Many tennis fans talk about the JCF Carlos coaching but JCF has been there when Carlos has lost big tournaments such as Cincy, USO, the Asian swing etc. JCF has also NOT been there when Carlos has won such as Queens, Miami, etc. 🤷‍♂️

Juan Carlos was there at all the majors. He was not there at Rio last year, Queens last season and was absent from Miami for a week but got back for the final. He was there at all the other M 1000s and Grand slams.

Alcaraz has captured the hearts of us Fed fans, and I think Rafa's too. He's Fed and Rafa rolled into one and us fan's thank the Tennis gods for working overtime to deliver a talent like this just in time. But you know what, it's his dazzling smile that is so uplifting, and conveys such joy that I love the most about him. I've never seen a player SMILE so often no matter how high the stakes are, and it just uplifts everyone. Case in point the incredible pass against Medvedev ! I hope Med can find a way to add dimension and power to his game so that we can have a new big 3 instead of just a big 2. As it stands, the momentum is shifting away from Med, especially WRT Sinner.

I heard what ferrero told Carlos during Sinner match cause on TV in Spain they let us listen it...and I can tell you that Ferrero tells things to him but some minor details that definitely they not gonna make carlos win...at the end is 99% Carlos judgment, I think is most the presence of Ferrero that gives carlos confidence....not forget that Ferrero was in lot of matches with Carlos that he did lost.

💯 Ferrero is coaching 20 year old Carlos about decision making off the court and Carlos is doing the work. This has been reported by Spanish press. This is why ALL players have coaches.

Being fair to Carlos, everyone brings up that Zverev loss because he legitimately did look tactically lost. But the guy was panicking. His game was completely off. He was more worried about making forehands and backhands into the court than he was about tactically adjusting. I’m sure he knew what he had to do and had a game plan, but when you’re just spraying errors all over the place, there’s not much room in your head for tactics.

Would you consider doing separate analysis of Świątek's game? Seems to me like every channel is brushing of her wins, saying one sentence like "she's so good, she's solid, good movement" and then moving on to e.g. 10 min analysis of Sakkari and others... I'd love to know why exactly is she winning (and loosing sometimes noone analyses her mistakes either) especially when many people in the comments say her games ugly or insufficient, she just gets easy draws...

I disagree with the joker conversation. You guys are giving him more grace than he should. These “lapses” has been happening more and more. He is one of the greatest of all time so why does he act like this every 2-3 months. To say Roger and Nadal didn’t have outburst every 2-3 months at the end of their careers is correct. Prime example Ben Shelton and joker us open last year. He mimicked Ben celebration. But joker was Ben when he first started. I wish he was more of a guide for players like himself but he doesn’t see himself in that light

Iga doesn't have anything that makes me want to watch her match.... her play and her personality she still has an air of a good junior, someone else's daughter from another team I didn't come to cheer for. But she's too well behaved and good natured to cheer against. Yeah she's great...yawn yawn Djokovic....... after all these years, you'd think that he would know how to act graciously at the net on that day. (Especially when he was sooo wrong.) But I guess that's his tenacity.

Yeah, Djokovic was undeniably way too salty with Nardi. He was mad because it was break point, Nardi stopped playing, and Djokovic hits a drop shot thinking he has the point 100% won. Instead, Nardi runs up and hits a passing shot. Had Nardi not gotten to the drop shot, Djokovic wouldn’t have cared, but because he did, Djokovic got mad at the umpire. Nardi made an honest mistake. It was not a way to mislead Djokovic, he just genuinely thought the serve was out. And he said he idolized Djokovic as a child and still has a poster of him on the wall. I hope Djokovic did reach out and apologize later.

here’s another take on the rule, allowing players to talk to coaches during the match: The rule gives it advantage to players who could afford to hire good coaches. This is definitely an advantage for the higher ranking players I preferred the rule that minimized getting information from coaches During a match. -Toby

Three great coaching solutions: Sakkari is a different player with David Witt. She might finally win a major. Lehecka and Byrdich is revolutionary. Mouratoglou is Rune's coach. They'll have fun and occasionally it will be a shitshow. Annika being exiled was also necessary. Shelton and Jabeur need to bring in a former top player for advice. McEnroe, a left-hander, is the obvious choice for Ben the way Cahill compliments Simone for Jannik. Ons needs Navratilova.

You & John make mention of Alcaraz’s lapses in Australia when JC wasn’t able to be there. I think it was highly notable, as well. John even went so far as to use the term “clueless.” Again, pretty accurate. And yes, coaching is now allowed. I wonder your thoughts, Andy and John, how much of a crutch you feel legal coaching is. The true greats didn’t have that- obviously I’m looking at Venus & Serena, who at times barely spared so much as a glance at the box, Rafa (same), Roger, Kim C, and many others- obviously due to the times. But it also makes for an even stronger mental grip on the game when you have to figure it out for yourself. So I also wonder your thoughts on how much is lost for having someone give you all the answers on the test vs. the reward for figuring it out for yourself.

The USO default, er well apparantly this lineswoman had given him a "bad" call at sum point. When you see him from a viewpoint looking towards the back of the court he hit that ball right in her direction, WHILE HE WAS LOOKING at her. Not saying he was eyeballing her, but his head was right there aligned with where he hit the ball. Not bad luck. Just yet another occasion of this guy showing how pathetic he truly is behind all the 'niceness' in the locker room. He was poster idol to that guy Nardal too. They say never meet your idols.....

Andy and Tom - your comments were balanced and represent the goodness and flaws of Novak pretty accurately. However, I have an explanation for Novak’s actions that most have overlooked. Lines until recently were called by linespersons. If a player saw a serve as out, he/she will challenge immediately. Nardi would have done the same. Djoker in his subconscious mind, reckoned that Nardi is not playing that ball and maybe will appeal. Nardi realized in the instant that he had to play because he would lose the point if he stopped. Djoker was confused momentarily and lost his bearings. On colder reflection he would have realized he was wrong under the current electronic calling regime.

One impact the Coaches advising the players on court has : it invalidates what they always say, it's a lonely sport out there once you go on the court... you're all by yourself. Especially in the ITFs, Challengers ... there are many players who cannot afford a travelling Coach. Previously, at least on court it was 'level-field' between have-s and have-not-s.

It’s just not true that Djokovic wasn’t letting it go at the handshake. Nardi was the one who brought it up to apologize for stopping and Novak interrupted him to say there was no need to apologize. He specifically wanted the kid to enjoy his moment, but now he’s being falsely accused of the exact opposite. I saw people claiming Djokovic brought it up at the net, but I thought Roddick and Wertheim would be wise enough to verify for themselves because they would see that it obviously isn’t true.

Tommy and Alcaraz would be a better match. Unfortunately, he landed badly on that food and saw his opportunity out of the window because the Russian was stubborn and wanted him to be in the final and was a pest for Tommy. Kudos to Daniil but his game does not stack up to Alcaraz's game. This is a repeat of last year. It simply doesn't match when this guy is playing behind the Indian Wells letters.

Navarro looks a very hot prospect with ice in her veins. How the Ukranians perform at this level with their friends and family at risk is beyond my comprehension.

Some guys and gals just let their emotion and frustration get the better of them, and they just get surly in the moment. Novak is like that, which is unfortunate and why he isn't as beloved as Roger and Rafa. But that wiring is part of what makes him great. I agree that he will likely apologize later to his opponent.

People forget that Alcaraz has won tournaments without Ferrero, he even won his first tournament on grass last year in Queen without Ferrero and it was an ATP 500. But no one comments on it, it's like using Ferrero to throw shit at Alcaraz all the time . He has also played badly and lost with Ferrero present, so obviously if he wins or loses it is more on the side of what happens to Alcaraz, not if Ferrero is there or not....

Jcf and Carlos are extremely close and it's true that Carlos plays a lot more reassured with JCF there but it's not like he hasn't proven in the past that he can win tournaments without JCF (Miami 2022, Queens 2023, Buenos Aires 2023 etc). He's also 20 and has less experience than older players, i don't know why there is a hyper focus from people on coaching when it comes to Alcaraz to discredit him. And Cahill was babbling the entire match too so Sinner didn't lack help on his end.

That people say Alcaraz is better when Ferrero is there I think is not about whether coaching should be allowed. Ferrero has a calming effect on Alcaraz beyond coaching almost like a father figure. It is an interesting observation about their unique relationship. I feel like Roddick kind of took that discussion the wrong way…And got a bit self righteous about nothing.

Love the podcast. As tennis insiders, Andy and Jon have shared that Novak is a friendly guy on the tour. That is an experience that is separate from what fans (tennis outsiders) have. Fans will like or dislike players for a variety of reasons (personality, playing style, when they started watching tennis, shared home countries, etc.) and that's valid whether you cheer for Rafa, Novak, Daniil, Jannik, Carlos, or anyone else. The narrative around Djokovic is that his fan base is smaller than that of other legends', but they are passionate and defensive. For those tennis outsiders (who do not have any professional relationship with Novak) who dislike Djokovic, his behavior in the Nardi match was another reason to justify their position. His fans will shrug it off or support Djokovic's position blindly. What this results in is that tennis insiders may have different data than tennis outsiders to weigh in determining their feelings about Djokovic, or any player. Novak's career will him being loved by his fans and disliked by other tennis fans. He's 37 and has had years of great wins, tough losses, and multiple ugly incidents. It's unlikely that he can win or lose fans between now and the end of his career, whenever that is. All that to say, it's a topic that may not need to be brought up anymore.
