This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander hybrids including the base hybrid and HybridMax. The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander hybrids include two powertrains, the 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid matched to an ECVT, a combined 243 horsepower. Standard electronic on demand AWD in Canada. FWD and AWD options are available in the US. The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max with a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 6-speed automatic transmission, a combined 362 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, standard full-time electronic AWD. You can put regular fuel in the Grand Highlander.
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander offers 8” of ground clearance and it has an attractive exterior design which is inspired by the Highlander shape. The bold grille is a standout on the road reminds me a bit of Lexus, the low hood line is great for visibility, the doors are large making it easy to load and unload children and items in and out of the vehicle and the rear is simple yet sophisticated looking. The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max model has unique bumpers, black accented two-tone wheels and exposed dual exhaust tips. The Grand Highlander has standard roof rails, a black grille, 18” wheels, available 20” and a temporary spare tire. Limited gas and hybrid models also come standard with power folding mirrors and LED fog lights.
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander offers a spacious interior , it has a wider track and longer wheelbase than the Highlander and seats up to 8-passengers. It has clever storage areas throughout the cabin and the 12.3” touchscreen is easy to access. The centre stack features a wireless charger, three cupholders, one that can hold a large water bottle.
In Canada, a black interior is offered on the gas and hybrid models, the Hybrid Max gets black or Portobello. In the US, black or light grey is available on the XLE and Limited models and Platinum models get Portobello, light grey and black. Limited gas and hybrid models add a 12.3” digital driver display, panoramic view monitor, 11-speaker JBL sound system, panoramic sunroof, leather trimmed seating, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats, 7-passenger seating with captain’s chairs, heated second row seats, ambient lighting and a hands-free power tailgate.
In the US, heated rear seats are standard on the Limited trims but the panoramic sunroof and panoramic view monitor are only available on the Platinum models. Exclusive to Hybrid Max is ultra-suede and leather trimmed upholstery with bronze coloured accents throughout the cabin. This trim also adds heated and ventilated second row seats, paddle shifters, dial multi-terrain select, a head-up display, puddle lamps and a digital rear-view mirror.
Fuel economy for the 2.5L hybrid is
6.5L/100 km city 36 MPG city
7.3L/100 km highway 32 MPG highway
The Hybrid Max is
9L/100 km city 26 MPG city
8.7L/100 km highway 27 MPG highway
The gas and Hybrid Max models can tow 5,000 pounds and the 2.5L Hybrid 3500 pounds.
The price in Canada is

Limited Hybrid $64,570 CAD
Platinum Hybrid Max $68,830 CAD
The price in the US is

IMO, the Grand Highlander is what the Highlander always should have been. So it's good to finally have it. I now think of the regular Highlander as the "Grand RAV4." lol
@springertube
@springertube Жыл бұрын
Disagree...While you're right about the "Grand RAV4" idea positionally, the RAV and "regular" Highlander are quite different, and the latter I think still has an important place conceptually in the lineup. (It IS due a re-design or strong refresh). This (GL) looks great for those needing the larger size (and I'm recommending as a must-try to my qualifying family members), not nearly everyone does "qualify," but neither is the RAV the right choice for them. The (for now?) "tweener" Highlander has been a just-right size, will remain easier to negotiate crowded streets and parking lots and nicely shorter for parking garages, especially with the factory roof rack...as well as still representing a huge step up in refinement and comfort from the RAV4--with much more luxe feel, quieter and usefully larger for extra elbow room and passenger/luggage space and/or just needing an occasional use 3rd row. It remains the perfect empty (or new) nester choice; people for whom the GL will be just too much--more than they need or want, but still wanting more space and refinement over the RAV. The RAV4/Venza and 'regular' Highlander remain apples & oranges choices. The "regular" Highlander (again, for now?) is all-of-a-sudden Toyota's answer to the Sorento/Santa Fe twins--not a bad thing--which do similar tweener duty for the Koreans. If Toyota axes the Highlander because of the GL, and I don't think they necessarily should... I'd highly recommend they up their RAV4 game considerably to fill the gap, if not with 3 rows then at least in the touchy, feel-good department. My first SUV/crossover was the first gen Highlander, fabulous vehicle (w/ an optional 3 rows!)...and as the RAV4 was growing closer to that anyway (but still shy by at least a couple inches in length, and especially tight elbow room and small seats), several years ago I recommended to a Toyota exec that the next (now current) RAV4 be that "exact" vehicle (1st Gen HL)--dimensionally and features wise, of course with updated styling, safety and tech. That didn't happen but now maybe should, especially if the Highlander goes away. Maybe the idea for a next gen HL should be as the Passport's equivalent-- ie, dedicated 2 row Highlander.... but I still harken back to the goodness of the first gen HL which was essentially that but with optional (and occasional use) 3rd row.
@almassengale
@almassengale Жыл бұрын
I like them offering both. The regular is nice for people who want something smaller than a Pilot or CX90 and who only plan on using the third row from time to time. As a two row vehicle it is a good choice.
@springertube
@springertube Жыл бұрын
@@almassengale very well stated and a lot more succinctly than I! Definitely a place for both. With the GHL available now, I can actually see them trim the regular HL down a hair, maybe back to the previous gen which is what I have (slightly smaller/trimmer).

Great review. Sounds like Toyota has a winner on their hands with this one. Getting the max hybrid engine in this for 68 fully loaded is a way better deal than the rx500 which gets into the mid 80s and it’s quite small. Im sure the rx is more maneuverable given it’s size, but did the toyota feel comparable to the rx in terms of refinement?

Fabulous review! Two items right off: 1) I agree with Zack - make the 2nd row bench available on more--and I say all--trim levels!! No (credible) logic saying people wanting/needing the bench/capacity don't want the nicer upper trim features too. 2) Surround camera and perhaps some other Platinum-only features should be available as an option (package?) on lesser--but at a minimum the Limited--trim levels.

Yes, the Hybrid Max Platinum is pricey for sure, but only a little bit more than the top trim of other 3-row SUV gas models. So that's something to consider, at least you get a hybrid. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV top trim including freight and delivery minus levies and fees is $66,345 CAD. Vehicles are just getting more expensive but they have so many more features and tech now.

Toyota design is getting better, showing some dynamism and restraint at the same time - a recipe for longevity. With decent tech, efficient powertrains and Toyota’s reputation for long term dependability, this will sell like crazy. When you say every model comes with a temp. Spare tire does that include the hybrids? I thought the hybrid battery was taking up the rear space so I’ve been confused on that. Does for example the gr. Highlander I’m cle trim have a spare too? Thanks.

I’m 6’0” and the lumbar support on regular highlanders hits my back too low for me and is uncomfortable. The Honda lumbar hits me just right. Did Toyoya use seats similar to Highlander or more for a bigger sub like Sequoia? Do you know if the GH lumbar is higher than regular highlanders?

Another great review Zack and Andrea. I've been looking forward to this one. It appears to be an all-round great package with different power options and trims to suit different pockets. Add in Toyota's historically great reliability and this should be a huge winner for Toyota. This should definitely steel sales from the Koreans cousins, the new Pilot and new Mazda CX-90. It's more fuel efficient, comes standard with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and has a roomy third row for adults and great overall cargo space. I think the Mazda CX-90 as nice as it may drive missed the mark as an overall package in what consumers want in a large three row family SUV.

You say for long haul the hybrid Max is the way to go, but the MPG's for long hauls, is going to add up. City / Highway is a pretty big difference between to 2, and in our case we won't be hauling anything so, the base hybrid seems a better choice and it's been around a lot longer? Limited Hybrid is what we are considering

Great review as always. I would love to get your opinion on the new trend by Toyota and Lexus to redefine a leather interior by adding suede inserts. I have a 2022 Lexus RX 450hl (with the useless 3rd row). It is has a leather interior. Not the softest leather, but decent. My son just bought a 2023 Lexus RX 350 luxury, and it has suede inserts on the sides of the seats and on the dashboard. I, for one, do not like it , as I believe leather should mean leather. I cannot imagine that, on the same seat, the leather and suede will age the same, take beating sun the same (I live in Florida and he lives in Texas), or react to getting wet the same. I feel the suede cheapens it and doesn't look as good. And, with Toyota and Lexus, there is no option on these cars to avoid the suede. Your opinion and impressions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I would say this vehicle is a home run! Granted the prices of vehicles are just going higher and higher but that's what the bank of Toyota is for 😅. You can tell that this was designed specifically to compete against the bigger SUVs in this category but with more engine options as Zach said. The base hybrid model seems like the winner though. I wonder how long the wait will be to get one.

Thanks for another great review. I felt the Grand Highlander is what most consumers want and need. As Toyota always done their R&D right, on their products. While Mazda is an emotional choice with CX-90, Highlander and G.Highlander are rational choices. Along with new Corolla Cross, NX and RX, Toyota and Lexus have another winner on their hands. For those who want better interior material quality, Lexus "Texas"..haha...TX will be the one to buy on the same architecture.

Do you know if the 2nd row captain’s chairs are removable? We may have 4 kids, 3 in car seats that we would like to put in the back row and remove one captain’s chair for ease of access to the third row. I haven’t heard anyone mention if the 2nd row captain’s chairs are removable or not.

Hi thank you so much for this great review. Can you please compare the interior space of the sienna against this, especially the third row seats? I ordered a sienna 8 months ago and the delivery date is unknown. Really like this grand highlander but i need to carry adults (seniors) in the 3rd row so need to find out how it stacks up against the sienna 3rd row.

I really wanted the regular hybrid but it only tows a maximum of 3500 lbs... Gotta go with that Hybrid Max for the full 5000 lbs unfortunately; which makes it too expensive to start. I like the extra 25 cubic feet of space over the CX-90, but I can't justify that extra cost so the CX-90 is the one I'm going with.

@@henryhonda8408ironically I ended up going with a couple year old Mazda CX-9 Kuro Edition which only has a 3500 lb towing capacity. I'm with you - don't need a third row but I do need to accommodate 5 adults on occasion and need as much cargo space as I can get. Even when folded down, you can see they're eating a lot of space and, of course, they add extra cost to the vehicle as reflected in the price.
