We drive, POV, and discuss some engineering behind the 2024 Porsche 911 S/T. This is a car you want but can't have. The street-going GT3RS turned GT3 Touring with more old-school reflexes, manual transmission and a better ride. At over $300k is this the choice of collectors? Others to consider are Z06, Ferrari, and Lamborghini.

It's really special for it's pivotal role in the design of the updated manual gearbox, but the car itself is another unobtainable, parts-bin, limited-run 911. That said, I hope some owners will share the experience with others, it looks like an awesome experience to even ride along.

As someone thats owned a lot of Porsche sports cars, these are almost marketing gimics or niche lifestyle products. They never really do it for me, for me peak Porsche has always been GT3 or GT3 RS - they are a lot of car and if you buy from new, you spec it exactly the way you want it. In many respects they're just high end parts bin specials - for some Porsche owners these are must haves. Whereas for others you look at other options for something different, thats how I ended up with two Mclarens and a Ferrari lol. The 992 is the first generation in a long time that I haven't bought a 911 - I don't find them attractive or interesting, interiors although well made, have a german taxi cab feel to them. Road wise they didn't really shift the game on much from the 991.2 series and it could be argued the 991.2 is more playful and better executed in design. In fact the 992 Carreras with the 3L twin turbo are fairly dull cars.
@ISpinUWin
@ISpinUWin 6 ай бұрын
I’ve had the privilege of driving a friend’s 991GT3RS at the track and OMG I am ruined. It was the feel of my Lotus with the build quality of a German car, the noise as you said of Lambos, old Ferraris, it is the perfect car. All that being said I hate Porsche because of all the dealer BS with all of the RS cars. Of course I guess if I had mega $ it wouldn’t impact me.

As much as I sympathize with your point at 0:52, no one who can access these will drive them. It'll end up just like the 911R: sitting on tire cushions in a climate controlled garage, waiting for the resale value to quadruple. I love the idea of this car and the execution is near flawless. It's a shame none of the buyers will even try to experience it.
@theanthonyv
@theanthonyv 5 ай бұрын
Totally. I owned a GT4 manual and a GT4 RS and used both as daily drivers and put almost 50k miles on them. Screw the resale value. Anyone who doesn’t drive the shit out of these cars disrespects the engineers and has no soul or balls.
@stephenhester7354
@stephenhester7354 5 ай бұрын
A factor many don’t realize is time. It’s not a complicated equation. More money requires more dedication. More dedication requires more time. More money means more options for the more limited free time. Add it up and most expensive cars don’t get many miles put on them. That’s independent of the resale factor, which is relevant.

Porsche is great at reconfiguring each sub system of the 911 to achieve specific goals. They are also great at developing the platform after it has been released and then using those devopments as underpinning of the next generation. This S/T model is an example of my first statement, but I remember hearing that when the 992.1 was released, it used almost the exact same rear end components as the 991.2 GT3... Which is just an upgraded version of... You get the idea. I wish Mazda and Toyota/Subaru could figure out how to apply this philosophy to the Miata and 86/BRZ so that they could have low volume specialty versions with high price tags for the few that can afford it, make their development costs back and let those upgrades trickle back down into the $25-30k base models

Someone with a real enthusiast mindset! I keep saying the new GR86 as a RS type model would be amazing with the Subaru flat six. There’s some amazing videos of GT86’s with the EZ30 at the ring. The ND doesn’t even need much since it already has a good induction noise. Just stiffer sway bars, 15mm height reduction, and 225 square tires…and of course seats. Even the recaro’s aren’t bolstered enough

Yes, it’s a limited edition… but, let’s be real, you can’t go into a Porsche dealership and buy a GT3 RS either, and it’s just as much $$,but the tone felt different here. I was so hoping to find out things like what materials were used in the clutch to get it to a third of the rotating mass, just as one example. Glad to see this review drop…was going to trade my GLA for either this or a Miata RF. Will probably go with this though…looks solid.

That moment when he stopped being to professional and just said: " I like to go sideways" you can tell the engineer has a good idea of fun

Lower limits, softer, slower steering, less locking diff is key these days. Wish this was accessible to majority. Can only dream if a GT3T with software updates would get it close perhaps. Thank you. Ur content is different from the rest. Love it when the chassis guy is a fan of " sliding". ST may stand for "Sliding Tail"

Thx for the POV just the sounds.

I am willing to bet vast majority of these will go to people that already have many Porsche vehicles and this one will likely get garaged and see couple hundred miles a year at best. It's a dang shame, because whether we like it or not (as enthusiasts), we have probably reached peak of naturally aspirated engines and we will likely never see anything like this again, unless synthetic fuels etc gain real traction. Thanks for taking us along the ride. The POV segment with just engine wail and no words and silly gimmicks allowed me to live vicariously through you for a moment.

My god the way the engine bounces on the upshift with that noise. CAR ORGASMIC!!! I pray one day I can afford one of those 3 cars you mentioned. 9000 RPM porsche, huracan or more likely the Z06

Excellent video as always! Just mind boggling how Porsche manage to make these incremental changes to the 911 Carrera to this ST & have totally different ‘personas’ to each variant. Considering I am a recent proud owner of 911 GT3 that proudly is on display on my TV stand this is a bit out of my budget but will buy if one pops in Costco. Different tangent, what road is this? Is it somewhere in the SF bay area ?

Great stuff. If I were a customer I’d prefer a more custom gearset compared to GT3T, that short final drive with even shorter 1-4 gears, and longer 6th gear. Them changing just the final ratio is somewhat lazy for the money they are asking on top of the GT3T. Love they went with green gauges and more classic looking fabrics.
