Several Oscar records have been set today: - John Williams breaks his own record as the oldest ever Oscar nominee in any category (he will be 92 on Feb 8) - Martin Scorsese becomes both the 2nd ever person to receive 10 Directing nominations as well as the category's oldest ever nominee (he's 81). Notably, 7 out of his 10 Directing nominations came after he turned 60. Additionally, he joins Steven Spielberg as the only other filmmaker to have directed Best Picture nominees in 6 different decades. - Robert De Niro breaks Katharine Hepburn's record for longest time span between first and last acting nominations (De Niro now has a 49 year span (1974-2023) to Hepburn's 48 years (1933-1981)). - KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON makes both Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio the joint recordholders for most credited appearances in Best Picture nominees (11th credited film for each (De Niro's uncredited appearance in AMERICAN HUSTLE is not counted here)) - Thelma Schoonmaker becomes both the most nominated and oldest ever Best Editing nominee (9th nomination at age 84). She also becomes the first woman and the 4th person overall to be nominated in 6 different decades (in her case from 1970s to 2020s inclusive). - This year marks the first time ever that multiple non-English language films are nominated for Best Picture in a single year (ANATOMY OF A FALL and THE ZONE OF INTEREST, and arguably PAST LIVES as well). Likewise, this year also holds the record for most female-directed Best Picture nominees as well (3: ANATOMY OF A FALL, BARBIE, and PAST LIVES) as well as the first time 2 A24 movies got nominated for Best Picture in the same year (PAST LIVES and THE ZONE OF INTEREST). - Greta Gerwig becomes the first woman in Oscars history to have directed 3 Best Picture nominated films (LADY BIRD, LITTLE WOMEN, and BARBIE) - Mark Ruffalo ties the record for most Best Supporting Actor nominations ever (this is his 4th Supporting nom). - Bradley Cooper becomes only the 4th actor ever to direct themselves to more than 1 acting nomination (Sir Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood are the other 3). He is also one of 3 people to receive acting/producing double nominations in the same year more than once (after Beatty and Eastwood). - This year also marks the first time ever that more than 1 actor/actress received acting/producing double nominations in the same year (Bradley Cooper for MAESTRO and Emma Stone for POOR THINGS), with Emma Stone becoming only the 2nd ever woman to pull this off after Frances McDormand.

The direction in its scenes were prominent through how spielberg sets out the different hard hitting scenes. Robot Dreams's inclusion only solidifies the fact that the front-runner for best independent animated feature at the Annies gets an Oscar nomination, and TBH, in retrospect, I don't know why we all thought it had no shot, becuse it's very much an animators movie, and is the tpye of animtion the branch loves. The Branch loves animation with no dialogue and a bunch of unique character designs with expressive animation. Let's be honest here the PGA, Critics Choice, and BAFTA were never going for this movie because they rarely go for Indie stuff in the first place.

The Zone of Interest screenplay nom over Killers is based on the accomplishment of the adaptation. The novel is quite different from the movie, with the exception of the setting. Both the novel and the movie have similar themes, but they explore them in far different ways. Glazer completely eliminated two of the main characters from the novel and chose to focus on just the commandant and his wife. I easily see how the writers branch gave significant credit to Glazer for his approach to adapting Amis’s novel in a unique way, compared to just being a straightforward adaptation.

@quentintickler4615 To be completely honest I like Spider-Verse better than a few of the films that got nominated (Maestro, Killers, Poor Things). But it’s fine, I knew it was dead as soon as it missed Critics Choice. It’ll probably win Animated still I would blame Pinocchio missing score and song on EEAAO’s over-performance

I feel like it must be said, just to make sure: Award nominations will never satisfy everyone. It’s okay to be at least a little sad/annoyed/possibly mad at things that made it/didn’t make it. Take a small consolation that your favourites are still your favourites even if they aren’t nominated for awards. What that DOESN’T mean is to bash award bodies because they didn’t choose your favourites. Every awards body is different and complicated. Everyone has opinions and that’s cool and all, but that does not entitle you to think that your picks are “better” than an awards body’s. Frankly, there is no such thing as a “better opinion” when it comes to awards because art is in some ways subjective. People will have different experiences and tastes to bring when they decide the nominees and the eventual winners. Be careful not to dehumanize awards bodies because there are people behind the decisions.

I’m a really big John Williams fan, and sure the score of Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny is good, but hell nah it’s not an original score how did it even qualify for Oscar’s. Love that people are continuing to recognise his success but like this is kindof getting out of hand when he basically gets auto nominated just by making a score no matter how good it is. Also Academy needs to lose their anti-animated film mindset because it’s like they don’t think it’s a real film with the amount they just snub them from everything when they actually deserve it.
@HorrorGeek95 ай бұрын
I'm so sad that Spider-Verse got snubbed for Score for John Williams just because of name recognition. I predicited that Jodie Foster and Annette Bening would get in, I was just hoping that the older voters would not care enough to push John WIlliams in Score 😭

I felt really underwhelmed by these nominations. Nothing too surprising. America Ferrera is probably the biggest surprise but even that didnt feel too out of left field. And it just felt like The Academy only watched 10 films and went "Good Enough". I know that isnt actually the case obviously. But it just seems like they went out of their way to nominate the same films over and over or the same people (I mean at this point both Diane Warren and John Williams could fart into a microphone and the academy would bend over backward to nominate them). I think I would have liked if they spread the love around a little more.
