2024 RAM 6.7 Cummins ECM swap and dyno tune at Hardway Performance

Tag along with us while we replace the ECM on this brand new 2024 Ram 3500 6.7 Cummins so we can dyno tune it with HPTuners. We started off with 375hp/994tq all stock and ended up with 449hp/1087tq. Dyno tuning to be continued once we have access to more info in the data logger software and the shift on the fly operating system is released by HPT for the 2024! In the mean time this fella gets to enjoy a gain of 74hp and 93ft/lbs of torque, increased engine speed & removed speed limiter!

We disagree with that thought process but with your truck, by all means, replace whatever you'd like.

When you have the ECM out for unlocking, that would be a great time to also install the Banks Monster Ram Intake since you already have the EGR valve and intake ram disconnected. It's not the grid heater per se, it's the nut on the bolt that corrodes, falls off, and ends up taking out your cylinder head and/or scarring your #6 cylinder wall. As long as you're tuning it, who wouldn't want an 88% increase in MAFs in your intake manifold?

An 88% increase in flow for the intake horn itself does not equate to an 88% increase in airflow in your combustion chamber, that's just the tactical marketing that you fell for. We will be performing unbiased product testing to increase air flow to these trucks in the very near future and based on our experience, we wont be starting with the intake horn as that's not at all the roadblock in the system on a stock truck.

There's no emotion in the above replies, just stating facts. The bolt that can fall in the intake does seem like a serious design flaw, but dont expect an 88% increase becuase you swapped a shiny intake horn on. As stated already (emotionless and fact based at that), we will be doing some unbiased dyno testing in the near future on parts to help get air flow to the combustion chamber where it actually matters and will be sharing our results, stay tuned!

So emissions on tuning, 74hp/94tq? No chances of a delete correct? What will benefit with this over stock? I’m not looking for power, just don’t want to be stranded on the side of the road when the emissions system breaks down. Currently no issues but you never know. Any MPG gain if you stay out of the throttle? Heard there will be some EGR issues with a CAI, might have to tune for that I guess even though no one can figure out why a CAI would mess with the EGR and throw a check engine.

No chance of a delete from us thanks to our agreement with the EPA in 2020 promising we'd behave (google EPA vs Hardway if you'd like). No MPG gains to be reported because all of the things we would normally to do improve MPG also increase NOX emissions and it wouldn't pass the FTP-75 drive cycle (sniffer) test. EGR issues are out there with one truck we work with that has a combination of an aftermarket cold air intake as well as an aftermarket intake horn but the issues are more of an increased air flow above what the truck expects to see and sets a CEL vs an actual issue that would degrade performance or reliability. Fixing that the appropriate way (we can't disable DTC's) is very high on our priority list so our customers can enjoy some increased air flow on the inlet side without the orange light on the dash staring at them.

So by adding horsepower and more torque to a truck with emissions. So does this tune add fuel and change timing characteristics? These trucks seem to have enough problems with the DEF systems failing and the DEF pump going out even before the truck reaches 40,000 miles. If the tuner can de tune it a bit and give the DPF and DEF systems a break then I can see doing it. It’s like taking a top fuel dragster and adding emissions controls to each exhaust pipe. EPA is a business that puts more $ on the table for their board members. It’s funny how they just worry about the so called air but who cares about billions of plastic containers and cardboard boxes ending up in landfills. Then they build track homes on it. Scams!!!

@@timothydare6007 no issues here at 60k. Just need to use good DEF that’s not expired or crap at the pump. Also I use Archoil fuel treatment now. I’ll never go into regen again.

@@bunsguns8222not from what I’ve seen others complain about. Everyone who seems to have def issues and pump issues etc all say they use pump def. I mean just looking at the nozzles they are all crusted up and look like crap. If a def tanks say 10,000 gallons, does it really go through fast? I have no clue. I’d just rather buy a new jug that’s sealed and I can see the born on date.

about to do mine, have all the stuff just waiting on nicer weather. so for the bypass cable is says it needs to be plugged into the 5th slot down. what if my truck already has a factory plug there? does it matter what slot it goes into as long as its the black block on the left side?

Ever hear of cruise control no working on the 23's with ecm swap? No cruise, no high idle, no sotf through cruise. It's like the cluster is dead when we put the tune in.

Yes, if you're tuner doesn't use the appropriate operating system (like putting a 19-21 operating system in a 23 or newer truck), that stuff tends to happen. We'd suggest finding a better calibration company if they can't get you taken care of.

Since the programming can be done through the OBD2 port on the truck, why go through all the drama of an ECU swap?

22+ ECUs are locked so they have to swap in a 19-22.

So you’re making it think it has an older computer because it’s easier to tune? I know the newer computers are much harder to get into. I’m glad I have a ‘22 I don’t like that fully digital dash at all.

We like the digital dash but don't mind the one in our 2021 either. We use an older computer that allows us to flash it but retain the 2024 operating system that originally came in the truck.

2022 model year and newer have ECM's that we can't tune with aftermarket calibrations so we use the very similar 2019-21 model year ECM's on the 22 and newer so we can tune them.

Ultimately that's up to the dealer, we'd suggest returning the ECM to the stock readout file prior to taking it in for warranty work.

Yes. It would void a warranty haha. Even if it’s under warranty your truck will be in shop for 3 weeks to 2 months.
