Thanks for continuing to carry the torch for maximum seating capacity in all trims! I hear your explanation given to you by Toyota's chief engineer regarding leaving out a bench seat on the Platinum trim due to the weight of all the extra features, and with a bench you'd have to allow for the weight of the seat plus a person sitting in it. My answer to that is, "so provide some more power and grunt, and give up 200-250 lb of towing - or give up 1 mpg." I mean seriously, when a vehicle is tested to determine it's EPA mpg, do they load it up with a person in every seat? I'd be shocked if they did, so there goes that argument. As for towing, I don't have as quick an answer, but seriously, tell the user that towing goes down by 250 lbs IF YOU PUT 8 PEOPLE IN THE CAR! I appreciate that there is at least some thinking behind why top trims don't have a bench, I just don't agree with it, and/or would be happy to accept the compromise. Let the customer make that decision. Has Honda patented the idea of a removable center section of the 2nd row? Deal with it somehow Toyota and make it happen.

city driving is where the GH Hybrids are at its best. My wife’s 2024 Lexus NX350H, which has the same powertrain as the GH non max Hybrids non, gets almost 40MPG city driving. I expect the GH Hybrids to get at least 30 city since it weights 700 lbs more than the Lexus NX hybrid. Although the CX90 will offer better performance and driving dynamic.

I really do think the manufacturers are doing a disservice by only doing captains chairs on the upper trims. The middle seat on the Pilot Elite was a big factor for me. I wanted all the bells and whistles but really wanted a middle seat in the second row so I didn't have to always sacrifice the cargo room to seat three adults in the rear. If you don't have kids, the top trims on the competition are basically 4 seat vehicles if you don't want to ask an adult to climb into the third row. With the Pilot, I'm not even limited to one option or the other, as I can stow that middle seat in minutes in the cargo well.

Your great GH reviews solidified my choice to finally move away from Hondas. I got the GH Limited Hybrid (not max) with bench seat. Our family absolutely loves the ride, technology, cargo space behind 3rd and 2nd row way more than the others (Pilot, Kia, Hyun…). I have 1600 miles with about 80% highway driving and I’m averaging 38.2 mpg. I love the hybrid - such smooth shifting, quiet, and plenty of power for accelerating or passing on freeway. I did drive the hybrid max and agree that is awesome but way more money to buy and my hybrid (not max) kills the V6, turbo, or max which will save thousands of dollars and way less stops at the pump as the tank lasts over 600 miles.

I bought the 2024 XLE and it is the best car i've ever driven. I've never had a toyota. I like the bench seat. The only complaint I have is the folding down of the seats in the back is difficult. The center console is very large. Really love the front end of this car. I got the blue print color, it's kind of sparkly and wasn't my first choice in color but it looks good from a distance. By far my favorite aspect of this car is the panoramic sunroof. The back seat is large enough for an adult. You can get more room by moving the middle row forward. I will be keeping this car forever.

One vehicle that could have made the "For Your Consideration" list is the often forgotten about Subaru Ascent. It ranges in price from just over $43k to just over $56k, all of which are well equipped and all drive very well. Also, you can have 8 passenger seating configurations in the mid range Touring trim or upper Limited trim (the other trims are 7 passenger seating with captain's chairs). For this new Grand Highlander, they've really nailed this vehicle. Plenty of trims and powertrain options to suit almost everyone.

I agree 100%. I'm from the US and contrary to "popular belief," I hate pickup trucks and crossovers of any size; it's just not my cup of tea. I haul cars (the company I work for hauls predominantly Toyotas, but we do haul Nissans, Fords, and a Hyundai every once in a while out of our rail yard) and I saw when these first started appearing on the yard. Comparing it to the Sienna, I appreciate the extra ground clearance and the styling is so much better. When I got to haul them for the first time, I had a Hybrid and a Hybrid Max on that load; the day after, I had a couple non-Hybrids. Toyota has somehow made me want to consider having a car payment again. The very limited time I had driving it in the yard, I was impressed with the way how it soaked up bumps and imperfections in the road surface (A LOT of those there 🤣) and how quiet the Hybrid Max was. I actually held my head out the window while I was driving it to confirm if the gas engine was on - it's that quiet.

Glad someone finally asked why no bench seat 2nd row. Fuel economy is no good though for giving up one extra passenger. Capability will always cost fuel, but imo one extra seat is worth the extra gas. Makes no sense a car this size is 4 passenger with third row down. Oh well, better to just get a RAV4 to REALLY save gas and easily seat 5 without messing around with seat configuration.

My vote also goes to a bench seat in the middle row - captain’s chairs allow cargo and dogs (and other pets) to come flying through from the luggage compartment (and is therefore a safety issue in my opinion) when you have to suddenly brake. And robs you of an extra seat (and luggage space if you have to seat child no 3 or grandma in the third row) when you don’t want to use the third row, which is especially irksome if you have a larger family.

I'm in the market for a larger family car and really like the new Grand Highlander. I think it looks great, has really good value for money and it's a Toyota - can't go wrong. I think I'm stuck at the idea of the car getting stolen, and dealing with constant paranoia of whether I'll wake up and it's gone from my driveway. In my Etobicoke neighbourhood of 500 homes there's been 2 highlanders stolen in the last couple years. This is what's holding me back.

Terrific and fun review as always. You keep it light yet very informative. I love the way you both work together! I am curious about the new car buying market in Canada. I'm on the Treasure Coast of Florida, and the Toyota dealers have been and are still jacking up the price with a "Market Adjustment" line item. They don't even try to hide it with things like pinstripes and door guards. Nope, it's just a blatant Market Adjustment. The regular Highlander has a $5000 add on, and the fully electric BRZ... had a $25,000 adjustment. I can only imagine what they will add to the Grand Highlander. It's criminal, and I'm wondering if the dealers are doing the same thing there in your area? Thank you as always.

While I don't dispute your choices of 3-row SUVs to consider I have to wonder if you should also include a comparison to what we mortals may be used to considering as baseline, or reference, vehicles? What are the top-selling 3-row units over the last 2-3 years? I suspect that the Explorer would be on that list. What makes the GH Hybrid superior to my '17 Explorer Platinum? It has been a great workhorse, and a lovely highway cruiser that we load to the gunnels, and beyond, on every trip. Your videos show the GH treated gently. How would it perform if you push it on winding roads, overtaking on short passing opportunities, and weighed down with the passengers and cargo that it is meant to carry? Will the hybrid perform all the way to the top of a 20km hill, and the brakes / transmission do their job well on the way down? Thanks!

I’m not so sure it will ‘crush’ it in the market. Mostly because of the Korean ‘twins’ or rather triplets (Genesis). It certainly will have a formidable presence, mostly because of it’s (well earned/deserved) badge value. But as it’s price creeps up to $70,000 (and that’s before taxes/finance/F&I add-ons and BS documentation/transport fees… which ALL vehicles have)… so WELL over $80 Canadian!…which is a lot of money - especially these last few years. And that’s especially a lot for a Toyota. Trying not to sound like a hypocrite, I would contemplatively discuss and support that price (or more) if it had a Lexus badge on the hood. Is that shallow? Thanks for the video.

Other reviewers have mentioned that the bottom seat cushions are short and not supportive for longer legs. Also the hood vibrates constantly because the hood is very thin and the engine is course. Have you noticed either?

Does it have the same issue I had with the regular Highlander where the left side door armrest for the driver is way too low and far away to be of any use? I thought the regular Highlander’s seats were exceptionally comfortable but the door rests were too low and far away to help make me feel secure. I’m 6 feet tall so I doubt I’m the only person who has noticed this. The RAV4 doesn’t have this problem but its seats aren’t nearly as comfortable nor does it have the space I need.

Toyota is reserving the plugin exclusive to the new Lexus TX-550h+. That one is going to be the best out of all of the Toyota power train line up. This is from the Lexus website. The TX 550h+ is a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) that features a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, a high-density lithium-ion battery pack and an advanced all-wheel drive system, which work in concert to produce 404 net combined horsepower. With a full charge, the TX 550h+ has a manufacturer-estimated 33 miles of pure-electric driving range. So not only will you get the best powertrain but also the luxury and reliability. However, unlike the Grand Highlander that seats 7-8 passengers. The TX-550h+ will only seat stricktly 6.

I took delivery on a GH Platinum about a month ago. Mine is gas non turbo. The engine has been a pleasant surprise in terms of power but gas mileage seems less than advertised. I seem to be getting about 18 city (or less) and about 25 highway. Pleasant driving dynamics for a fairly large vehicle. Check engine light came on with only 250 miles. Dealer reprogrammed the main computer then it came back on again after a couple hundred miles. Dealership sales manager told me that he had consulted Toyota engineering and they acknowledged they were aware of the problem and were working on a fix. Will likely need a software update. Anyone else having similar issues?

Dislike how upper trims don’t have option for bench seats. Also in the US, Portabello is only avail for Platinum trims. To the Prime question, the TX will be coming out with a plug-in V6, so could assume GH will eventually get one, probably 4 cyl tho.

The price difference between the TX and GH is probably ~$12-20k though. If that’s doesn’t make a dent in your pocket, I would go TX500h+.
