It will sell like hotcakes, Aussies are very quick to jump over each over to save 8 cents, if GWM can prove good "uptime" (not off the road awaiting parts/service/reliability) fleets get on to this model and can run through the warranty period and dump them, then Toyota should be concerned. The full review will be good, running through the tech/drive modes, if it gets down a rough dirt road with a bit of articulation but makes it to the destination, then look out, Kia/Hyundai also started with cheap, value for money and now Aussies are happy to pay top dollar for one. China is a bit smarter by forcing relationships with automotive partners in China to speed the process of knowledge and knowhow for their own brands, like GWM.

I will have my say as a Chinese. If I am not wrong, this Tank 500 is not rival to LC prado, but the competitor to the LC300. In China, the 3.0T 9AT gasoline version of this SUV is commonly compared to the LC. Well the Australian version is indeed a 2.0T machine version mated with a 9HAT gear and a 78kW electric motor. (Something similar to the Tank 500 Hi-4T in China, but the Hi-4T is a PHEV and this is just a HEV that can’t be charged externally.) The overall quality of this car, especially about the Ultra 72k version, is at least the same level of the LC300 VX Segment sold at 130k. This (WEY) Tank 500 is, comparably, the high-end brand of GWM, and represent the best possible off-roader this 40 Years old (1984-) Chinese car company can make at this price level.

I saw one today passing by the dealership in Quito, Ecuador. I am curious. Here this one is priced at around 56K USD (the entry level version). Compared to the 190K USD you have to pay for a Land Cruiser 300, I would say a lot of people like me would give it a shot. Mostly because I do not have 190K USD to spend in a car. I know it does not have the same engine and pedigree, but for the occasional trip and daily commute to work is probably fine.

We did take it off-road - but the weather conspired against us and couldn't film it. This is from Bruce, the presenter, in his written review (www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/gwm-tank-500-2024-review-145237/) ------------------ "Sadly, our off-road drive of the 2024 GWM Tank 500 was curtailed by monsoonal rain that burst just as we were about to engage low-range. It was a case of better safe than bogged! "However, we were in the situation during the day’s driving to witness the Tank 500 negotiating some proper technical tough off-road sections and it did so without getting beached or ripping its guts out. "The capabilities are backed up by off-road info in the screen that includes tyre pressure monitoring, compass, pitch and roll, atmospheric pressures and see-through cameras so you can assess what you are clambering over. "Given what we saw and the specification, the signs are very good for the Tank 500 as a true off-roader capable of competing with the Prado, Everest and Co. "Like the fuel consumption though, a proper verdict is TBA."

For the naysayers who think the Chinese wont eventually get a sizable portion of the car market, get your head out of the sand. The Japanese were seen as knockoffs, they eventually put plenty of European carnakers out of business or on life support. The Koreans? Same thing. Now it the Chinese turn. People will question their build quality and longevity, which is fine. The same question were asked of the Japanese and Korean cars. The formula they are using is tried and proven, give the consumers a quality product and a reasonable price. I dont expect this car to knock a Landcruiser off its perch, but a Tank 500 owner wont likely look at its interior and feel shafted
