2024 PolyCon KnightFights @ Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Local Buhurt Team SLO Manticores Armored Combat

The San Luis Obispo Manticores were invited to meet and greet at the 2024 PolyCon gaming convention at the local Cal Poly University campus in San Luis Obispo. June 23rd 2024 6/23/24
I believe this is the 41st annual PolyCon gaming convention, and it shows, because it was an exceptionally fun event to attend for local gamers and nerds alike.
We were excited to see the local HEMA group the Blackfriars, educating and performing for the crowds.
We were fighting on concrete so we did not allow any grappling takedowns and worked primarily on striking and defense in a 1v1 format. The reason we didn’t do takedowns on concrete is because when people fall backwards, there is a higher chance for a concussion. Safety First!
Knights are fighting in full suit of steel armor and fighting with blunted steel weapons. Today the steel fighters used mostly 1 handed weapons with some type of wooden or steel shield. Medieval weapons like 1h axes 2h axes, swords, maces, bucklers, punch shields, etc…
Each match up was a 1minute round. In this format the fighters are trying to score more points than their opponent. A point is counted when there is a clean strike from a weapon, punch, kick, or knee.

Why do most buhurt or just every knight sparring vid i watch, they fight during what looks like to be summer. why not during fall or early winter so its not as hot?

Buhurt players tend to follow events like tourneys or renaissance faires. Those are usually done in the summer. 🤷. Definitely still get training during other seasons just tend to be less events for our sport
