We review the newest Range Rover. The 2024 Sport boasts a fantastic feature set and luxury features that actually work. This vehicle can be priced at around $90,000 to start and reach upwards of $145,000. In a crazy world of expensive luxury SUVs from BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche, the Range Rover takes a modern yet classic approach to this segment.

I've always felt the reviews of the low to mid spec versions of any vehicle are the best ones to watch. The inherent goodness (or lack thereof) is apparent when you have the base engine, the base seats, the base suspension, etc. If all of that is good and you come away feeling like "wow, awesome ride!" then that means a lot more to me. Porsche is like that---base Macan is a joy to drive. BMW, maybe Alfa....not Audi though; for Audi you CANNOT ever bother with the FWD stuff with the base 2.0 engine. If this RR Sport is this good at the base level, then JLR has hit one out of the park.
@johntechwriter

Mazda’s base-model Miata is the Sport, and nobody even knows it exists. That is just how the dealers want it, because they can then gouge their customers thousands extra for the Club, which comes with a few brand-name add-ons.

You're not too old. FC P0606 for the B58 failure had me lose it 😂. When you guys mentioned "irrational", I completely empathize with that. For a while now, something about the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport has hit the sweet spot of feeling good to drive, while also feeling premium and remaining completely capable. You know in the back of your head that something (usually the air suspension) will fail horribly, but they look and feel so good that you try to justify it anyway. I leased the previous gen of the RRS in 2020 after years of BMWs and Audis. At the beginning, I was skeptical and went along with it because my wife was excited about it. After 3 years, I ended up loving this thing and its been the best car I've owned...0 issues amazingly, solid build quality, great audio system, better steering/brake feel than current BMWs/Audis, very comfortable seats, looks great, practical, etc. Despite being a large SUV, it has the feel and dynamics of an old school BMW --think overgrown e39. Plus the local JLR dealer treats me way better than BMW ever did. At the end of the lease, I looked around and didn't find anything that I liked better. Dealers were (and still are) asking for ADMs on the new one so I decided to just buy out the lease and bide my time. But all roads are leading me straight back to another RRS. The Cayenne looks like a suppository, is less comfortable and is more expensive, the X5 is underwhelming with its overly assisted steering, uglified post facelift front-end and all touch screen climate controls and the Q7/8 just seem very outdated at this point. The Volvos also feel outdated at this point and I can't imagine spending 70k+ to get a 4 cylinder. I disagree on the base model RRS not being worth it. It comes with a bunch of stuff that is optional on an X5/Q7 so apples to apples its not as big a premium as you think (and all the extra stuff that come standard on the RRS like surround view, leather seats and adaptive cruise are stuff I would have to add to those cars anyway). Even the base model is still way better looking, more comfortable and just more enjoyable to drive than the German competition. I get that the ingenium is no B58, but I'd say its 90% as good (and way better than any of the VAG V6s used in Audis and Porsches). So yeah, I now understand why people continually go back to this brand even when they have issues....once you drive one its hard to go back to the Germans.

I own the P360 and have to disagree with the aspects related to it being "cheap" or the least desirable option. This one is easily the most bang for the buck AND give you EVERYTHING that's available in the next trim up at $7000 LESS ONLY ~40 horses and ~40lbft torque. If you think a 0.3 second reduction in time in an ultra smooth cruising SUV is worth it then hey, more power to you. Regarding the +30k engine option of the First Edition with the BMW engine, that's when you can about guarantee faults to come with that powertrain. Ultimately, I have a vehicle on the road that next to impossible to get as a result of the current market and it looks BEYOND amazing. The white interior as opposed to black seen here also adds to the opulence and esteem. The only other note I have as a point of correction is that the piano black is THE EXACT SAME through every trim of the vehicle.

FWIW, the last four JLR products I've owned (a 2015 RRS SVR, my wife's 2018 V8 RR, the 2020 Defender 110 she replaced it with, or the 2023 Defender 130 we've had for 6 months have been in the service department for anything but routine maintenance. Before that, sure, they were nightmares but they really haven't been the same since ditching the generations that were a hodgepodge of Ford, BMW, and other parts.

Jack, my compliments on doing a thoughtful job of defining tech terms like rear steer and I6 in the undercar segment for those who don't know them. It's obvious you took to heart that comment when you heard it in the AMA session. While I happened to know these bits, there will be others I don't, and the effort is appreciated.

I haven't verified this but I have a feeling that the infotainment/tech improvement might have something to do with TATA's ownership of JLR. Tata consulting services might have partly or fully developed those systems.

Tata has allowed the Brits to pretty much have it their way when it comes to configuration. But indeed, tech has always been a weak element at JLR.

All the German high performance SUVs are going 20-30% more than these "boutique" brands, and they are producing the shit out of them. At this price point, who would want those generic looking boats that show up at every corner... At least the British and Italian counterparts have character, and not a total abomination in design. Really hope Mark and Jack can review the F-Pace SVR before the 5.0L v8 goes away.

Well said. I switched from 2021 X6 40i to 2023 F-Pace SVR (after getting a 2023 F-Type between the SUV). The F-Pace is awesome. Jags have soul and great lines, the Germans cant touch with a 10 ft pole. Also, the interior on the F-Pace SVR is every bit the equal of the RRS and Velar, for lower price

I recently picked up a new Defender on air suspension. The adaptive shocks had an issue like they were stuck on full hard. The dealer wanted 6 weeks before they could look at it, a brand new car! No loan cars available. Basically they weren't helpful at all in trying to sort it out. I sold it after only a few weeks. I've heard parts are a VERY long wait and in some cases Land Rover are telling customers they have NO ETA on some parts. Have accident? You might be off the road for 6 months+. Lovely cars but I'd avoid them big time if you want to DRIVE a Land Rover as your daily.

cause that would utterly destroy the "SUVs give you lots of storage space for transporting stuff" argument. cause a VW passat station wagon has more storage space than this.

Great stuff per usual. Any chance you'll get to review the 7-seat Range Rover? As someone who's never owned a RR, the common narrative seems to be that reliability is awful (across their product line). However, I've met owners who have actually had good reliability experiences, and say that poor reputation isn't accurate. Any RR owners out there who want to chime in?
@jonathanboeckling8401
@jonathanboeckling8401 9 ай бұрын
You are correct. The reliability of a Range Rover is on par with, if not better than its German rivals. If routine maintenance is preformed, the vehicle will last. Service intervals are 2 years, 22,000 miles.
