I will never understand how playmates messes up the most simple reissues. Literally just re-issue the classic stuff. It’s not hard. Downsizing playsets that don’t even end up compatible with your own figures is the weirdest thing to me. If the vintage one wasn’t so expensive to get, I would cancel my preorder. Well playmates is maybe the only toy company that owns their own warehouse so that's why we are lucky enough to see original re releases. BUT they had a major fire way back in the day and a lot of molds were lost. Was never disclosed what but a lot of people think this was one of the things lost in the fire. I had no idea but valaverse put into perspective just how fucking big the original mold was for this thing even for just one major piece of it. So if it was lost in the fire let's all be glad they at least did this. If you haven't seen the real thing in 30 years like me your brain isn't going to no any better unless you let the Internet wreck it for you.

So maybe there were cost constraints or maybe the modern equipment couldn't handle a mold that big since they don't make stuff like this anymore. Other good things are the parts can't be cannibalized to complete a vintage one. And yeah there are 2 points to that argument also it sucks for the guy trying to complete his old drome but now people can't pass off vintage stuff with remade parts on eBay. Like I say pit it on your shelf and just enjoy it. Be happy it exists. I would prefer the real thing too but to that I say there is always eBay. Don't want to shell out the dough then here you go.

They couldve went for the Sewer Lair which people wouldve been good with as well and they dont have to worry about costs on making huge molds. Would it really have been that difficult to charge an extra 10 to 15 bucks and make a reissue that wasn't undersized so that the play features would actually work? I certainly would have bought one, but as soon as I found out that it was undersized it was an easy pass. I swear, I will never understand some of the decisions that Playmates makes with the vintage reissue stuff. It's like sometimes they're their own worst enemy. I WANT to give you money Playmates. Why don't you like money?

I totally agree. I haven't been buying the reissues, because they've removed like 90% of the paint. And don't get me started on the remastered turtles, or whatever they're called. Swapped heads, and weird pimple skin. They are truly masters of disappointment.

Yes, I agree. I'd also be willing to pay a few extra bucks for their reissue TMNT figures if they were the same quality plastic and paint as the original. Though what we get is real cheap. Though I buy them mostly for the weapons.

My problem is, I always felt like even the Vintage one was ever so slightly undersized, and if it was about 10-15 percent bugger it wouldnhave been perfect. THIS however is the exact opposite, they shrank it by about 10 percent 💀

Wow, can't believe they dropped the ball this bad. I was waiting for a review before I made a decision to buy this thing and I am glad I did. Why would they not recreate the scale 1:1? Blows my mind. So many kids did not get to have this growing up (including myself) who as adults now can afford it. Very sad.

Great review. Just an FYI - The front black door/panel of the technodrome is installed incorrectly. The vents should be convex but you have them concave. If its installed convex it'll allow the door/panel to open up all the way out.

Appreciate the tear down, it definitely is a damn shame that they shrank everything. it does look hilarious seeing the figures trying to maneuver around and thinking of the holy grail of toys, the final levels of video games, the big playset that eluded me as a kid being this smaller thing, but as im just going for a collection of boxed toys from my childhood i dont open, this isn't a deal breaker. Maybe when Super7 makes a real version for 400$ thats proper size ill breakdown and buy one that ill open and display

Thanks for the honest review, I knew something was off the minute you unboxed it - the original was massive and a toy you dreamed of owning as a kid. A friend of mine had one and it was a blast playing with it all those years ago - this thing is in all likelihood about 35% smaller and just made for the 'in box', 'collector/hoarder'. Surprised that these toy companies don't think about scaling - Super7 released an overpriced party wagon that's too big for their own line of figures and you have Playmates here releasing a Technodrome that's too small for their own lineup.

Good, detailed review! Thanks for that. I was really hoping to finally see someone compare this with the original since all the collectors I know have been whining about the size and saying it's smaller than the OG. The thing about the OG is that it was never really the right size to begin with. I'm assuming the problem is with the areas where the figures are supposed to sit inside, or things like Krangs little bunghole mount? The overall scale looks about the same if not the very same as the OG to me. Thanks!

Looks like a sticker is missing. There is supposed to be slime pit in the front part. The red disk is actually from the cartoon, as a kind of force field trap door where each wedge gets removed. It is a bit like a pizza coincidentally I preordered this even though I have the original and display it. I got a new shelf my TMNT collection so I'm hoping this could fill the space as a backdrop. I think for a lot of fans it will work as a display piece. Even just next to the Neca figures, the nostalgic connection is there. I liked that you tried some alternatives to the playmates figures like the reaction figures. So its basicly a 1/18th scale technodrome, as someone with a lot of figures in that scale that is exciting. This was probably cheaper to produce for playmates at this reduced size, at least the vintage market is protected because you can't really pass it off as the original. Going to display the 52toys beastbox Turtles in there. They are five inch figures but their Flexible.

I'm really torn on this toy. I have the original, and even at the original size, it's a shitty, shitty playset. Look up the pics from the original package. They took the legs off the figures to get them to sit in those seats. But I feel like I have to buy this to support the line. And it's not like they're going to ever release this again. Disappointing to say the least. BUT for almost 1/4 of the price of what you’d have to fork out for an OG, this will more than serve its purpose for me. I wish you hadn’t shown how well those 3.75 figures work! That’s going to be a tough battle to fight to want to hunt them down.
