There is no Lexus dealer within 100 miles of my home, so it is Grand Highlander Hybrid Max for me. This will probably be the last car I buy (I am 73), so I will get the Platinum version so I can get the most enjoyment out of my driving. Getting 25 mpg on regular gas will save me money over my current V6 SUV which needs premium fuel and only gets 16 mpg around town.

As you pointed out, the *real* match to the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max (the Lexus with the same drivetrain) is the 500h F-Sport Performance trim level, which adds a bunch more cash (I can't remember how much you mentioned, but it was quite a bit.) If you add points for *that* price difference, the GH comes out way ahead. Like you said, if you want the Lexus experience at the dealership, or the better interior materials, or the bigger display, etc., etc., and money is not an issue, by all means get the Lexus. Forgot about to $2-$3k markups at Toyota on the GH. In my opinion, the Premium TX350 is a better comparison. I know around us, when we looked at the GH max platinum it was almost $62-$63k (with markup). The TX350 Premium with tech package, second row captain heat/cool, etc is at $64.5 with no markups. Lexus all the way in that instance.
@faheemabbas3965 Жыл бұрын
This. Toyota made the TX knowing very well that it has a dealership markup problem. It was made to reduce dealership markups on the grand highlander. That’s why it’s only slightly better than the grand highlander. Same for Honda making the Acura Integra despite only being slightly better, to reduce Civic Si markups (and Type R markups with the Type S). It’s also only slightly better than the Civic. Is this some kind of new Japanese North American anti-markup strategy?

Since pricing is now released, I thought I would see what $57k would buy me, as that is what I paid for my loaded GH Limited Hybrid. It would get a TX350 base, and around here, (FL) the Lexus dealers add $3200 on every car, which includes “pre delivery service” “Lexus care” plus $1000 document fee. ($57k really ends up being over $60k). What do I have on my Toyota that I don’t get on the Lexus. AWD, Real leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second row, pano roof, 360 camera, and a few small insignificant things. But the drivetrain is regular fuel, and 34 mpg. Lexus says premium, and 27 mpg. You can talk all you want about “soft touch” surfaces. The only time I touch the dash is when I clean it, or in case of an accident and I don’t have a seat belt on, my forehead. Toyota for the win.

The most practical issue right now, particularly if buying pre-owned, is you won’t be able to find a GH Hybrid Max to save your life. And when you do, it’s more expensive than MSRP (just experienced this). So really if you want the vehicle within say less than 90 days, it’s really choosing between GH Gas Platinum and all the TX models. Which changes things.
@troyw801611 ай бұрын
I would choose Lexus TX over GH for 2 main reasons. 1. Toyota deals markup eliminating the price gap between TX and GH. I live in Canada and I have seen someone paid C$ 90k on a GH hybrid max model, whereas TX is currently priced at less than $C 80k OTD. On top of that Lexus dealers are often more negotiable on both price and rates. I’m not 100% sure if this is the same case in the US, but I have seen similar stories. 2. Toyota not allowing option to choose bench seats for 2nd row on premium trims. I mean if I’m regularly hauling 4 ppl, I can go with regular highlander, I choose GH because I’m regularly hauling 5 and occasionally more, so I need bigger space. Not everyone enjoys to sit in the 3rd row, my kids get car sick more often for sitting in the 3rd row that’s why we are ditching our van for a large SUV.
@user-mf6xj1cz8c Жыл бұрын
With all the unrest in the Middle East and the certainty that fuel prices will go higher, my biggest concern is mpg. It's funny that these guys don't address that. The TGH offers a hybrid (non-Max) version that gets 34 mpg with AWD and can use regular gas. Plus it offers the panoramic moonroof. The third row bench seat has three seat belts for three persons (likely kids), but the seating capacity is seven if you choose captain chairs for the second row. The base price is $51,060 and with optional trimmings comes to $56,481. I also like the look better than the softer LTX. Compare that to the most fuel efficient LTX - the LTX 550h+ PHEV. The LTX PHEV won't be available until 2024. It offers only 33 miles on electric charge, and because it adds a V6, will get about 26 mpg and requires the use of premium gas. It won't have a panoramic moonroof, because Lexus says its concerned about the weight. The LTX PHEV offers only a two seat bench in the third row (only two seat belts), thus with captain chairs in the second row, it provides seating for only six persons. To get this 26 mpg, the rumored price for the PHEV without the trimmings is north of $80,000. In addition, word is that the LTX PHEV won't be available in all 50 states and will be in short supply due to the need to consolidate production in Indiana. It also won't qualify for the federal tax credit because Toyota does not build its batteries in the States. That won't happen until 2025. And I've read that Toyota is looking at technology that will give its PHEVs 125 miles to a charge that may (MAY) be available by 2026. Finally, Toyota/Lexus announced that their PHEVs will be manufactured with the Tesla plug sometime around 2025-26. In summary, waiting on the LTX PHEV to get to a point where it even matches the existing TGH non-Max hybrid in terms of fuel efficiency will probably mean another three year wait minimum. I'm also guessing that adding options to the LTX PHEV base price of $80,000 will mean that it's a full $30k premium for the Lexus badge and a better car audio system (which I can buy as an aftermarket for the TGH). I say no. I want fuel efficiency and I really don't care if it means it takes me a full second more to achieve 0-60 mph to get it. Lexus needs to provide a model that emphasizes fuel efficiency instead of putting such a premium on performance alone.

Lexus components and material are higher quality. Paint, sheet metal used, structural integrity is stronger resulting in a safer vehicles (Lexus are built like tanks) and Lexus offer more standard luxury features by default... The process to put together a Lexus vehicle is more time consuming and expensive... Lexus compete with Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover, BMW, etc... Its not even close... Toyota vehicles are build cheaper uses lower quality material and parts... Its not as structurally strong as the Lexus vehicle... You pay for what you get in the end... Unlike the Germans, Lexus is a reliable luxury brand. So yea your talking about all the features you getting with Toyota but your missing the point that one is built way superior than the other form the core up... In an accident, I would rather be in a Lexus... @@persaud101 well, I paid window sticker with no mark up or dealer add ons. Since this Lexus is coming off the exact same assembly line as the GH, I doubt there is that much difference in the safety materials. Yes, it is a reliable luxury vehicle, and yes there will be materials on the inside that will be different. But I never touch the dash and say “ oooh, soft touch materials”. But I will notice that I have ventilated real cow leather seats, and people who ride with me will notice the heated rear seats, and the massive sunroof. I will notice that I have a 360 camera, and none of those things is offered on the base level TX, that cost what mine does. Also, at that price I will notice AWD, and will notice that when I fill up every 500 miles, (instead of 270 miles), I will be paying about .60 less a gallon for fuel, because Lexus requires premium to run right, and they don’t offer a hybrid, (other that the engine that is comparable to the hybrid max). Do I like Lexus as a brand? Absolutely. Fine cars. Is it worth the extra money for the status of the brand? For some people, but not for me. As a side note, every Lexus dealer that I looked at charges a bonus for that “Lexus Experience”. In Florida it’s $3200 for “preconditioning, dealer service, and Asst fees”. In Iowa, they charge $1700 for “Lexus Premium”, whatever that is.

@@jonkrispeterson6678 There are differences how a Lexus is build but I am not knocking the GH build quality neither because I know it’s going to last for the next 10-20 years… I never thought a Lexus and Toyota price would cross each other in the current market in NY/NJ… Also your lucky to get a GH at sticker. Right now they are going 3k-10k over sticker and that’s colliding with Lexus Tx in the NY/NJ area… A GH hybrid is going for 60k+ and hybrid max is going 72k+…. I am not so keen on those turbo engines at that price point. So regular tx premium is around 61k and regular gh limited is around 58-60k+ so the price nearing each other for a better built vehicle which does use more gas. Right now I am even thinking of the Honda Pilot with everything for 51k since Toyota dealerships are price gouging like crazy and restricting supply on purpose but I am going do everything to get a GH limited but it’s not looking too good price wise…

I prefer buy Toyota Grand Highlander for the money and fuel option. No premium gas! plus 3rd rows for 3 people.

They are the exact same vehicle. We add a few bells and whistles to the Lexus and install bigger front and rear bumpers. That’s really the only difference other than price.

Toyota made the TX knowing very well that it has a dealership markup problem. It was made to reduce dealership markups on the grand highlander. That’s why it’s only slightly better than the grand highlander, because why spend and do so much on a car that’s supposed to reduce markups? Same for Honda making the Acura Integra despite only being slightly better, to reduce Civic Si markups (and Type R markups with the Type S). It’s also only slightly better than the Civic. Is this some kind of new Japanese North American anti-markup strategy?

The TX has the option for captains in the second row with the Luxury package and an optional power plug. You do not need the F-sport for that.

Millage - just starting to look at a new GH Hybrid or GHiHy to replace my 2012 Highlander. Great detail and info in the video, but you left out WHY the GHiHy MAX gets such awful mpg. The Max is tuned for performance and towing. The MaX ICE engine is ALWAYS on to supply the 2nd e-motor. The regular HiHy XLE / Limited has MUCH better mileage. Forget the MAX - The GHiHy is the one to get.

The TX has removable console when it has captain chairs as well… Also when I had both of these priced the gh ended up being way more than MSRP but TX wasn’t.
@baizilkjacob13208 ай бұрын
I think I’m leaning towards Tx, just because it has much better space in the third row. In grand highlander, it’s hard for full size adult to sit in a back row.
@viktorandy6080 Жыл бұрын
We took TX 350 Luxury after checking several times. Materials inside GH feel differently. Stitches are uneven, plastic cheap, and more devilish in details. If you don't care about these, GH is your option.
@davidself88688 ай бұрын
if you model out the cost difference in premium vs regular gas while also factoring in resale value + warranty differences, it’s not that big of a difference. I was really opposed to it but after seeing the numbers i was like meh, more a psychological thing.

The Highlander extra points need to be a reverse function of family income level, not a constant number. If a family total incomes above $300k, they care less about value. But if income $100k, high lander

Honestly Toyota should’ve made just one 3 row SUV instead of two but it’s WE ig😂 I would probably go for the Toyota Grand Highlander cuz I don’t really care about showing off and the TX technically would be more expensive to maintain in the long run compared to the GH and I like and prefer the easier car to maintain (also cuz I have 2 Toyotas already). The one thing I don’t like about the GH is that the rear turn signal and brake lights are combined into one, not sure why but I’m not a fan of that in most cars.

Great comparison 👍. It comes down to how much is your budget and willing to spend for comfort. When comparing same powertrain, HM vs 550h, the price difference is 12-15k. The question is: are the tangible ride comfort and a bit more luxurious interior, but less seating configuration worth that much money? I still dont know the answer 😊

Well my 2017 Highlander hybrid was recently totaled, due to individual turned in front of me. Anyway was looking to replace my 2017 hybrid (306 hp) with a other hybrid Highlander, but after many reviews of Toyota and Lexus hybrids, I’ve chosen Grand Highlander Platinum with Max engine (362hp) looks better ,better mpg, more hp, regular gas, and most importantly cheaper.

Have Ford Flex Limited now, I see no reason to upgrade and spend sooo much money. The hybrid would be nice but ROI would never justify it. Space seems to be less on these also in the cargo area. I dont understand all the speakers, all a car neads in 4 sets of components(tweeter and a mid) and a REAL 10" or bigger subwoofer 500watt or so
