pricing, they lost me. I just bought a 2024 Canyon Elevation and I freaking love it. The ride is amazing and I have all the features that the Tacoma came with for $12,000 less. There is nothing cheap about the new Canyon.

Does it have a real spare tire, same as the other 4? The new 2024 Tacoma has a convenience tire mounted on a rim not for long time use and the tread is different than the other four. The GMC is interesting but is their storage both below and in back of the rear seats.

There is so much going for the Canyon and I would choose the Elevation 4WD (equipped similarly to this truck). Looks amazing. Among the best in the segment for towing and payload. Thanks Ben for always giving payload numbers. Powerful. We tow a small trailer and haul camping gear. My only issue is GM reliability. Probably a deal breaker for me.

I test drove this, Colorado and Tacoma. Liked all 3 but I chose the Tacoma TRD OR. I tend to keep my vehicles 15 plus years and have the most confidence the Tacoma will last. I still have my 2004 Tahoe with 220 k miles and love it so it wasn’t an easy choice.

Potentially at camp or night when you don't want the truck to turn on the headlights every time you might open the door or something. But I'd need to experiment with the actual behavior of stuff to know if this is a real issue or not. Otherwise I've personally been happy with the auto headlights in most everything I've driven with them.

Yup got a loaded frontier pro-x after driving the canyon. You get way more bang for $ and you get a tried and true V6 which felt better than the canyon. Transmission was smoother and no turbo lag.

Ben, you totally missed the fact that the Tacoma has no rear seat AC vents. Neither dies the ford ranger. GM trucks are the only mid sizers with rear air vents

​@rsaunders223 I can't seem to find a reason that midsized trucks even exist now, they have weak engines that demand a lot of turbo horsepower from 4 cylinders, and for the most part they cost 70-85% as much as full size, but the full sizes are like 3x stronger and capable than the middos and last longer for a teensy bit more price

The Canyon Elevation is great and was interested in one (4x4) but apparently the only way to get 4LOW is for you to step up to the Canyon AT4. Elevation is only 2HI/4HI/AUTO4WD. Chevy does the same thing in the Colorado W/T and LT. I know its a 2WD under review but $43k for no front wheel assist? I will pass. Great review and agreed, the Tacoma is NOT as good as this.

As a previous 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma owner I would buy a Canyon AT4/Colorado Trail Boss over the 4th gen Tacoma. With that said I got rid of my 3rd gen because the drivetrain was a mess to say the least, the combo of the sluggish transmission and weak engine. With that said i traded it in back in 2018 for an F150 Crew Cab Sport (2.7 Ecoboost) and have been very happy. Another year or two and hopefully a better automotive market I will entertain a Canyon for sure.

I test drove the canyon then the Nissan frontier pro-x which is the only midsize left with a NA V6. I went with frontier. It will outlast any turbo 4 cylinder.

GM did their damage to me in the past with pushing stupid junk and plastic interiors. But, the rattling glovebox and nerfed HP and torque? What about the fact that the engine on the Tacoma looks like something out of a Frankenstein movie. At 50k, I want as close to perfect for me as I can get.

Have a black elevation just like this on order. I'm normally a Toyota fanboy with a 2017 Tacoma with 135k miles (Texas built) and a 2015 4Runner with 187k miles so this is a leap of faith for me. Time will tell, but man it's a good looking truck.

I bought a new Tacoma in 2012 and had several issues and three recalls. Everything was fixed under warranty except the rear passenger side window motor caught on fire while we were driving down the road. Toyota took my truck and had it for a month, and when I finally got it back, they said it was our fault .Toyota accused us of spilling water or something on the main drivers door control, which never happened. I will never buy another Toyota again after being accused of their faulty product.

The Tacoma engine and transmission combo has been sold world wide in other Lexus and Toyota models before being brought to the US and has had few issues. Maybe the turbo will be a problem, but there hasn't been much evidence yet. I'm not saying that there won't be any issues, but Toyota does have one of the best reliability track records.

It's a nice truck and all just don't like the fact of how they switched the lights to the infotainment system. A good rule of thumb is; keep it simple stupid. Not that I'm calling other people stupid but the fact of matter is is that not everyone is tech savvy. Also listen to the customers and feed off their negative feed back.

I have zero faith in the reliability of GM pickups (they haven't been reliable in years), so I'd buy the Tacoma given the choice even if it's more expensive, as it'll last 250K miles. The Canyon? Who knows, but GM hasn't had a good track record with turbocharged engines over the last few years.

Looks are subjective. I personally think the new Tacoma looks the best in its class. Especially when it’s fully-loaded. Who incorporates light controls into the infotainment system? The most asinine thing I have ever seen in a vehicle build. Engine sound is subpar and it’s a 2WD for $44k. Toyotas are going to sell no problem compared to these.

Interior and exterior are so much better than the new Tacoma, not even a comparison. I'll say though, the Elevation in 4WD is not that great of a deal, because it has a single speed transfer case. One would have to step up to the AT4 to get low range, which would then be more comparable to a Tacoma in off-road capability. I think a 45k Tacoma TRD OR is actually a better value than the GM trucks, considering you get a coil sprung rear, 2-speed tcase, and the selectable rear locking differential. You have to spend significantly more money on the GM trucks to get that.
