Having just taken delivery of my Overtrail, it is a lot better looking in person than on video! About 10 friends and strangers have reacted to seeing the GX with “WOW!” I’ve never had so many people gawk over any car I have owned.

I love how quiet the land cruiser is even with KO3s on it! Love it. FE is just so nice. I had to have center lockers on to get rear lockers to kick in. Its amazing off road! My only true complaint is the fuel tank size.

Better comparo would be GX OT and LC. And in my area, they can be had for the same price because Toyota dealerships are marking LCs up. GX all day here. Got to test drive a Premium+ and I’m on the list for an OT+.

Both are badass. The engine in the gx550 is the #1 reason I would choose it over the LC. Im unsure how the LC hybrid drives, but if it's anything like other hybrids with the brake assist when you release the accelerator, I find that less smooth in driving and distracting. The extra layer in the glass in the gx is an often missed nicety. I prefer the front end of the LC but the back end of the gx. I wouldn't personally do much in the way of modifications on either of them, so the kdss in the suspension is a plus for me. I think both are overpriced, and the gx should revaluate that part. Im hoping the 2025 will have enough potential kinks worked out in software, and maybe they will update the massaging seats to be better than the cat kneading as you described.

Great comparison Jon! I totally agree that the LC is a much better value than the Overtrail Plus. But the tables are turned when compared to the straight Overtrail. Mine came in at $71,474 without the moonroof. It included the Heads-Up Display (which I LOVE), Premium Paint, Traffic Jam Assist, Cool Box, Cargo Net, Cargo Mat and dealer installed Window Tint. That's about $1500 less than the First Edition. I'll readily admit, I miss the great LC MPG and real leather seats. And I'm super envious of the 2400 watt inverter. But by giving up a few luxuries from the Plus model, I'm starting my Overtrail off-road build at a $1500 lower price than the First Edition. Speaking of the off-road build & MPG, with the installation of a Westcott lift, Westcott roof rack, 35" tires and 17' Method wheels, my MPG has plummeted from 19.1 to 15.7 MPG. But I love the big motor, love the ride, love the look and will happily tolerate the extra fuel expense!

A friend of mine just bought a new Land Cruiser. I'm a HUGE Toyota fan and have now driven a few of these. For the most part, I'd say it's a cross between the outgoing (larger, beefier) Land Cruiser and a Highlander. That's the only way to put it.

I've driven and offroaded both. GX all day. The Land Cruiser doesn't feel like a premium product. The only thing you touch that feels good is the steering wheel, everything else feels cheap. Lots of hard plastics. The 4-inch bump for the hybrid battery in the back is just a pain, nevermind that the 12V battery is also in the back so when you put a winch on it you have to run the lines all the way back to the battery. Long story short: the GX fixes every complaint I have about the Land Cruiser. As for the "$10K bargain", the OverTrail+ is an extra $8-9K of parking assistance and massaging seats that you don't need. Get the Overtrail (no plus). Compared to how any offroader would option up the Land Cruiser, they end up within $1000 of each other.

Both are beautiful! I’m on the wait list for the OT+ at my local Lexus dealer. My neighbor has the middle trimmed Landcruiser, and the differences are very small compared to the top trim level(Toyota), and more content than the Lexus in some aspects for the Money. I have the iforce max in my 2024 Tacoma(same engine) and it has tons of power. Anyone who has driven that engine will most likely say the same thing. Already spoke with my salesperson at Toyota, and for 15k in savings, I’m leaning toward the LC. Great video Jon!!

Try the foot sensor on the GX when the car is locked vs unlocked, that might be the difference in it working the first time or the second time.

I'd go GX Overtrail base, with no options (if I could find one). The V6 and no hump in the back for the hybrid battery. The LC front-end looks better, but, what can you do.

I would rate the Overtrail over the LC LC edition bs its very close. Most people cross shopping each would love either. Now in terms of front end mods and approach angles the LC will require less cutting if you are into that. I would put 35s on either and I feel the GX will be tougher to fit those tires without some cutting but maybe I am wrong. For LC is likely a lift and the right backspacing.

Standard oil change @ Toyota for the Land Cruiser First Edition vs. standard oil change @ Lexus for the GX550 Overtrail+ If the cost @ Lexus is anything like what my brother had to pay for a 15K service on his LX570, I would shy away from basically anything Lexus (their price was ABSOLUTELY INSANE, checked against three different Lexus dealers in the metro area here).

He wanted to get that 15K service done @ the dealership...he has subsequently sold that vehicle (mainly because it was not meeting his overall needs, wishes & wants). Could he have found a Non-dealer servcie facility...sure. Bottom line here is that even the "veteran discount" price of just shy of $400 for a 15K service is horseshit! Lexus (and many others) are just too damn proud of their "service" ...

Maybe it’s just me but the LC feels more and more awkward slotted between the 2025 4Runner and the GX550. It feels like the 4Runner is going to be the enthusiasts choice, the GX the mall crawlers choice, and the LC - I’m not sure anymore… They’re still gonna sell metric butt tons of them though.

Had a 4Runner; loved it, but traded into a Sierra to tow my camper, the 4Runner couldn't tow enough. I'd like to have an SUV that can tow my camper; as much as I'd like to just 'stick' with the Toyota and go w/ the Land Cruiser, I'd have to jump to the GX550 Overtrail simply for the towing capacity (I'd skip going to the + version).

@@TRDJon Previous Sequoia didn't tow as much when I went to my Sierra, but, yes, the newer Sequoia can tow; but, it's even more expensive than an Overtrail. And not as good offroad. (Not that I'm a hard-core rock-crawler, my stock AT4 suits my needs... but, I'd take the more capable Overtrail over the more expensive Sequoia.)

strange that LC gets 3 zone climate but no rear heated seats. And the GX gets rear heated seats but no 3 zone...I really wish the LC would come with a panoramic roof. Not the one on the GX that just changes from clear to opaque but one that fully opens. I think the LC models in Europe market get that option. Maybe LC model year 26???

Different Jon here. I suspect it will be about 2 to 3k more than the equivalent Tacoma, about midway between Tacoma and Land Cruiser. This is how I justified buying the Land Cruiser- it's only going to be a bit more.

Toyota even kept the cupholders and AC vents so it is weird to not see the 3rd row option on the 250 as clearly a 3rd row is according to Toyota, a perfectly reasonable sku that literally all of their mid SUVs offer 😜

The Land Cruiser 1958 comes with rear lockers and has better articulation than the TRD 4Runners with KDSS even without the sway bar disconnect. The Land Cruiser mid trim and First edition have better articulation than the GX550 Overtrail. Check out Car and Drivers test on the two. GX550 is great if you want a 3rd row.

@@TRDJon I'm confused bc $83k is fully loaded with all the options, I don't think there is anything missing at that point. So for $10k you get a V6, EKDSS and upgraded suspension, massaging seats, better sound system, acoustic glass, better warranty and Lexus dealership/service, hood struts :), and bigger screen. The extended climate control is something I really wish the GX had due to having 2 dogs, its something I'd actually forgo a lot of GX options for.. But for $10k more you are getting your moneys worth if those options are important to you.

I pointed out several things in this video the LC has over the GX. Massaging seats are meh, they doesn’t even massage well, the ekdss is ok but the LC still has more articulation than the GX. So you get a v6 basically and acoustic glass. That’s about it for 10K more.

That engine alone on the GX 550 is worth the extra money then you got better rims and tires, better sound system, less noise inside, better transmission, better suspension and the list goes on. Although they are built in the same factory the Lexus vehicles are always made better than Toyota. The only Toyota Land Cruiser comparable to the GX 550 is the GR Land Cruiser which is not available in North America. Jon I told you in previous video to admit the GX is better. Enough of the bias bullshit lol. Also, the EKDSS isn't just a button difference compared to KDSS, the active dynamic suspension drives much much better than the land Cruiser and even the other GX 550 models without the active suspension. I have driven both on and off road and the GX 550 Overtrail and Plus model kill the Land Cruiser.

Haven't been on the websites to compare builds, but it seems the Overtrail (NOT the OT+) makes this comparison very different being $10K less. About the only thing you really get on the OT+ is the fancy sound system and massaging seats which is a lot to spend for that. The base OT is much closer to the LC and would be worth it for the V6. I still like the interior of the LC better though.

@@TRDJon just look at your dash. Look at that super cheap plastic binnacle surround. Something you are going to stare at everytime you drive it. Then start looking around you. A couple of soft spots doesn’t hide the other stuff. Ever sat in a Kia Telluride or Jeep GJ? Ever looked at what those interiors are like for $20k less? Now obviously they are not the same class of SUV - maybe the GJ is as it has low range, crawl control, off road modes etc. but how is it that they can manage to make their interiors out of high quality materials through out, but Toyota chooses not to? Instead the cheapness of the LC is passed off as ‘rugged’. When you know it is just cheap. I’m not saying LC should have a different design interior. I’m saying they should have built it from much higher quality materials. All the other mfgs are.
