I’m in zone 8b. Grew my first raised bed dahlias from seed in full sun. My set up is morning sun, mid day full sun, then evening semi shade. I started the seeds in trays, planted them out in my raised bed. Only problem I had was powdery mildew in late season. The dahlias grew from 5 to 8 foot tall. Big beautiful blooms in all colors. These weren’t fussy plants, they just grew and bloomed beautifully. I’m planting even more this year! Easiest garden plant I’ve ever grow. The seed dahlias outperformed the tuber dahlias

You’ve inspired me to try dahlias again. Grew from seed years ago when I didn’t really know what I was doing lol but was able to grow a few. Am going to try pots instead of the ground for all the reasons you mentioned (am in Mesquite). Love having another gardener in the metroplex to follow!

This was perfect timing! I just got my Dahlia order from Floret Flower Farm (the new and greatest seeds) so this was very helpful. I sowed the seeds 3 days ago and no sign of seedlings, but I'm told they take a while. I also planted coleus; and they're taking forever. I'm told not to plant seeds too early because the plants actually want to be outside. Oh well, guess I'll see what happens and learn from it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I have both. But when digging up tubers lost the lot despite following storage tips. The seeds are amazing and sprouted decent tubers which I have left in ground. I think it is the latter that is why success it’s on a slope but doesn’t get water logged. My tip is picking the flowers for indoors is less effective but I’m only a home gardener. But I have a great show of colours collected mass of seeds and recently planted a heap all have germinated can’t wait to see the result

For the first time last year I tried dahlias and it was the unwins mix. It was a ferry Morse seed packet (from lowes) and I had good success from it. They were a shorter variety and mostly single blooms (not what most people want or expect from dahlias), however they were beautiful and I was able to store the tubers from those plants. I think it’s cool that I now have my own tubers from a 1.80 seed packet. Excited to see how they do this year!

Congratulations on choosing dahlias from seed. I hope it goes as good for you as it did for me. I, too, am a little like you in "only the strong survive, or get my attention!" That means in my zone 7, Maryland, I don't dig them. Each year about the beginning of May, most have come back but....this year has been pretty wet so I'm concerned I'm going to lose some tubers and some of my seeded dahlias. But in concert with your thinking, I'm just going to sow more than I need and if I have to give some away, who wouldn't love that! Also I did grab some seeds from my seeded dahlias and I'm curious to see what they look like! I'm jealous of how much you've been able to start but Feb will be here sooner than I think!!

I think the grow bags are a great idea so you can move them around. This year I planted 3 dahlias in pots and brought them into the basement for the winter. For the first time, it looks like the tubers will be OK. In the past when I tried digging tubers, they got moldy and rotted. I also left 2 dahlias in the ground (zone 5) and covered them with extra soil and some hay. We'll see if they survive.

I live in zone 8ish/9 in South America, I've also struggled with dahlias, they always rot when I planted straight in the soil (I have sandy soil and in a hill area), last Spring I tried planting a bulb in one of those plastic air pruning root pots, I put the pot in my garden bed, surrounding it by gladioli and only one drip on the side of the pot (at garden bed soil level) so the soil wicks what it needs... and I finally got beautiful flowers! I don't know if the plant is going to get as tall as it would be if it were in the ground but who knows, maybe a root will find its way down the draining holes, so far, it's the middle of summer and the Dahlia is bushy and full of flowers!

I have three dahlia tubers coming to me at the end of the month, but I went ahead and sowed a few dahlia pompon seeds indoors a few days ago. For funsies, because this is my first growing season and I'm a newbie at gardening. I'm in zone 8b and I'm probably going into this too early, but I just wanted to see if I could do it. The seeds just germinated, and I'm like "now what?". I sowed four in one shallow yogurt cup.

I'm getting ready to start my dahlia seeds for 2025. I'm curious how did it go for you in 2024 with the seed dahlia? I have started them from seed before successfully, but I then went to tubers which ended up being a big pain. it was a lot of work to force them. The perennial ones came in later along with the heat and didn't do well. The forced ones gave me beautiful flowers briefly before the heat just wore them down. Then came the spider mites. Then they tried to bloom again in the late fall, but by then I was too exhausted to even deal with them. If I tried them again, I would have to give them shade baby them a lot more, not give up on them in the summer lol. so I am interested in expanding growing them from seed. I am TX zone 8b.
@shesamadgardener2 күн бұрын
They did well! I ended up potting them up the a larger 4” pot as they grew and then finally got them planted outside by April. They did well as I placed them in an area that received afternoon shade. The flowers ended up being super cute and sweet but not very big. I cut from them multiple times. I also left the tubers in the ground over winter so we will see if they come back/
@drhappyplants2 күн бұрын
@ that's good news! I remember putting some seed Dahlias in various places in 2023 and come to think of it the ones that thrived were in part shade areas on drip. The ones in full sun containers didn't fare well. This year I'm going to grow some giant varieties as well as the Unwins bedding type; in 3-5 gallon containers for a bank of dahlia containers along my greenhouse, which gives shade in the afternoon. Let's see how it goes ☺️

I saw a video that said Dahlias were sensitive about being transplanted, so it's best to plant them in Peat Pots so you can just move them into the garden or pot without disturbing their roots. Have you found that to be true in your experience?

The biggest problem with Dahlias not blooming is that they don't want a lot of nitrogen. I feed my dahlias with bulb food after an initial growth period of feeding them with a balanced fertilizer.
