Nothing compares like preparing a bed for seeds, seedlings or bulbs and tubers. It is hard work, good planning and preparation but so worth it. Dear Jacques, I wanted to tell you how much i love your channel. Second, I come from Bratislava/Slovakia/Europe. After the WWII a lot of Bulgarian people had come to my town. Thay bought gardens and sell really yummy fruits and vegetables on the markets. So since those time all the "old" people from my town, including me, are buying and calling čubrica, čubrica, it has just stayed in out jargon. And yes! I have one on my balcony. Could you please give us some recepcie with čubrica? That would be awesome. Thank you. Love your channel. XX

I love it! In english the plant is called "summer savory" and growing up one of my favorites uses for dried cubrica was sprinkling it over buttered toast. We like adding it to bean and lentil dishes and generally I add it to savory dishes that you would use thyme or oregano in.

I’ve grown dahlias all my gardening life. About forty five years. They are not the easiest flowers to grow. They need the right amount of water . You underwater they dry up you overwater the tubers rot. You have to pinch the plants to get bushier plants. Staking is also needed to keep them from flopping over. They are also susceptible to diseases. One year I had to get rid of all my dahlias,about fifty plants because they all got a fungus. So I had to replace them all. If you live in an area that has cold winters you have to dig them out and store them. If everything goes well you’ll have beautiful dahlias.
@jacquesinthegarden Жыл бұрын
They are definitely more of commitment than all the other annual flowers I grow but I love the giant blooms!

We planted just one city light lavender pink dahlia from a nursery pot in early April in North Carolina. After the 4 blooms died off, the plant grew wider and wider with no new blooms but lots of green leaves. Filling up the spaces in our butterfly garden. Don't know if we should trim back some of the green leaves or wait and see what happens. It is now early summer and temperatures have reached 85-90 degrees on some days. What do you think we should do? We are fearful it might take up too much space. Thanks

This was a SUPER helpful video! I love dahlias but I've been intimidated to try to grow them because I had no idea how to start and I haven't really grown anything that's a bulb or tuber before. Any suggestions for sourcing dahlias in San Diego? I know Briggs in Vista/San Marcos has some beautiful dahlias (or they did last year).
@jacquesinthegarden Жыл бұрын
Usually nurseries have them for some period of time and I wouldn't be surprised if they still had some. Otherwise they usually have mature plants at nurseries that you can replant. Then if you want you can collect tubers when it dies back in the winter or just trim back and let it overwinter. The one I show in the container is one I left there from last year to just sit until it came up again in early spring!

You can stake them if you want to keep them going! If you cut them now they might still be able to bloom, depending on how warm your area is, but if its soon to get cold they will be unlikely to flower.
