Ryan flys to the UK to drive the new 2024 Toyota Hilux GR Sport II. Is this newest version of a legendary truck better than the Tacoma and Ford Ranger we get in North America? Time to get some international perspective!

Pretty cool that You visited Europe to test our most reliable truck. You can use it as a tractor on the farm and still don't break it. Great review. Greetings

Very nice review! It would be nice to let people choose which one they want. Although at $65K, everyone would probably go to the new platform. 30mpg in UK is about 25mpg in the USA. Imperial gallon is about 1.2 US gallon.

"I averaged 30-32 MPG" - Did you re-calculate the MPG from the UK to the US one? Imperial gallon is 4.546 liter, while the US gallon is 3.785 liter, so 30-32 UK MPG equals 25-27 US MPG

Yeah the 2.8L Diesel is about 24-27 US MPG when on stock highway tires and unloaded with mixed driving. With rooftop tent, and 33" mild All-Terrains it gets as low as 19 MPG for off-road/city/highway speeds :- ).

Ryan, I got my Hilux end 23 with the 2.8 D and changed the wheels directly for Yokohama At Tires with the snowflake symbol, all terrain, all weather, ice and snow. Now it is perfect 😢 Yes it is old school like me. 63 years, retired and driving a pick-up instead a 911. I love this truck 😊

You touched on the two key points: outside of the US, off-roading for leisure is not as popular and the owner of this type of vehicle typically seeks reliability / durability / economy over outright capability. Pickup ownership as a personal vehicle is not really wide spread for many reasons, including the fact that this is not a very practical vehicle to daily drive given price, size and fuel economy. Offroad enthusiasts certainly exist, but they are out in a modified vehicle that cost the equivalent of $650 - $6,500, not $65,000. Australia is different in this aspect. Arab world is different and wild...

The Duster has a rudimentary AWD system however it does have "4WD Lock" mode which allows you to split the power 50%-%50 front and rear. The only issue with this type of Haldex system is that in hardcore, sustained off-road, the rear coupling will overheat and you will go into 2WD until you turn the car off for a minute or more and let it cool. . .
@moonsapling

@@DaciaProject Ive ridden in a first gen 1.5 4WD, it was a muddy climb to a mountain peak near my friend's town. It didnt overheat so I guess its robust enough for most conditions, not impossible though. I still think its way more capable than most SUVs, maybe comparable to Subarus.

I ony have a few comments to make: First, I know you said multiple times, but the tires really set the limits for this truck. Second this is different than the TRDs, it is something that put reliability and simplicity before off road performance. And finally, outside a few special markets like the USA, Australia and parts of the Middle East, off-roading, as a hobby is very rare due, mainly to cost. So this truck, even tough parades itself as a sporty truck, acts more as a lifestyle truck for its buyers. It hasn´t been developed enough to really compete with the Ranger Raptor. It won´t go as far, and it won´t be as confortable; but it´ll bring you back. And it still keeps the best of Toyotas: Reliability, simplicity, and resell value

Interesting. Your adventure to the UK to try out something we hoped would stack up to the reputation that it has was a flop. I was as excited about your opportunity as you were. I was prepared to ask, how much would it cost to ship one here? BUT, at those prices and the poor performance(tires beside the point)what you got here seems like a watered down version of what they offer us in the USA. Def. gives people perspective now. And yah, I think it would be fun for you to find other vehicles we do not have here in the USA and see if the hype matches the actual performance. Such as the Jimny. Thanks Ryan! Great camera work and editing.

Here in Europe, we don't have big roads like the US or big parking spaces**;** everything is narrow here. Owning a Raptor in Europe would be a headache. The Hilux is the best because of its simplicity, as you mentioned. You don't need fancy systems to go off-road all you need is locks and installing an ARB, for example, lock in the front this car goes literally everywhere.

@@drivingsports That being said, I appreciate your balanced review. The Hilux has always been more ... ahem ... agricultural than the Taco. When visiting family in rural England I only ever see midsize pickups as working vehicles on farms, often with the bed laden with hay bales. Your struggles with the tyres reminds me of the OEM all terrains supplied on my previous gen Tundra. The 2.8 diesel does seem like a workhorse. It's also supplied on the LC 70 series outside US and Canada.

This is the one thing that separates Driving Sports from the wannabees... integrity. Ryan will point out the negatives, while also indicating that if this is what you are looking for... go for it! Just not in the U.S. I do have to admit, however, that when Ryan mentioned 8-track, I salivated. I mean, the BeeGees, Olivia Newton John... if only! They lied about emissions for years on their TDI vehicles, were caught, and were fined billions by the US government.
