Thinking about start doing this once I get the money to purchase the trailer and dump. I’m 17 and work masonry laying brick on Wednesday Friday and Saturday because I’m homeschooled but go to a place to get my assignments the other days. I would like to do this after school or Saturdays. I have done something close to this. My math teacher runs one of these small companies with dump trailers. But he and a team Loads the trash. And I don’t want to step anyones toes starting a similar side hussle with my ram 2500.

I know a fella down the road that has been doing this 4 or 5 years now. He’s doing good with it. Only issue, the landfill sometimes gets on him for having mixed waste like steel and wood. They want it separated. The landfill doesn’t hassle the big operators about it, but they do with this guy.

When the big companies come in with their large roll offs and trash trucks, they just dump & leave. The smaller independent guys, and the general public the landfill wants the materials separated. Steel, wood, mattresses, etc. The purpose is to keep the “recyclables “ out of the landfill. I guess the county figures the big companies have no control over what their customers put in the dumpsters ?

I agree. I had a roll-off business (10, 13, 15, and 20 yard containers). When the dump fees are doubled real quick and fuel prices are high, you really notice it. And all the competitors do low-balling...Then you had to have commercial insurance and general liability insurance. And so on.

If you start doing this long enough in NY your going to eventually meet a guy thats going to let you know that he's going to be your new business partner. @TheRogers1873 жыл бұрын
So how do you do the drop off and pickups for 1 dumpster for 1 day? Do you give the customer a full 24hours with the dumpster? So like Monday you drop it off at 7am and then pick it up at 7am on Tuesday. But if you have someone that wants it Tuesday you still have to go dump it before you get it to them. By the time Saturday comes you would be dropping a one day off at like 2-3 pm. This is just saying you only have 1 dumpster and 6 different people want it for one day. Sorry so long just wandering very interested in starting something up in Indiana.

How much did you pay for the roll off trailer and dumpster!? What brand is it?
@erictulchin23173 жыл бұрын
By all rights you are a motor carrier and that makes you subjected to DOT what kind of carrier number are you using to operate your business. Granted they are your dumpsters but you rent them out the means you are a transportation company and I'm sure you need $1,000,000 liability policy for insurance

Yes on the insurance, yes on the DOT. I have magnets that have my number on it. We picked this load up right y my house so I forgot to slap them on the truck.

How do you charge for the dump fees? Do you add it to price of dumpster rental fee are send a separate bill for dump fee?
@OldSchoolElectronics3 жыл бұрын
You don't charge for the dump fee. The customer pays one price; that includes the dump fee. You have the customer sign a contract when you arrive to drop the container saying he/she will be liable for overweight charges. This is different for each size container. Best case scenario: the container is almost empty or half full when you pick it up. I had a few that were completely empty, but this was rare.
