If they gave it the FA24 2.4l N/A motor from the BRZ and gave it a 6 speed box, it would be worthy of that RS title

@@subterraneanguitartech Just curious why, when you could buy a WRX? I can't figure out why they would build something like that when most people who are interested in something like that would either go WRX or BRZ/GR86. Or are you looking for something naturally aspirated that's also AWD?

Honestly, just a 6 speed would make it worthwhile. Subaru's CVT is GARBAGE. There's literally nothing good I can say about it, and I say that as someone who owns a car with their CVT. I'd honestly take a hit in MPG happily for a swap to a standard automatic or better yet a manual.

@@thegiant17 My dad has a '19 3.6R Touring. and i love its high torque CVT automatic.. on the highway. attempt to do any high performance driving and it falls apart. But it does get pretty good fuel economy. It is not a performance car transmission in the slightest. If the RS had the WRX's SPT transmission.. maybe it would be a bit better. I really think it needs a 6 speed tho.

I had a similar impression of this car. I felt that it really needed perhaps a revised version of the BRZ engine making ~220 HP. Not sure how many of you remember, but in 2009 Subaru had basically three performance Imprezas. The WRX and STI of course, but also the "Impreza 2.5GT". It had the old WRX's 220 or so HP whereas the incoming WRX jumped to 265. I think that rather than going with a 180HP 2.4RS, they could have had a 2.4GT. I suspect it would sell vastly better in this configuration rather than as it is now. The WRX base can be had AT MSRP (or less) for about $31,000. I negotiated a Premium with keyless entry, STI short throw and the bigger screen for only about $32,000 despite MSRP being $34,000. That makes a WRX Premium only about $3,000 more than the Impreza RS. For that $3,000, I gained 80lb/ft of torque and 90 HORSEPOWER, as well as a true performance car suspension setup. If there was a 220HP Impreza 2.4GT available in auto and manual for $29,000, I suspect it would start eating into Civic Si sales in no time. Subaru already has an N/A 4cyl that can make over 200HP with an excellent powerband. Had they used such a design for a sport compact, it would be a game changer in today's market. As is, if you MUST have a hatch, the Crosstrek is the better choice, as it's available with the same engine for not really more money, and has the benefit of offroad-capable ground clearance.

I've been thinking about this and how putting the WRX engine in stuff like the Crosstrek or the Forester would be such an easy slam dunk that there must be some reason they're not doing it.... then I saw the WRX gets EPA rating of 21mpg avg. I almost guarantee the only reason they're not putting it in other cars is because of fleet average MPG laws... that being said I honestly think they should scrap the sedan WRX and use the hatch body instead, they're going for the utilitarian look anyways might as well make it actually useful

@@robob221 that's nonsense. A FWD car with dedicated winter tires will handle snow/ice better than an AWD car on all seasons. I grew up in Western Michigan with lake effect snow and did just fine without AWD.
@robob221
@robob221 Жыл бұрын
@@tylerrynberg I am not down playing the ability of winters tires, what I am saying is that if the rear wheels can drive you will have more control in snow and rain, that is physics. This is not an argument, winter tires are absolutely necessary on FWD when you want to get home in confidence for a reason, not the case for AWD. I am contemplating the importance of full time AWD myself as I am cross shopping a Mazda 3 awd, Impreza RS, and civic SI. I only get snow 30-60 days out of the year so for the most part, rain is really the enemy for spirited driving. That's where AWD shows its strength when you turn the wheel and accelerate. Other than that, the "on demand" system in the Mazda may be a great middle ground.
@KG-kq9tk
@KG-kq9tk 28 күн бұрын
@robob221. "That's physics". Bro, you are so fundamentally wrong about this, yet so confident. AWD helps with getting power to all 4 wheels, but that has ZERO to do with traction or stopping power. Lookup any number of countless articles abd videos explaining the actual physics of this. TIRES are what matter, overwhelmingly, for winter driving. Because they are the point of contact on the slippery road. Front and back wheel drive cars with winter tires are absolutely safer in slippery conditions than any AWD vehicle not using winter tires. That AWD drive means nothing when trying to grip the road or come to a stop with tires that literally can't grip the road nearly as well. AWD helps in deeper snow or sand to accelerate or get over obstacles. It helps with overall handling. But tires are what REALLY matter for gripping. You are right that this is not an argument, but you are the one who is losing that argument. Its physics.

Test drove the 2L back in 2021. It had sufficient power, but the seatback was not agreeable to my back. I've been eyeing the Impreza since 2011, but never got one. It was always slow, had oil consumption issue back in 2012, and always a compromise. Unless they come out with a good PHEV or EV, it will never happen.

I mean, depends on what you want. Not everyone wants a fast car. If you want a subaru with a hatchback and something that is practical and good on gas, this is a good option. As normally, the impreza is pretty underpowered, this does give it a boost. Plus it is a whole lot more comfortable than a wrx. So I wouldn't call it useless.

Subaru’s CVT addiction is holding the company back badly… It’s destroying it
@hhaste
@hhaste Жыл бұрын
That's just not even close to true. I dislike CVT's as much as the next person but "destroying" it? lol.. I think they know what's best for their company more than you would. The fuel economy with a CVT beats the manual transmission. It has less weight without that heavy gearset and all those extra parts, a CVT has less mass, which helps fuel economy, handling, and acceleration. It's the perfect for for these cheap, everyday consumer cars. a 6 speed doesn't make any sense in a car like this. If someone wants anything else, they'll buy the WRX with the 6 speed.

I feel the same. I own a gen 3 2008 Impreza Sport 2.5i Manual 5Dr hatchback (170HP) and a 2021 STi base model Sedan (310 HP). I kept the 2008 hatch because it's very practical for the space in the trunk (for example if I go to Ikea or I need to pick up bulky stuff) while still being fun to drive with the manual 5 speed and a 2.5 liter N/A 4 cyl. The STI is a blast in comparison to the 2.5i, but I don't want to drive the STI too often in the salty rustbelt during winter time and the sedan trunk is really not as practical, so I'm keeping the 2008 2.5i Hatch for winter and for transporting bulky stuff. I wish they had made the 2024 RS with a manual transmisson... at the very least a 5 speed if not a 6 speed. I'm thinking the 182 HP of the 2024 RS must feel quite anemic with a CVT transmission.

I have had it with Subaru. They are using the RS badge to imply this vehicle is something that it's not. They stripped the Forester of the turbo and put one in the most feminine machine they make. They put the sport label on the Forester after adding tacky red accents. They took away a proper WRX in place of some ugly new model that no one likes which is why they are heavily discounted now. The got rid of the wrx sti hatchback but have the nerve to give us this trash which is nothing more than a basic Impreza with black wheels and badges. As a prior XT Forester owner(yes with a CVT which I gave into)...I have never gone back to Subaru since their decision to scrap the turbo and don't be fooled they toned down their awd programming to protect their CVT rather than strengthen the CVT itself. This is why their awd is no longer any good. If you watch all the independent testing done it's pretty obvious.

I like the hatch styling. But I could never see myself owning a modern Subaru except for the BRZ. The CVT route is a bad choice in my opinion. I feel like they're doing it mostly to try and bump up their fuel economy numbers without developing a more efficient engine, or a transmission with more gears. I like the screen, but also seems a bit busy and lack of physical buttons is disappointing. Interior otherwise is ok. I personally believe most common folks only buy Subaru these days for the name. Most think because they're in a "Subaru" they're safer and can tackle any weather and conditions. I can't really see why you'd choose this over the loads of other cars out there.
