Two luxury two-doors powered by two fantastic V8s go head-to-head 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial/
This is a direct comparison between two luxury coupes but it’s one tinged with sentimentality, because it’s also a tribute to the engines that are such a huge part of their appeal.
What exactly will power the successors of the Jaguar F-TYPE and Lexus LC 500 - if indeed there are successors - isn’t yet known, but we can guarantee it won’t be eight cylinders, either supercharged (Jaguar) or naturally-aspirated (Lexus).
As such, this is a great opportunity to celebrate two of the most evocative V8s ever fitted to a road car, as well as tell which of these two stylish two-doors is the pick.

I’m an Aussie that lives in the US. Back in 2021, I looked at both and decided on the F-Type R convertible (which I’m not sure is available in Oz). The Lexus is very nice, but the raw power of the Jag is intoxicating. So far in the 3 years I’ve owned it, the Jag has been trouble free and has only had its scheduled services (which are included for 5 years or 50k miles). I should add that I very much like Lexus and have a ‘22 LS500 luxury edition as well.

That's good to hear. I still want an F Type R, but I do think the LC500 looks quite nice, despite some of the exterior designs not quite matching, and despite the F Type's interior seeming less luxurious than I expected. In person, I found all surfaces to be hard like they're plastic bits wrapped in leather without much padding under it. Still though, overall just for the sound and looks, the 2016 AWD is my favorite affordable two seater.

A welcome comparison, thanks. I would buy the Lexus if I had the money, for the overall.package. One must view the Lexus as a sporty GT - purchasers buying it as a sports car might be left wanting. I don't mind the Jag but would probably cross shop it with the 911.

F-type awd v6 tuned to 475hp, better sound actually imho (1970's F1 sound). No issues at 65k miles. I put metal coolant tubes on it to prevent the one known issue. Used, F-types are amazing deals. Best deal on the market by far.

This is not “plastic fake metal” !! It is brushed aluminum in the interior of the Lexus. Get your facts straight. What about mentioning the Jag’s infotainment screen that looks so dated. In regard to the touch pad of the older LC model, I got used to it and I do prefer the cleaner look of the dash over the new one. The only thing I wish my 2018 coupe has, is a front facing camera.

I always get a kick out of these types of comments. Supreme reliability is not necessarily a requirement in a purchase like this. Combined with other factors reasonable reliability could be good enough for someone depending on their goals. Modern day F-types are well worked out and quite reliable. They’re also much more aggressive, better handling, and powerful than the LC. They like to compare them but these things are for 2 very different buyers.

@@dlj1285 While I have money, I don’t have money to burn on constant maintenance. I still have my 35 year old Toyota MR-2 supercharged I got as my first car as a teenager, and would EASILY pick the LC500 for it’s Toyota/ Lexus reliability…..plus I MUCH PREFER it’s looks, and it’s far more RARE.

@@eddieg6436 That’s good. You do you. I like the LC as well for what it is. Performance-wise these 2 cars are on different planets. That said, the LC is more than fast enough for the street. I’m a Toyota fan. I have 2, so you don’t have to convince me of how good they are for reliability. I just don’t care if I have perfect reliability for a dream car purchase. There are other things to consider in such a purchase beyond reliability. Despite what you say, the latest F-types are very developed cars with very few issues. I know this though experience (I know family and friends with them, and I own one myself), not because Bob’s friend Bill told Sally’s Uncle that they were unreliable in the 80s and 90s.

I'll be trading my Lexus RCF for the LC500 later this year. I considered the F-Type for a minute, but notice a lot them sitting in Lexus pre-owned lots. Both are beautiful rides, but having driven both the LC is way more comfortable. The LC is a GT car and gets amazing mpg on long trips for a V8. He should have reviewed the hard-top instead of the convertible. The hard-top with Dynamic Handling package is a better experience for comparison. The convertible is heavier and lacks some features due the roof mechanisms. Many folks in the car group have gone from the Jag to the Lexus for whatever reason.

Completely wrong, I’ve owned one for 8 years and over 65k miles. Since 2021 every time I take it out, I redline it at least once and always drive in dynamic + paddles. Reliability is amazing long as you service it like every other car. Have had 1 problem over the years and it was a coolant leak during warranty. Sadly have coolant leak again but the new updated part will fix that issue permanently as i have seen on forums. The jag also sounds better than the LC (without me being bias). I love the exterior of the Lexus but it’s built for those who aren’t as driver focused and just want an elegant ride I feel. Thought of adding one to the collection but it’s just meh/a good ride. Transmission is horrible on it and Lexus has even said it themselves

Lexus 5.0 F motors make incredible induction sounds; at 3,700 rpm a sudden, deep baritone emanates and proves superior to muffler sounds. I manually shift GS F to 5k just to hear it again. F Type sports exhaust is hilariously fun. Neither is Porsche-grade at limit yet V8 motors are worth trade-off.

Jaguar has great style, sound and capability. But it will also have a great relationship with the workshop. The LC500 coupe is the one to go for with the performance pack if you want reduced chassis flex and improved cornering capability. It is far from being a slow car, in fact quite the opposite. In buying one of these two cars price is definitely a consideration and I wouldn’t even consider the Jag from a reliability standpoint alone. But having said that long live the V8 and we should commend both manufacturers on a great achievement.

What I get a kick out of is how so many people feel the need to tear down another really nice car to validate their choice. It’s so childish. I absolutely adore the F-type R for its brutal vibe and performant nature. It suits me more than an LC in terms of what I’m looking for. That said, I still appreciate the LC for what it is, and I certainly recognize that it’s a really nice vehicle even though it would not be my first choice. Car enthusiasts, so many of them bring these sorts of silly and childish view points. It’s strange. Anyone would be lucky to own either one of these cars at the end of the day.
