A word about trims. I'm in the Chicago area. Back in early September I bought a 2024 CX-5 Premium in Deep Crystal Blue Mica for my wife...absolutely beautiful and no paint surcharge! Got it at $1,000 below MSRP. It only had wheel locks, all weather mats and a rear step pad as required accessories (all of which were fine with me). Many come with installed roof rails which not only cost $450 but to me actually detract from the car. There are many other port installed options like mud guards, cargo mats, privacy covers, seat guards you name it which become part of the sticker price so trying to get what you want the way you want can be a challenge. I think I just got lucky. It was in transit and arriving in a week. Couldn't see going for the next step up Premium Plus trim for an additional $2,700 as only a heated steering wheel interested her. Didn't need wireless Apple/Android, cell phone charger, heated rear seats heads up display etc. But that's a personal preference. I also I drove both the Turbo and the Non Turbo prior to purchase and the Non Turbo is plenty quick especially in sport mode. She recently caught herself going 80 down the expressway not realizing it since the car is so quiet. So that tells you a little about sound insulation as well as power. It is a wonderfully designed, well thought out car both inside and out. The workmanship is impeccable. The interior is very luxury like. It's been around for quite a while so thoroughly tested. In my opinion it is one of the best deals out there in this crazy market. I say, if it fits your needs, my recommendation is...buy one!

We plan to buy one of these for one simple reason - reliability. The powertrain dates back to 2014 on the previous generation CX-5 which carried over with the last redesign to this version in 2017. With 10 years of experience building the four cylinder engines with a 6 speed transmission, this car is virtually guaranteed to last at least 200,000 with few problems. I have bought my last few cars this way and every time the car lasts 200,000 no problem. 2006 Saab 9-3 lasted 195,000 and I sold it - the second owner has the original powertrain with 270,000 now. Still own 2013 Subaru Legacy H6 engine with 5 speed automatic now with almost 150,000 and no problems. Also a 2018 Buick Envision with the 10 year old turbo engine and 6 speed automatic with 79,000 and no problems. Plan for all of these to last 200,000. note the Honda CR-V you cannot get fog lights - living on a mountain that gets fog and snow, this is a definate no for me.

It's rare that I agree 100% with a vehicle video review, but I do in this instance. I've been driving Mazdas for over 20 years now, and after test driving the new 6th Gen CR-V, I was ready to jump ship and get one. Why didn't I? The CR-V not having a spare tire really irked me, and no ventilated seats (because Florida), but then Mazda offered 0% for 60 months on a new CX-5. I simply couldn't pass it up. 7th Mazda is officially in the books. I went for the Turbo Premium, and I'm not looking back :)

My thoughts exactly. I was close to buying a 2024 CR-V Hybrid but the lack of spare tire was a bummer. Also I didn't want to spend top dollar on the Touring to get the Bose stereo. Great review. I agree with all of your points, except for your take on the seats. I absolutely love the leather and lack of bolstering. Gravity on my caboose in the seat and the limits of the engine and handling to keep me in the seat fine. The problem with bolstering at this price range is that the raised door-side edge will get constant contact as the driver gets in and out of the car, which breaks down the foam underneath and "deflates" the bolster. The competition's leather, both in quality and unnecessary bolstering, are enough for me to eliminate them from contention. The unaspirated, front-wheel driver models drive smooth with surprising power for daily driving tasks. My niggles: Small gas tank. Odd heating/cooling/thermostat issues, covered under warranty for now. A bit of a trek to the nearest dealership for service.
@Realistick

Thanks, I suppose the bolstering on these can be mild, I wouldn't want much more than it has, but just a little more for my taste. The thigh support is what I really hope Mazda addresses!

@@Realistick For people on the shorter side of average, the seats are pretty good IMO. And at our seating position, the back seats have pretty good room (as you pointed out at 6'3"). For soon-to-be empty nesters that still remember cars that were engaging to drive...our CX-5 is perfect.

I was worried that I wouldn't like the seats on the CX-5 after all the comments I have read about the seats but it turns out I love them. Firm but comfortable even on longer drives for me at 5`10". Just drove it for 2.5 hours. No problem. I agree that agressive bolsters are good if you fit well inside them well. If not they can dig into your hip and they do get worn getting in and out of the vehicle.

No need to fight against time, Mazda design is aging best in the class and due to reliable drivetrain types and build quality this CX-5 will last for a long time , look clean and fresh for a while . Something that other Japanese brands can't say due to weird and off looking designs , poor and cheap drivetrain choices . Yes Nissans , Subbies, Hondas. Only Toyota can last as long but it ages quicker than Mazda as it looks not as clean and timeless as Mazda.

We have 3 CX-5s; a 2013, 2015 and 2018. I am thinking it might be best to wait until there are more used Ford Mavericks available, the hybrid for better gas mileage or the ecoboost for all wheel drive or towing. Or the CX-30 and rent a minivan for longer trips with 4 or more people. We do at least 3 test drives for each possibility over a few weeks, it is possible we get another CX-5. We like the steering feel the most. The seats feel too firm at first, but are quite comfortable for a longer drive. The Maverick stereo would need some aftermarket add ons. We like the Pirelli P7 Cinturato tires the best, quiet smooth and they last 70 thousand miles.

One of the best takes I’ve seen. A next-gen CX5 with just a tad more length and width, digi display and a hybrid option would absolutely kill in this segment. The CX50 loses the upright, nimble quality that made the 5 a best-seller. Mazda’s thinking on this has been mystifying.
@jbm0866
@jbm0866 5 ай бұрын
Call me crazy, but "oldest in it's class" is an upside for me. The drivetrain is tried and true, (even in turbo form) and frequently used functions are still buttons and switches. I also vastly prefer the old school hooded instrument binnacle vs the one giant tablet look for both the instruments and center infotainment that most cars released the past 3 years or so seem to have. Also if we're comparing it to it's slightly smaller cousin (CX-50) or the much smaller CX-30, it still has Mazda's multi-link independent rear suspension. That may not make any difference to most buyers, and admittedly Mazda does a great job tuning their torsion beam...but I still like the idea of each rear wheel being able to move independently of each other. Of course on something like the CX-5 that comes fairly stiffly sprung from the factory (vs some competitors) it may not make much difference in the ride comfort, but it does help to improve handling feel. The interior no longer has the "wow" factor it did when it was first released (2017?) but still looks great to my eyes..and certainly still better looking than RAV4 or CRV interiors. Of course some of that comes at the cost of form over function, but for me Mazda found an acceptable balance between the two.

As the owner of both a six-speed 2010 Mazda3 sedan (for a little while longer) and a 2024 CX-5 Signature, I truly understand how well you grok Mazda's design philosophy. I don't think there's a single thing in this video that I disagree with. I didn't want a 900 lb weight increase over my 3 or a slushbox, but since my knees demanded it, the CX-5 does a good job of delivering driving pleasure in a class that's nearly devoid of it. Otherwise, I would've saved gas over the long haul and gotten a CR-V.

In 2023 I test drove the CX-5 Turbo against the Outback XT. Here are things I didn’t like about the CX-5: - The high belt line affected my ability to see the drivers’ faces in the cars beside me on the passenger side. I ride a motorbike too, so I rely on being able to see drivers’ faces help me predict their manouvering intentions for my safety. Disagreeing with Tyler, all-round visibility wasn’t great. - The driver’s seat squab was too short. So I felt discomfort under my thighs after about an hour on the road (I’m 6’ tall). - The car only comes with a space saver wheel, not full size. I ended up buying the Outback XT, which solved all of the above issues (all Outbacks sold in Australia come with a full size spare) but there are a few niggles: - I find the throttle difficult to modulate in the economy “i” mode. It’s much better in “s” mode. I suspect that this is due to the engine preferring to cruise at very low RPMs in “i” mode, but the turbo engine is a bit gutless there, so the CVT needs to “down shift” to accelerate. The CX-5 Turbo’s transmission is much more intuitive and fun. - The length of the car and height of the bonnet / hood takes getting used to, particularly in tight parking garages. - The steering rack is a bit slow, and requires a “reach over” grab of the steering wheel on 90-degree turns. I was spoilt with a fast rack in my previous Golf GTI. This slow-ish steering rack discourages enthusiastic driving a bit. The CX-5 rack definitely felt faster, and together with the peppy turbo engine and torque converter transmission would make a more fun drive for sure. Every choice is a compromise.

After owning a CX7 for 13 years and 203k miles, I did buy a CX5 preferred this year. I wanted a naturally aspirated engine, a non-CVT transmission, better Bluetooth for being able to talk on the phone hands-free, and a non-hybrid. What I don't like is the following, The non-Bose system is just OK, not nearly enough bass for me and I miss the CD player. The console armrest is too far back to be really comfortable for me. I despise the Istop, and although there is a button to turn it off, I usually forget to disengage it at least once a day. Not a fan of rain-sensing wipers, if you have freezing rain/ice overnight and have them on they will automatically activate when it is not good to do so. I also do not need AWD, I wish there was still an option for FWD. Overall, it is still a fun, zippy SUV which I think has the best in class exterior. Time will tell if it has staying power....

Hello, i am not able to decided which model to buy between CX 5 or CX 50 and reliability is one of the main point which is confusing me. Does being assembled in Alabama make CX 50 less reliable than Japanese assembled CX 5? Please reply with your suggestions. Thanks in advance

Probably won’t matter at all. I usually find that cars built in japan from Japanese brands have great build quality (not always) but the CX-5 hasn’t really been noticeably more or less reliable than other cars from the brand. Go with what your heart desires!

The 2024 GX in Canada is getting a recall on the screen/mic? Basically our 2024 cx-5 Gx has issues with an echo for the person you're talking to over the phone... The dealership said that Mazda is planning a recall. Additionally, one thing I found off with this car is the steering... I find that I have to constantly correct it whilst driving unlike the steering on my Toyota Carolla hatchback. Kind of weird to drive on the highway lol.

You mean Toyota, the recall king? We recently had a Rav4 as a rental when our CX-3 was in the shop (due to an accident). What a boring turd of a vehicle. Very low rent interior. We were both extremely unimpressed with it. I would take the CR-V over it anyday. In fact, I would get a Trailblazer or Encore GX over the Rav4.

I bought one. I liked the Honda CRV too but it has a few MASSIVE shortcoming. CVT, goofy hybrid system that saves 0 gas. Horrible stereo. The Honda was more comfortable. I actually could probably live with the CVT but the goofy hybrid and bad stereo coming in at a higher price? No way Honda. No way.

In 2012 I cross shopped the CX5 and Subaru Outback... wife liked the Outback better, I liked the CX5... got the Outback. 12 years later, I am cross shopping the 2024 Outback and 2024 CX5 and CX50... Outback in the lead based on our initial research... test drives to come.

I drove a new ‘24 Outback and it felt unsafe at 65-80 mph (legal) highway speeds. One KZbinr said same about ‘25 Forester. Sways and feels like you could lose control or flip in an emergency maneuver situation. Traded in my trusty 2010 Mazda3 for a 2024 CX-5 Preferred in “Rhodium” white.

@@glengoogling7597 I've purchased the 2024 Outback after driving both. The interior is much more "open" and nicer than the CX5. It's been great so far... no tracking issues on the highway. The boxer engine in Subaru's gives it a lower center of gravity than most other cars, even with almost 9 inches of ground clearance. Maybe the car you drove had hit a pothole or curb and was out of alignment. I still like the exterior design of the CX5 more... and the other thing I liked better in the Mazda was steering feel... the Outback steering is very light and lacks feedback. After driving both, we picked the Outback again.

2024 CX-5s do not ALL have “painted fenders” (by which he actually means painted cladding… obviously they all have painted fenders, duh!). Case-in-point… the non-turbo Carbon Edition has flat black cladding still. Sorry, but this is just lazy researching. 🙄
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 ай бұрын
A fender is just the panel or area around the wheel wells. I only call it cladding if it’s unpainted but I can see your pov. Already pinned a comment 5 months ago about the cladding. There’s a ton of research that goes into each video, on occasion, I’ll get a small nuance wrong, correct myself, and move on. The goal is to eliminate that altogether but I’m not perfect… yet🥸

Even the hashboard display looks like a cheap kindle table stuck on as an afterthought. A horrible design that many others are doing also, instead of a nice integrated display like in the new Subarus
