We do a detailed review of the new 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid. This car pushes forward in every category, from EV range, HP, Style, and value. While the sedan market has moved to SUVs, with a bit of creativity, will this new Prius become popular again? Others to consider are Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, and Tesla Model 3.

Toyota dealers are going to bend you over so far if you really want one of these. 10,000 examples is basically nothing. That's a tiny fraction of RAV4 production, and you can hardly find one of those, especially the hybrid. As to the Prius' appliance character, they've always been appliances. My Gen II was awful to drive, but it was by far the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Even two teenagers couldn't kill it. They could ding it up pretty badly, though.

Yep, pretty much any car in this sector is a commuting appliance. Maybe as time goes on they will ramp production, but since other car companies have tied up battery contracts for years to come unless Toyota starts making their own battery factories they are going to be supply constrained for the forseable future, which is a shame. The last time a PHEV this good came out was the Gen 2 Volt. In fact the price for those Gen 2s have just been going up around here as time goes on, who would have thought a commuting appliance was an investment!

Priuses have been 100mph+ cars for a while now. If you want to pass everyone on the highway, basically any car will do it. If someone buys a BRZ to do Texas highway drag racing, they're a moron. That's a twisty road car.

@@alexstromberg7696 Hey, guess what everyone does with every car 90% of the time? The Prius is also ideal for road trips and taxi duty. But yeah, if you want a Texas Mile car, don't buy a BRZ or a Prius. Still though, even if you do drive a 1,200hp ZL1 with nitrous, unless you're actively doing Cannonball pace on the 405, a Prius can match your speed over the road. Fast cars aren't fast point-to-point unless you're prepared to break laws and have lawyers on retainer.
@ilovebanks1526
@ilovebanks1526 Жыл бұрын
@@JETZcorp Speeding isn't as dramatic as you make it sound. People most of the time don't get caught, and if they do, it's a simple speeding ticket. Cars for enthusiasts are about the thrill and engagement of the drive. Priuses are appliances. They now have a decent 0-60 but that's not where joy or engagement comes from. You are correct that every car commutes 90% of the time but fail to mention the difference in driving dynamics/fun/engagement or anything else that makes a fun car fun to drive as they commute. To say they do the same thing just as well is disingenuous otherwise there would only be singular CAR to buy. That being said, I would consider the new Prius as a new car buy for a long-term commuter because that's what they're built for. And the BRZ/86 I would consider if I want to have fun every day I commute to work. Choices, choices.
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp Жыл бұрын
@@ilovebanks1526 I get what you're saying, since I'm literally in my Miata right now. However I think a disappointing number of people derive their car enthusiasm entirely from spec sheet performance. A large percentage of modern performance cars drive like 500hp Priuses with uncomfortable springs. This is the kind of person who scoffs at the idea of getting a BRZ because it's not powerful, and gets offended by the idea of a Prius ever crossing their 3/9 line. These are the kinds of people who need to be reminded that even a 2001 Prius WILL do felony speeds, so worrying about getting passed by one is pointless. As you point out, the real goal is engagement, which IMO you get about the same amount of in a Prius or an M4 at same speeds. That's why I lean towards cars like Miata, BRZ, or even really slow stuff like Mk.I VWs.

i wonder if its much worse. its big diameter but lot thinner, so mass maybe not worse, but availability of the tire maybe a problem ... but i think its gonanbecome a more common tire not just because toyota is popularizing it, but also because itll appear in other cars because its connection to the car is higher up, giving more ground clearance without the connecting part sticking out under the car, so areoydnamics will be better. thinness also helps areodynamics and low rolling ressitence and lessfrictionwhen turning (agility, less tire wear), and it looks like art deco dramatic sports car big wheel on outside if not paying attention to thinnesss of the wheel when its turning(most people arnt paying much attention).

You might make it; it depends a lot on your weather conditions. My 2017 Prime is rated for 25 EV miles, and I routinely achieve that and more unless it's very hot or very cold (New England: hot summers, cold winters). If you're a hard gas, hard brake style driver (like my husband- speeding, tailgating, zooming up to stop signs, etc. ), you likely won't see 44 miles, but if you optimize by hypermiling, you'll likely get more than 44 (again, depending on seasonal temperatures).

I don't know that Toyota has much choice. They're independent businesses that are free to set prices, and that's a fact that has bedeviled all the automakers except Tesla (who's fought titanic battles against state dealer associations even though they don't have any franchised dealers to begin with). This is why Toyota imposed very strict behavioral standards on any dealer who wanted in on Lexus when they founded it in 1989, and they tried and failed to do the same with Scion.

None of the Toyota dealers near me will sell this without added markups or forcing you to buy expensive add-ons (paint and upholstery protection, nitrogen, window tint, etc).
