Unfortunately, the sled prices are out of the stratosphere. The manufacturers need to get this in check. Most of these sleds are in the low to mid $20k + range. It's becoming a rich mans game, which will not bode well for the sport in the long run.
@CDX7

People keep saying this, but I see 650 Matryx for ~10k new here in MN. That’s an extremely capable sled, and way more than enough to have fun. Sure the top line sleds are stupidly expensive, but you don’t need a turbo XRS to enjoy the sport. Trucks, trailer, gas and oil, these have always been expensive. Snowmobiling has never been a cheap sport. But it’s still way more accessible than some people make it out to be.

@@dustinmorgan782the problem I’ve seen with used is it seems like nobody takes care of them. It’s so difficult to find a truly good used sled. I had 2 buddy’s stop riding after buying sleds with 3000 miles and both were money pits off the start. Both cases were lack of maintenance from the first owner. And neither sled was cheap. Around 7000 dollars a piece.

Real world sled of the year is the one that made it through the season with out breaking down or killing anyone. I used to buy a new one every year, not any more. I'll keep my 2023 Renny Xrs 900r turbo, no fancy display, no smart shocks, It has never broken down and it hasn't killed me.... yet lol, also its paid for, I f**king hate payments.

Love it keep it simple. The big fancy displays might be great for some people. For me it takes something special out of our sport the adventure of it all. Iv never used a gps riding sleds bikes or hunting. Somethings just better the simpler it is. My buddy always on his GPS its never really helped when needed. Few years ago we got to our destination but no gas and we all needed gas. Punched gas into his JPS takes up to some highway trail ended. So i found it the old fashioned way stopped ask for directions lol!! Another thing like u mentioned is shocks. Iv raced SX and pro XC iv had the best shocks u can buy. Iv also had high dollar shocks on trail sleds. Tell ya the truth set ur springs up coupling blocks if shocks r valved correctly u really don’t need anything fancy.

At the same time you are probably correct that there could be too categories under “real world”. Best overall and best value. That would give people looking for the flat out best a winner and the people that need to find a better value their option as well.

Spent a week in Yellowstone on my new 137 VR1 Boost with a bunch of buddies. I can confirm that all Boost sleds are not created equal. I got a good one, holy smoke! Three other turbos (two Boosts and a Doo) saw my tail lights all week. The only sleds that were faster were turbo Cats with mods. The 1100 (240hp) was a teeny bit faster and the Thundercat (270hp) was just plain faster. But my TOTALLY STOCK VR1 was so much stronger than the other sleds that I got accused of clutch kits and Bikeman reflashes etc etc. Sometimes you just get a good one.

I've been riding Ski-doo for 40 years now. I have three in my garage (01' MXZ 800 Adrenaline (strectched to 137), 12' GSX SE 800 (137) and 14' 600 Adrenaline Renagade) but, you think I am disapointed Doo did not win? Nope, I am just happy to be able to ride and this next season I am adding a Polaris Switchback 850...not the Assault, not the Turbo, just a plain Switchback. I have been wanting to hit the logging roads off our sled trails that are un-groomed. I have attempted this with the 12' and 14' but get stuck even with DS2 skis helping keep the front end up. The MXZ does better in deep snow because of the belly pan...anyway, it's the tip up rails on a 146 skid is why I am going to Polaris. I ride 80% on trail, but will be doing a little more off trail (logging roads, ATV trails) and I want a sled that will be capable of great trail manners but I can make a left turn onto a unridden road. Glad to hear you like the Assault....oh and value, lets say the old/new stock, because of a poor season is priced around $12K +/- 1k US prices. That's only $4K more than my 01' MXZ 800 Spring ordered back in Spring 2000.

Furthermore, if youd actually watched our videos and reviews on the Assault youd know we ordered it witih the 1.325 track and reviewed it from a trail sled perspective this year because we KNOW that a large number of people who buy them never take them off trail. Idk how u can talk about the Yamaha sidewinder and not mention the thundercat. The catalyst handled great with the right set of runners. I wouldn’t say ride is terrible but not the best. I believe its shock valving more than outdated suspension because its still one of the best XC racing skids in the business. Haven’t had enough time on Polaris to say much about them but i do ride with guys that had them and weren’t happy. One rode cat before his matrix loved his cat. Now he rides ski doo loves it idk what he didn’t like on polaris. Other guy was polaris for years now rides ski doo loves it. Im a cat guy so not talking ski doo up because thats what i ride. I do ride my fathers sometimes and do love the doo. The lynx i cant keep thinking if its so great why doesn’t anyone race XC with one. Maybe someone does must not be doing well never heard of them lol!! I do know a guy that races Cains quest had won it a few times. Always ran doo this year raced the lynx and rear suspension blew out of it DNF. Polaris has had more updates than any manufacturer seems like every year. But maybe there great riding sleds i just believe the snowmobile of the year shouldn’t have to go back for updates. The price we pay for sleds now the short winters i don’t want to miss a day of riding because my new sled is getting updates or broke down. I know ski doo Yamahas and cats r about bullet proof. I raced cats for 15 years SX pro XC many wins and podiums always finished my race except maybe 3 times. The one time I jetted lean blew up motor. Bad bearing other time and broke a front torque arm after 3 years of racing my 2012 sno pro. Have 2 Z1 turbo making up to 300 hp and there very reliable and durable machines. Anyway i new it would be a Polaris sled of the year. I truly believe it should of been cat with the new catalyst platform not because its the best ride or handling thats its the newest sled on the market no updates that i know of. Its a awsome sled specially if u ride hard just believe cat should of got the honor. Any other year if theres a new sled it always has lol!!

@pavmentsurfer13 8 ай бұрын
Theres alot to unpack here. Ill start at the end. We absolutely do NOT always pick the newest sled. We pick what our entire crew agrees is the best. We have, many times, passed the newest, flashiest sled by for something thats been around longer becuase the new sled wasnt as good. Our Sled of the year award isnt about whats newest. Thats why it actually matters in sea of other awards that literally DO just choose whatevers newest. Your stories about polaris riders could be matched 1 for 1 with stories of people who switch from any brand to another. I know a bunch of guys who switched from skidoo to polaris this past season and dont regret it one bit. Those stories are not proof that one brand is better. There are countless reasons people switch and everyone has their own preferences. We dont mention the thundercat because A: we didnt have one and B: we talked about the sidewinder and their are too close to need to talk about both. We also try to pick what we think is the best offering from each manufacturer for our competition And the thundercat is definitely not it from Cat. Dont know how much time you spent on a Catalyst, but I spent alot. And the rear end ride quality is well below the others. I agree some of it is a valving issue. But the Slide Action skidframe is well over 10 years old. Its time for an update. Trying to use racing as proof that a trail sled skidframe is good is like saying a race cars success is proof that the road version is the best. Racing does not directly translate to better on trail sleds. Durability, absolutely. But you said you raced sleds.... would you ever want to trail ride your race sled with the suspension set up for racing. I raced too... and I would NEVER want to do that. The reason you dont see Lynx sleds racing cross country is because Lynx hasnt invested in Cross Country racing as a company. Anyone would be free to buy one and race it of course. But the fact that no one has is no indication they arent a great sled. They absolutely ARE. And, if you look into how people ride in Scandanavia.... youll see that their trail rides are not much different than north american cross country races. its what lynx sleds were built for. Non of our Polaris sleds had to go back for updates this season. Not one. And we didnt have a single issue with any of them. (we had 7). yes, polaris has had recalls. But we ONLY report on our OWN experiences THIS SEASON. And THIS SEASON, our polaris's were flawless.

@@pavmentsurfer13 Just meant while referencing to the sidewinder bring up the thundercat at the same time. We both know there basically the same sled but believe it or not many people have no idea. U said really good things about the sidewinded lite how its not a pig when it comes to weight. How dependable it is just be nice to refer that to the thundercat. Its not like u guys haven’t had thundercats in the past. I don’t doubt ur decision of sled of the year being a Polaris like Iv mentioned I don’t have enough time on one to even compare. Lot of time on cats and doos haven’t rode a Polaris since 2019 850 AXIS. I didn’t like the ride or handling my cat was much better. That being said power was very impressive and it wasn’t my sled could of been all setup idk. Iv spent a lot of time on catalysts its definitely to stiff its as stiff as my last XC race sled 2017 ZR6000r XC. Stock runners sucked on my Dads catalysts after duel 6 inch runners its a weapon in the twisty’s and long fast sweeping turns. Even whooped out turns feels better than my Dads Doo 850. I know suspension is old so is the R motion. Slide action definitely isn’t as plush as the R motion slow speeds to moderate. But riding whooped out trails faster u go the slide action is good or better than anything iv ever rode eats bumps up. Catalyst front end also valved to stiff on soft setting. with the ATAC package anyway idk about other packages. Not saying that I don’t believe ur guys opinion just think it would of been nice to give the catalyst a little more attention. I know its not a 850 that hurts it for sled of the year doesn’t ride as well maybe as some sleds. Sorry but handling ill put it up against anything idk if its the best definitely great though. Catalyst is the newest thing out there my opinion best looking and very reliable. Cats not doing best in sales Yamaha on its way out cat could use a little more support from u guys. Specially way winters have been not helping sales people listen to what u guys say. Even if catalyst wasn’t top pick just a little more support good things to say would been nice. The way trails get here in upstate NY sometimes a race suspension is what u want lol!! One thing i have to mention is the lynx. U say how great it rides maybe it does never rode one. But later its mentioned that if maybe it had the R motion it would of helped for sled of the year. Was i hearing things right because if i did then the doo rides better kinda confused idk. Anyway thanks for getting back to me really appreciate it much respect. Thank you.

@@joshgessinger4509 Thanks for the reply man. Good to have a nice dialogue with someone for a change. Lol. I see what your saying about the Sidewinder/Thundercat. I guess in my position its easy to assume everyone knows theyre basically the same. Wont be a problem next year though, unfortunately. We didnt try different carbides on our catalyst this year but im sure we'll give it a try next year. I like how the catalyst handles, I like it better than a Skidoo... but in our collective opinions, its not better than a polaris. If you set up any sled wrong, its going to ride and handle like crap. I guess thats one of the problems with Arctic ATAC system. You cant tune it to anything other than their 3 settings. I rode our Catalyst this year on 50km seciton of rail bed that was just destroyed. Endless massive moguls. I was riding with 2 guys on XCRs and 2 guys on MXZ XRS's and all 4 of them could ride pretty much as fast as they wanted and keep the sled in control. The back end of the catalyst was let down big time by the front arm shock. It was bottoming so hard it was nearly launching me off the sled. didnt matter what setting I had the rear shock in... the front arm was the problem. I would like to see arctic cat include the front arm shock with ATAC or, at least give us a really high quality, fully adjustable front arm shock. I think this would help the slide action skidframe in a MASSIVE way. Im puzzled by your comments about giving the catalyst more attention. We did multiple stories on it this season and they were overwhelmingly positive. We love the catalyst. But its not perfect and unless we make a fuss about what needs to change, nothing will. We'll have lots more coverage of it next season but for this year check out all our other catalyst focused stories. Youll see we have a ton of good things to say about it.

Where is the zr8000RR? And the Thundercat or a zr9000 3 poos how unfair! And yet a Polaris wins! u expect a zr600 cat to catalyst to stand a chance?! The 858 catalyst is gunna be right there next year u watch!
@pavmentsurfer13
@pavmentsurfer13 8 ай бұрын
We didnt compare the 600 Catalyst as if it were an 850. We evaluated its power as a 600 in its class. These sleds dont actually compete against each other for this award. They are evaluated individually and their scores are compared after. And, we didnt have a ZR8000RR or a Thundercat or a ZR9000... so how could we evaluate them? But even if we did, the catalyst is a better sled in almost every way. So the outcome wouldnt have changed at all.

I bought 2 snow check machines, a VR1 and a Switchback in 2020, shortly later the machines were recalled, the sleds could blow-up. I took the sleds in for repair, fast forward 2 years, I received a "do not ride" notice. Now, 4 years later Polaris has not resolved the issue. I have asked for a refund or a safe replacement sled (s). Stay away, read everything on the web, lawsuits are coming, Polaris cannot handle the engineering.

I can relate to your comments on People make fun of the looks. Skidoo reassembling the Ninja Turtles, especially the mountain models. Polaris reassembling a Praying Mantis, Mosquito, bug-like with the Matryx. I have not heard too much about the Cat yet.

Ski-doo and lynx are the same sleds do not care what anyone says. If I showed up with a mustang with different rims/tires and tinted windows and shocks it is still a mustang even if I tune it different. Polaris is the ugliest sled on snow looks like it was cut from a sword of a child with crazy sharp angles. And dislike the seats on polaris, plus too much inside ski lift. Yamaha is comfy, reliable and looks great, doesn't handle as good and is heavy also. Arctic cat catalyst handles amazing, very light sled I am not fatigued at all riding it, plenty of power and love the ergonomics and for me it would be RAD then Yamaha then ski-doo then polaris and last lynx. All of this is opinion and none makes it anyone else's sled of the year and that is awesome! Everyone has different likes and I appreciate You guys sharing yours with us and putting in the work you do! Thank you so much guys! I hope we have more snow next season but until then I am gearing up for dirttrax TV Lets Go!!

Thanks for your comments man. Your right, we all have our own opinions and, we all have things we prefer about a snowmonbile. I cant fault you for your perferences, as long as your out riding and having fun, thats all I care about. However, your comments about Lynx VS Skidoo are dead wrong. They are absolutely NOT the same. They dont ride the same, they dont handle the same and the feel completely different on the snow. You dont have to believe me. But everyone here at snowtrax agrees with this %100... as does every person weve taken riding and swapped back and forth between the 2.

I have only ever owned Polaris and had good luck with them. However, I do like SkiDoo sleds and wouldn't hesitate to own one. Although I like SkiDoo machines, SkiDoo loyalists are the absolute worst. Brand loyalists can all be over opinionated but some Doo loyalists are just cry babies. So to you hardcore Doo enthusiasts, just want to say..........HAHA!!

it's very dissapointing that all the content creators in the sled market all fixate on the biggest,baddest sleds when there are thousands of guys looking to get into the sport within a modest budget.i'm 57 and have decided to jump in instead of tracking my side by side when i bought on lakefront.there's nothing out there on entry level full size snowmobiles.even the big 3 are guilty of it.they push the turbo mountain sleds and completely ignore the entry level trail machines.it's making it extremely hard to research the right sled for me.

Yeah. that was all about my bias because polaris sends me a personal cheque each month. I love it that the skidoo wins one year, but were still biased because the polaris wins another year. The year the skidoo won, all the polaris guys said we were biased. Truthfully, non of us care about comments like this. Skidoo and polaris BOTH pay us. It doenst benefit us one way or the other to choose one over the other. Cat is the same. They are a customer of ours just like Skidoo and Polaris.

Whats the point of reviewing something if it gets changed the next year? Rating a '24 doo comp for anyone looking to buy a new 25 is a waste, considering its a new sled with a different front end. Lol these rankings are only for people that have already bought the sled yo compare with one another, and lets jist put it out there, most are already happy with what they bought. Id rather see a review of next years models before i spring order, too bad manufacturers wont let reviewers try and release their opinions prior to ordering.

You just answered your own question. We dont get access to next years stuff till the very end of the season. And, why would you ever trust an award given to a sled we'd only ridden a few times. We do our Sled of the Year award at the end of the season so we can piut a full season of riding on it to make sure our opinions are based on actual miles ridden. Not just hype. Anyone who pics a sled of the year at the beginning of the season has no where near enough time on it to know if it really IS the best or not. We have no control over what the manufacturers do with their sleds each year. But we think its interesting to know what sleds stood out to us each season. And, countless people tell us year after year that our sled of the year awards help them choose what used sled to buy later on. its not a perfect system. But its the best one we have.

At the end of the day you guys are Polaris fan bois and are 100% bias to that brand. Only reason you even mention lynx an Skidoo is your Canadian and need to talk about Canadian products. Arctic cat and Yama cat still win more races then the rest still handle better and are far more bang for the buck. An let's face it they look better.

Huh... i kindof feel like ignoring this. But then.... I just have to ask. Why are you even here? Why do you watch our videos? You do know that skidoo has won our sled of the year award countless times right. And when they did, all the polaris guys said we were biased. The truth is, we cant win either way and we dont care. Believe it or not, we are paid by ALL 4 manufacturers. Not just polaris. Skidoo doenst like it when we pick polaris. And polaris doesnt like it when we pick skidoo... and arctic cat doesnt like it when we pick anything but an arctic cat. If we let the support we get from the manufacturers influence what we pick, we'd have to have a 3 way tie every year. Do you really base your opinions about what sled is better on what sled wins the most races? REALLY? Do you judge what car is better based on what wins the most Nascar races? Or what streetbike is better based on what wins the most GP races? Even IF you do, your logic is flawed because you said arctic cat and yamaha win the most races. What races are we talking about? Skidoo wins the most in snowcross. So it cant be that... and Yamaha hasnt raced anything in years.

Yup... its because they pay me personally for my opinion. Get over it man. We couldnt care less about people thinking were biased. The scores we used to select the winner came from a long list of people and we all have tons of miles on ALL these sleds. Ridden back to back, day after day. Our opinions are based on real world experience and direct, back to back comparison. Being called biased by someone who picked a specific brand because they themselves are biased doesnt mean much.
