Yep. Gonky and Wombat said on "The Mover and Gonky Show" (mentioned by TR4Ajim above) that they turn RWR off when carrier landing because it's just too much of a distraction. They probably don't need alarms blaring in their headsets when they have enough on their plates, trying to gently crash land on a coked-up postage stamp. :) They apparently often get locked up for a number of reasons while in the pattern. Mover, as an Air Force guy, never turned his RWR off while landing. Though, his air fields were usually much longer and generally don't move much. :)

According to Ward Carroll, Gettysburg would have been positioned directly behind the HST because during night recovery the ship’s lights give the LSO a better sense of where the horizon is. And the aircraft fly a straight approach and final rather than doing a break over the boat. The missiles would have been heading straight up and straight at the incident aircraft. Not easy to judge distance. When in doubt get out.

SMs won’t shoot at squeaking A/C; SMs won’t shoot at a Friendly A/C ID in datalink; A/C under control by E-2 and then by CV but under the CG that was AAWC. Sounds very similar to the Vincennes/Iran Airbus TRAINING incident where everyone in the detect to engage sequence failed.

I agree that Ward typically has good inside info and experience about Naval aviation situations. My problem with Ward, and I've called him out a couple of times, is that he is a little too inside with the higher ups and occasionally goes into CYA mode for them. He has made a couple of anti-Trump or anti-Replublican videos saying don't politicize the military. The crazy thing is they were specifically calling out the Flag officers for being political but Ward either couldn't see it because they are his buddies or ignored it because they are his buddies. Either way he is not an independent operator who treats everyone equally.
@Doodelz022 күн бұрын
I dunno. Watch a lot of Ward's videos. He definitely tries to do the "right thing". Obviously, everyone brings a bit of bias to a third hand report, but I wouldn't watch if I wasn't convinced his intent is pure. That said, he also brings his deep personal expertise ... which is fantastic, BUT means it's sometimes speculative. Definitely parts of his report on this particular incident fall into the latter category. Won't know until the report comes out, but given the pilot's first hand account, it appears the Gettysburg was likely where Cap placed it -- hot side of conflict, to the right a bit. Biggest issue for me is why TWO (or 3 including 143) IFF's didn't register on the Gettysburg (or alternately why within visual range the Gettysburg couldn't identify 3 Superhornet's nose-to-tail in landing config). Surely IFF doesn't go away if RWR is manually turned off. That'd be ... sorry to use a technical term: "dumb". Anyone know with confidence? (No secret stuff please ... Cap has already had a 3rd encounter of the NCIS kind 😛)!

By the way, while I appreciate the pilot and WSO getting this info out there I can't believe that this was in anyway authorized and that there won't be hell to pay. It's not up to individuals to play CYA and share their version of the propaganda during an investigation. I wouldn't approve General Milli Vanilli Miley doing it or an E-1 who screwed up. These guys may be 100% accurate but any on duty related info (especially related to a major screwup) has no place on social media unless you are part of the public affairs office. Remember that the government has prosecuted enlisted personnel for having one picture of an engineroom, even though there was absolutely nothing in the picture that shared technical details, specifications, or operational limits. If a generic picture can get NCIS and DOJ after you then these two should be in a hell of a lot of trouble.

Gotta agree entirely. Not sure what the thinking was. Perhaps 100% "clarity", but perhaps not. They certainly sound sincere, but we're only hearing the one side. Here’s the problem with this narrative (and I understand you’re working with the information available). I served as an AAW operator on warships and I can tell you it’s absolutely impossible to lock onto a friendly symbol and fire at it. Combat systems don’t lock onto radar returns-they lock onto the symbol provided by the system. The symbol sits over the top of a radar return and the system tracks it automatically i.e. keeps the symbol on top of the radar return. Once a missile is launched, it’s guided to the target by a STIR, after which its internal systems take over for the final phase. The claim that the DDG fired at a friendly is outright nonsense. Jets in the link are actively reporting their position, and the AEGIS system recognises them as friendly based on that input to the link. It’s not the combat system deciding they’re friendly-it’s the jet itself broadcasting that information, which the system then correlates via the Mode 4 and then displays it as a friendly symbol to the operators. No operator could accidentally lock onto and fire at a friendly symbol. It’s simply not possible - the AGEIS system wouldn't allow it. The explanation being fed to us-that this was a mistake-is a blatant lie. The U.S. government is hiding something, and while I can’t say what it is, I can say with absolute certainty that they’re not telling the truth. By the way I love your channel and your content - I'm not having a crack at anything you fellas do here. Just sharing a perspective that you probably havent considered.
@Doodelz022 күн бұрын
@PropertyEnvy Good to know. Ty. Makes sense. Someone posted earlier here about a daily change in IFF code that may have been missed by Gettysburg folks (or presumably the equivalent mechanical/software failure to update). Sounds plausible to my brain. You too? Still unclear to me that "3 F-18's in a row on approach" weren't identified, though. I could see a "red flag" being raised if IFF was faulty ... but a snap-call missle shot?
@PropertyEnvy2 күн бұрын
@Doodelz02 it's not IFF like Mode 1,2 or C it's Mode 4. Only military aircraft have it and it updates daily (as mentioned below). Put that aside for just a sec. Something no one else is talking about is warnings. If an unknown is approaching the ship then warnings 1 through 7 are also issued. No one has said if they issued any warnings at all? A jet looks very, very different to a missile and operators would know instantly if a missile was coming at them or they were the usual jets they see every day during air ops. The whole thing stinks to high hevean and I smell a dirty rotting rat with all the lies being spewed by the US government.
@Doodelz022 күн бұрын
@PropertyEnvy Thanks. No expert for sure. My understanding, though, is that on departure from the carrier and before starting any operation, IFF is verified to be working on each plane. Working? Cool. Not? Insta-RTB. Failures do happen, but for 3 planes in a line? All 3 fail at once? Unlikely at best. Making it in turn likely that if there were an issue, it would almost certainly stem from the Tico. (Not pointing fingers, but at age 36, I was starting to mess things up too!😜) I've not seen anything other than "under investigation" (plus Cap noting here that X removed the pilot's posts). Can't personally see the Navy engaging in a cover-up, as too many know too much already. I, as always, stand to be corrected! Thanks for the quick reply.
@PropertyEnvy2 күн бұрын
@Doodelz02 all possible however unlikely because the jet would never leave the deck without the correct Mode 4. No military aircraft ever does! Even if it did/could NO operator would allow the friendly track to be engaged. There is just no physical way for someone to press the fire button because too many things have to happen before we get to that very point. On top of all that every operator knows exactly what fighters look like, and it's nothing like a cruise missile, a sea skimming missile and certainly not a ballistic missiles. No operator could confuse a Super with any type of missile. Its simply impossible. Its another dirty cover up. Just think of C19, the election, the laptop, the assassination attempts and the hundreds of other massive lies the freaks on the left have told us all. This is another one of their cover ups. What that cover up is will come out eventually, the truth has a way of always coming out.
