Many, if not all plug-ins have a countdown, so after so many months of purely EV driving, the car is smart enough to tell you "we need to turn the engine on and burn your fuel so it doesn't go stale "

I had heard that the recommendation is one tank of fuel a month, which in a Prius is 400 miles, or about half the miles you put on a 10,000 mile lease. Turned me off from plugins.

@@Yeahyeah-ic8xm You do realize it's not mandatory to run a full tank per month through the car, right? Buy a bottle of fuel stabilizer and don't overthink it. You'll use the gas engine often enough anyway and you'll get 50+mpg while doing it. I'm not sure why this non-existent issue turned you off to plugins.

I was always one that would talk bad about the Prius and their drivers since they first came out... well, I am officially one of them. Today I bought a 2024 Prime Premium with all the bells and whistles. The new body style, better engine, and 40 mile EV range sold me. Mine was sitting on the car lot for 20 days and no one bought it and no markup over sticker and it was the only Prius on the lot as they mainly focus on trucks. They only had 1 type of each toyota car and a ton of trucks. Win win for me.

I think these look fantastic. As someone closing in on 61, this style Prius looks like the "cars of the future" that were proposed decades ago that i saw in the car magazines. To me, it's just enough and of the right size. I just would prefer a base model, I guess, without all the unnecessary power everything and extraneous gadgets and features. I can lift a hatch or trunk lid. I think power opening things are silly and just add extra weight and complexity.

Toyota has a hit with the new Prius. If only they'd build more to satisfy demand but that goes for most of their models. PHEVs are fantastic and have few downsides. EV driving around town but quick refueling and no range anxiety. Priuses are famously reliable and Toyota has finally made the Prius cool.

We tried to buy one when they came out to pass-down an existing Prius through the family. They were so hard to get, we kept the existing Prius in place and bought a new Mazda for the family member. We keep our cars for 15-20 years. All other car moves have been put on long-term hold. We'll try you again in another 19 years Toyota. Maybe.

Toyota doesn't sell the current Prius Hybrid (or plug-in hybrid) in Australia where I spent the first sixty years of my life, or in the Philippines where I am now. My late wife and I in Australia enjoyed driving the generation two Prius five door hatchback we had from 2007 to 2015. I sold it after her sudden death in 2015. The current model is streets ahead of the Gen Two model of course, Zack.

Solar roof is a gimmick. 1-3 extra miles over a sunny work day is laughable and is more like 1/30th of a gallon of gas for the Prius. It’ll take 30 full sunny work days of solar roof charging to get one gallon’s worth of gas. $5 benefit over 1-2 months parked outside in the sun.

@aca2983

I drove a non-Prime last week for about 1 hour. Wanted to like it but I didn't. 1) yes it's fast and looks better, but 2) it still has bad ergonomics 3) very bad visibility 4) is scaled to a 5'6 person, 5) the seats didn't have much lumbar support, 6) it sits too low and it's easy to bump your head, and 5) I just have never seen a Toyota interior that was pleasing enough to me to live with long term. I'm eager to check out the 2025 Civic Hybrid hatchback when it finally releases.
@truthserum5310

FYI, I just drove a 2025 Civic Hybrid Sport Touring Hatch, as I have also been waiting for it to make my decision. Positive - Car drove great, peppy, solid feeling, hatch makes it very practical, and the build quality was great for a car in the mid 30K price range. Negative - I took it on the highway, and the road and wind noise at 70mph was a disappointment. I had my Db meter, and at 70 mph it was reading 66-67 Db's. No lumbar support on front drivers seat. Since we will be traveling on many extended road trips, we have ultimately decided to go with a 25 Camry XLE FWD. It's a bit roomier, substantially quieter on the highway, and mpg's are almost exactly the same as the Civic Hybrid.

wow its almost as good as my 6000$ 15 year old volt which gets 45-55 miles of ev range, doesnt have an e-cvt (first gen volts use solid metal gears instead of a self destructing metal belt). put 35k miles on the car last year and saved 2500 in gas. given that my insurance is only 23$/mo coz i paid cash, the car will be free in another year. doesnt have usb-c ports so i guess the prius has me beat with the highest trim level and waiting list lol. i added 200w of solar to the roof which charges the low voltage 4kwh battery i added and boosts range by eliminating parasitic 12v loss of range and also feeds into my house with a microinverter i installed to save electricity.

Plug in EV. The worst of all worlds. If you do short trips just buy an EV but if you do longer trips then you are lugging around extra weight. Has the classic Toyota cheapness at the not so cheap price anymore (case in point the gauge looks like it was made in 1990). Not my cup of tea.

What ? Plug-in hybrid you mean. Our 2024 Prius Prime has now traveled over 5,312.5 miles (8,500+ km), with LESS than two tanks of fuel used. Keep in mind, the tank is but 10.5 gallons. We have gotten as much as 91 km on a charge, with power still left over. Today, the trip computer estimated a 102 km EV range when I unplugged the cord. On the thus far, two, highway trips (after the Traction Battery died), the hybrid system delivered 62mpg. This thing is the best of all World's, and at 2/3 the cost of an EV.
