We just received our first 2024 Kona Electric. I talk features, size and what's new. **NOTE: As of Nov 8th, 2023, Hyundai has REMOVED the V2L feature. At least from Canadian models! Please check the included features with your dealer. If the removed V2L feature is a dealbreaker, it is still included on the Kia Niro Platinum+ model, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq models. **
0 to 60 mph is 8.1 seconds.
80 to 120 KM/H (50 to 75 mph) takes 4.8 seconds. This is slower than before and about the same as an Acura RDX turbo. This gives an idea of what passing another vehicle is like.

Really nice, helpful review! I really like your calm, clear, concise delivery. Some reviewers go overboard being too dramatic or cute and it's just annoying, similar to the BS a lot of salesman speak. I really appreciate that you give your useful technical, mechanic's insights. Very good information no salesman and no other YT review I've seen mention. When recommending the SEL trim over the Ultimate, it would've been helpful if you would've also pointed out some of the major features you would lose when stepping down to the SEL.

Love my ‘22 Kona that I got this year. Glad to see the trunk got bigger (my only thumbs down on mine) and that the frunk was added for the cables. It really is a great little vehicle! Good price and great warranties.

One of the best "mechanical specs" review I've seen so far. Thank you for talking about more than just "how it rides". Very seriously considering this EV when my current 2022 Kona Limited lease ends this fall.

We still love our 2019 Kona EV. As a technician, these differences matter to me! The motor and reducer are no longer separated, and they are cooled with transmission fluid now, which is a good upgrade. 😀 I tried to provide a realistic range because they give you a sense of more range with this Kona, but it likely will be the same or less in the real world. Thanks for your comments!

The same as before! They changed the marketing to show 10-80% at 43 minutes. The older model was 0-80% at 47 minutes. So no change in charging speed sadly. Thanks again! Always happy to read your comments!

Jeremy, I sure wish that the salespeople had a tiny fraction of the knowledge that you have as a technician because most of them will tell you whatever it takes to make the sale and since you can’t take the vehicle back if you feel that you were lied to, you are stuck. I didn’t know about the A or B type heat pump and a salesperson could tell you anything to make the sale at that emotional moment and you still have to survive the finance manager who’s going to convince you to buy an extended warranty because they’ll lie to you about what and for how long the factory warranty is. They won’t find your warranty booklet that would prove them wrong until after the deal is signed. I’m so sorry about this rant, I’m almost 65 and have purchased several new cars and have heard it all! We purchased a Tesla Model 3 in August 2018 and we had none of any of those things done to us because it is a 100% touch-less process and it’s so refreshing. I am not going to say that their cars are the best because Hyundai and Kia products are fantastic and there are many others as well, but a no hassle experience is amazing. Please, I am not a Tesla fanboy, but I love the purchasing experience!

Wow, you raise some interesting points. Ironically enough, we own both a Hyundai EV and a Tesla EV and I've said many of the same things. The Hyundai has better build quality hands down. As for the heat pump, if you get the long range Ariya it's not an issue because the battery is so large. It's the base model that suffers more. Usually our salespeople come out to the shop to talk with me about EVs and ask lots of questions. It's one of the few places who don't try to scare people away from EVs and they seek out information they don't have. Thanks for your comments!

It sounds like you have a great dealership! I am in the USA and I live too far away to buy a car across the border. I don’t think that it’s legal anyway unless the car is much older.

I hear that quite a few dealers randomly received a shipment. One dealer in Toronto has 3 if I'm not mistaken. Hyundai is funny that way, they'll still have an embargo on for a vehicle but then their dealers will get the new car before the press can release the news!

Can you confirm the Canadian Ultimate model has V2L capabilities? Do I just buy the adapter at Hyundai? There is nothing in the manual about it.
@livewirereview
@livewirereview 3 ай бұрын
I can confirm that the Canadian Ultimate and all other versions at this time DO NOT have V2L. I have an adapter and tried it myself. They removed the feature one month before the first deliveries despite advertising it for a full year beforehand.

Here in the USA, apparently the 2024 premium trim ("Limited") has V2L, but the lower trims (I have the "SEL") do not have V2L
@livewirereview
@livewirereview 3 ай бұрын
@BenDiscoe Check that it actually does. We received a press release on Nov 8/2023 that V2L, rear vents, and one other that I have forgotten were removed. When the vehicle landed here, I bought the V2L adapter, and it did not work. It did work on the Ioniq 6, though.

Does the 2024 Kona EV in SEL trim have a heat pump? I’ve seen conflicting information online. Also, it may be a USA thing, but the LED bar on the front of my 2024 Kona EV only lights up at the ends, unlike Konas in other parts of the world which light up fully. Do you know anything about that?
@livewirereview
@livewirereview 4 ай бұрын
I will have to dig into the heat pump. In the past, the US market would offer the lowest trim without a heat pump. I just finished the training on this car, and there is no mention of that in the lowest model. If you look under the hood and see A/C lines going to 2 different areas of the dashboard, then it has a heat pump. As for the lights on the front, during the day, only the outside edges light up for DRL. It's only at night with the headlights on that the whole LED strip lights all the way across.
@campyonlyguy

Thank you ! I will look for that.

@@livewirereview Well, maybe a USA thing, but I checked and confirmed that the LED bar on my Kona only lights up at the ends, regardless of whether the DRL or headlights are on. I'm still trying to track this down, since it just looks wrong to have most of the bar sitting there "dead" without lighting up.
@livewirereview
@livewirereview 3 ай бұрын
@campyonlyguy I have checked a few Konas since you mentioned this. The lower trims only light up the outside bars. If you have an N-line or ultimate package, the whole bar lights up at night. I confirmed on both today and a base model last week.
@campyonlyguy
@campyonlyguy 3 ай бұрын
@@livewirereview Thank you for following up. That confirms what I saw when looking around on Reddit. I wonder if there's a way to make the entire light bar illuminate on the SEL version? It would be great if there was something as simple as plugging in the bar!

range is fine but battery degradation is something everyone needs to talk about. I have a 2023 and it started at 314 miles per charge, 2 years later, it's 239. WTF man.
@livewirereview
@livewirereview 4 ай бұрын
The guess o meter on Hyundai vehicles is based on the efficiency of the last 20 drive cycles. It doesn’t show degradation at all. To get the claimed range in this car you need to have an efficiency of 15.4kwh/100km or 4.04mi/kwh. Since this battery is not actually 64.8kwh (something around 68kwh) the degradation is hidden for quite some time. Next time you service at your local dealer, you can get a SOH (state of health) check. It'll likely still be around 96 to 100% depending on charging habits. Tips for better range: use preheating while plugged in, choose EV tires when you have to change them, get an alignment around 24000km (suspension sags at this time), use AUTO in climate and set to 22 or less. The Auto setting uses a humidity sensor on the windshield and makes better use of the heat pump. Highway speeds will never be great as the cod is too high at 0.29. Our model is a better highway car in our experience because of the 0.23 to 0.24 cod. Let me know if there's anything else you want to know or were curious about. I try to give the most accurate range figures I can that are more realistic than advertised.
@livewirereview
@livewirereview 4 ай бұрын
239 is 384km. Seems correct from my experience. Official figures were 388 winter and 415 summer. Real figures are about 300 to 320km winter and up to 484km in the summer. So your car seems to be in good health! Thanks for the comments!

That is as ugly as a Ssangyong. I can't believe the company which makes the Ionic 6, Ionic 5 and older i40 would make a car looking like that. I actually thought your youtube thumbnail was a doctored image as a joke, with an empty car body sitting on top of another car. Surely its looks will turn off many buyers.

Honestly there are a lot of people who are not going to like the looks. My biggest turn off is the light strip in the front has 2 lines during the day and it looks terrible. At night is better because the whole strip lights up. I'm actually one where the Ioniq 5 is still growing on me. I was never into the boxy pixels myself. But I would buy an Ioniq 5 N in a heartbeat.
