Lots of great improvements with the ‘24 gassers including the transmission. But I’ve been happy with smoothness of the 6L90 in my ‘23 and the way the tow-haul mode is calibrated.

Nice video. I have my opinions of how this is going to compare to the current 6 speed, which I have in a 2022 model. Im thinking empty, normal driving won’t be much of a noticeable difference but passing power and especially towing grades will be a huge difference. I’m really interested to see some towing test with these new trucks. I’ve said it in other videos of yours but I always feel the 6 speed needs another gear between 2nd and 3rd, and with this 10 speed it will essentially have 2 between those comparable ratios. I’m not really complaining with my 6 speed, just giving my honest real world opinion after 23,000 miles of usage with a pretty good amount of towing an 8.5’x24’ enclosed car trailer from East Ky through Southwest Va to East Tn. It’s all curves and grades and I think one grade in particular (8% that goes over the mountain that is the Ky/Va state border) will be a huge difference with the 10 speed.

I guess it's worth a shot I have a 2011 2500hd gmc gas c6 transmission replaced at 218.000 miles ,not happy with towing 8 mpg ,

Joe what is your take on the "oil consumption problem" some people have w/the L8T? Have you seen it from your fleet customers? Do you think it's a valid concern? Its hard to weed through the internet and figure out if it's super rare, a result of going too long between oi l changes, or an actual concern. Appreciate your thoughts and videos!

It’s a valid question! I towed my gooseneck about 10,000 miles over a 4 month period with a new 2020 6.6 HD gas. That particular truck did not burn oil. It was flawless. However, I did have a fleet customer receive a new 6.6 gas engine after 6,000 miles due to excessive oil consumption. With that said, since the 6.6 gas came out in 2020…I’ve sold a significant number of these…dump trucks, stake bodies, service bodies, box trucks, low cab forward Chevy & Isuzu NPR…the percentage of these that came in for an oil consumption concern is minimal. I always encourage my customers to call me immediately if they have any concerns about their purchase. So far the 6.6 gas has been trouble free overall. I have several fleets that have bought multiple units each year. Inevitably there will be some failures. My issue is the engineering team sometimes has an unrealistic margin of error for acceptable oil consumption.

Do they not have a Gear display. In comparison, in the cluster of my Ram I can see what gear it is in. Just curious.

Major flaw…even in the “L” mode so you can tap shift… it doesn’t automatically shift itself. That’s why I like the Derringer in my diesel… I can at least see what gear I am in and if the torque converter is locked.

How they could create the digital gauge cluster and then completely miss the ball and not show which gear its in at all times and torque lockup status ... in a WORK truck no less !. I also have to wonder why they didn't program the TCM to have skip shifting under lighter throttle and progressively add the gears as the throttle/load is increased. All the information is there in the system to read out the gear display and tq lockup, I'd like to hear the GM's engineering department explain this goofup as its been talked about for years now as an item drivers want to be able to read if they so choose.

Totally agree… Drives me crazy that it won’t show you what gear you’re actually in… At least offer that if you’re in tow haul mode. On my 2021 diesel I added the Banks Derringer which shows me what gear I am in and if torque converter is locked up.

@@truckguyjoe Which brings up the question, will GM claim that is an "out" to a warranty issue because someone has an engine monitor mounted in the truck, even if there is no performance gadget in addition plugged into the system.

Seems like a lot of unnecessary shifting all within 500rpm. I’ve been very happy with my 6L90 in my 22. I for sure don’t feel like I’m losing out. But I also will never tow at the limits of my truck so there’s that too.

Really the best reason for this many gears is that it makes multiple axle gearing choices a thing of the past. If you need to be at a certain RPM then it can easily hit that target and make the best use of power without creating unnecessary heat by over revving.

@@Icutmetal enlighten everyone. There are many reasons why they are good. I only touched on how it can affect final axle ratios. I wasn't trying to write an exhaustive thesis on the pros and cons of additional transmission gears.

I listened carefully and it sounds like your trans also Whines around the 5th and 6th gearing… my 2024 6.6 gas 10 spd whines quite abit during those two gears. Do you notice whining under lighter throttle?

I towed a gooseneck multiple times with a 2020 6.6 gas 6 speed. It handled the weight pretty well. The 10 speed should improve towing performance at highway speed.
