As a kid I use to love building these wooden models. I think here in the UK it was called Kiel-Kraft, but it was like building a mini real aircraft...

I actually have a Keil Kraft kit on the shelf waiting to be built. I'm looking forward to starting it this winter. Stay tuned!

G'day to you, thanks for bringing back so many great times with my Dad in the 50/60s we would build one quite often, Kiel - Kraft if I remember rightly, that was 60odd years ago back in the UK. Armadale West Aust.

I use to build a lot of these when I was a kid, it was a great hobby, but now days more into the plastic. I would recommend it to anyone though!

In the UK, we used to have a very similar kit range named Keil-Kraft. The Guillows model is a really nice, simple kit and you built it to perfection.

Very nicely done. That line of kits was what I started with. That and the Comet Struct-O-Speed. Those were balsa sheet and never looked like the box art. Long before I got my first Peck kit.

Haha-- you're right about the struct-o-speed. I built one recently and it flew like a brick. Thanks for your comment!

Last flight was a white knuckle ride. Great looking build. Best to leave the cg and stab alone once the glide is sorted. That looks like a 5 inch prop. Guillow’s are unusual in that their D5 and D6 props have high pitch. You’ll need a bigger flying field for that ship. Keep em flying!
@kitchentablebalsabuildsАй бұрын
Thanks--it was a nail-biter! When the first few flights were not climbing, I added the stab shim. Turns out it probably didn't need it. It just needed more power. Thanks for your observations!

Great build and flight. I just posted my build and flight on the Facebook page. Like you, I built mine out of the box with no modifications to make her lighter. I did make a removable nose block and actually used the kit tissue. I only had one day to fly her and it was windy but I did make the 20 sec. Hopefully when I get back home I will trim her out and try to get more flights in. She is a good flyer off the building board.

@edsherrod521627 күн бұрын
Nice job! The porpoising on the last flight made me think that maybe you had too much weight in the rear of the plane? But you really did a great job! Getting that plane to fly 40 seconds is great!
@kitchentablebalsabuilds26 күн бұрын
Thanks! That was a crazy 40 seconds--it took a couple years off my life. It did seem to porpoise more as it ran out of power. It flew better without the shim under the stabilizer.

Adding the spinner at the end of your video helps to give it more of a Typhoon look. I've often looked at this kit and wondered what it would take to give it more scale appearance without sacrificing flyability.
@kitchentablebalsabuilds27 күн бұрын
I agree, the spinner adds a lot to help the profile. I've built two other kits from this series and they are also somewhat boxy looking. I think the appearance could be improved if you replaced the one piece fuselage sides with rounded formers and longitudinal stringer construction. Weight-wise, that could be a zero-sum game. Thanks for your comment!

I built the Typhoon model about 50 years ago after building many Airfix and Monogram kits. I took it out in the yard and wound up the propellor. A kid came by and held the model while I wound it up. I let it go and it smashed into the side of the garage and that was the end of my flying balsa model career.
@kitchentablebalsabuilds18 күн бұрын
Sounds familiar. That's about when I gave up flying balsa models, too. I picked the hobby up again last year and was surprised to find I could actually get one to work! Thanks for watching!

@lawrencelewis259217 күн бұрын
@@billkraemer4710 My father was building balsa kits since the 1930s, mostly as control line. His actually flew, unlike mine. I remember he would order plans from the back of a magazine and then buy the wood and carve every bit of it. he used up X-acto knife blades by the truckload.

The last time i did a guillows was sometime in the 90s. I did the birddog, and then the ME109 as a micro RC plane, that i never flew but i did airbrush it to very realistic levels... I have also built the dr1 triplane... built it way too heavy, and spray painted it red. Then i started my own design if a guillows style x Xf-85 Goblin to use a 1st gen small electric duccted fan... 30-35mm i think... and i never went farther than the finished frame.

I built one about 50 years ago. It sure flies well without the landing gear, I built it with landing gear and it still flew quite well; is it ok by the challenge rules to leave the landing gear off? It sure flies better without it or the spinner. The spinner was a pain to get right...
@kitchentablebalsabuildsАй бұрын
I'm seeing a few builders participating in the challenge leave off the landing gear and the spinner for their flights. I believe that's acceptable, but Doyle Blevin would be the person to confirm that. His KZbin link is in my description above. Thanks for your question!
@DLLReidАй бұрын
The central portion of the prop covered by the spinner doesn't provide thrust it simply adds structural integrity. Putting the spinner on should improve flight performance as it cleans up the airflow and reduces parasitic drag. YMMV.

what di you paint the tissue with?
@kitchentablebalsabuilds26 күн бұрын
I wanted to keep it as light as possible, so I didn't use any paint. But, I did seal the tissue with a light coat of Krylon clear satin spray. Thanks for your question!
@stephengould938525 күн бұрын
@@kitchentablebalsabuilds -Every time I use Krylon clear I end up wriggling the tissue -- May I ask how do you apply it -- your tissue is still very tight.
@kitchentablebalsabuilds23 күн бұрын
@@stephengould9385 I tighten the paper with a light mist of water before I seal it with Krylon. After the water dries, if an area doesn't become tight enough the first time, I may respray a water mist. If its still not tight, I remove that section of paper and recover it. I found the key to using Krylon sealer is to not saturate the paper. Hope this helps!
