How bad is the motion on the s95d?
@9to5techsАй бұрын
I currently have the s90d 77-in. I heard that the QD-OLED screens are easy to scratch I just looked at mine with the screen off with the flashlight and I have two scratches. I was thinking about taking it back and replacing with the QN90D 85 in or should I just get a replacement for the s90d or replace it with a QN90D. I am in the living room with light controlled environment. The only thing I will do is watch movies, TV shows, a little bit of news, no video games. Is the QN90d black levels almost the same as the s90d would I be disappointed with the QN90d.

At this point, is it just assumed the newer 2024 A95L builds are 3rd Gen? Could that be why some the lower stimulus saturation issues weren’t visible on the 65” at the shootout.
@whitecrowuk5753 ай бұрын
Isn’t, why would it be? They still have a new line of QD OLEDs 90D which use second gen so clearly it’s still being produced. What would Samsung provide Sony better panels for same price or Sony to spend more to get same similar performance?

They could have sent Robert a selected inventory knowing about the tv shootout and no samsung doesn't make 2 gen any more hence why all but 65 inch in their S90D line is WOLED in Europe. It's always been their marketing strategy. Why would you split OLED and mini led this year? Comes those mini leds lost and bravia 9 would be loser and Sony doesn't want that.

Any reason why lg couldn't turn off the white oled in low luminance? Guess wherever it turns off and on at it would cause some type of problem.

Great job guys, I really enjoyed this post shootout discussion-keep it up Classy. I love the enthusiasm from the new guy, Mike Osadciw. I think it’s gonna take something special for any of the three OLEDs to stand out from the pack in 2025. Sadly for LG, there’s more room for improvement in QD-OLED technology as WOLED might have reached its limits in terms of color brightness and accuracy, though Tandem OLED and Phosphorus Blue OLED are good alternatives.

What calibrations are recommended if an A-95L (or any TV of that matter) is connected to a madVR Envy core type device? It seems that adjustments will overlap and make things worse. Thoughts?

I don't understand why the white sub pixel is needed for low luminance colours. The white subpixel is for boosting brightness, but we are trying to make very dark colours, so why not just turn the white pixel off and let the RGB subpixels handle the dark colours. Maybe there's some reason for it, maybe LG doesn't want to drive the RGB pixels too hard for longevity reasons.

If the goal is to simply emulate the Sony BVM rather than emulating the colour standards, then I would agree Sony could potentially have an unfair advantage at the shootout. An analogy might be Ferrari setting the homologation rules for motor racing leagues in which they compete. Actually this analogy is not right, it would be more like if the goal wasnt to win the race but to see whose car best matches the performance characteristics of the Ferrari. Mercedes might produce a car that can do faster lap times but since that isnt the goal, they would lose. Likewise you could have a display that measures perfect and looks slightly different to the Sony BVM on actual content, and it could lose without us knowing which one was actually truest to the colour standards. On the other hand if the BVM is known to implement the colour standards perfectly on all scenes and content types, then it's a moot point since the BVM and the colour standards are one and the same.

There is a reasonable chance an 83" QD-OLED next year so glad Samsung is improving , if they can up motion and tidy up a few other things. I think it may be one to beat for most people. Hopefully LG display with new layers and materials can up BT2020 as well for their G5 . Why the Samsung and not a Sony 83" QD-OLED , simply price I think many won't pay $2000 more for a Sony than a Samsung. for just a TV ( shock horror , yes end of day it's just a TV and a C5 83" would still be perfectly fine , but a S95E on a good discount is probably worth the extra if you can afford the bit extra or G5 if you like LG ) . The best TV this year in OLED was the G4 83" by default. At 77" for gaming think S95D would make sense for media the A9SL as an all rounder - any of them would be fine get the one you like or is cheapest Looking at forums owners of each of these flagships are mostly really happy . This shootout shows where something is missing , not how much is there. Ie without a Reference what you see may appear perfect for you ie less fussy consumers who buy at a store with no research think their big LCD is great and all they need . Yes they saw the G4 83" in the store, but the got a 85" for 20% of the price and it's much better than the TV that failed the day before ( so needed replacing , reason most people buy a new TV ) . Biggest completion is the 98"/100" that will only get more OLED like YOY

@@BlackJackPoland no that is a WOLED , in my country the 77" ones are WOLED as well, think in USA 55,65 and 77" is QD-OLED. Denis from Digitrends channel suspects an 83" model is coming . So this year definitely no 83" QD-OLEDS . From the product code ( not name ) you can tell if QD-OLED or WOLED varies from each region

@@BlackJackPoland try this search "Is Your S90D a QD-OLED or W-OLED? | They Don't Tell You! Heres The Answer" will get a YT channel . When you check products codes for a seller in Poland should say model number. The S95D 55" and 65" should nearly always be a QD-OLED , Then compare to 83 WOLED model number - a letter should be different. see what the 77" one is, if same as 83" then it's WOLD , if same as 65" likely to be QD-OLED. Actually i think it's for the S90D models that can be either

my take about matte screen: It isn’t typical matte screen and looks black but - that black in ambient light is actually raised and can be measured, we know QD OLEDs in general have had raised blacks in ambient light compared to WOLED - the end result is - raised blacks -> lower the contrast -> flatter the image. That’s a big problem when OLEDs 3D effect is lost because of raised blacks - but the biggest issue - many don’t mention even - it doesn’t need to be direct reflection - ie one that you would see as a reflection on the screen - even more angled sources of light that would not affect gloss panels - raise blacks on this matte screen - which means - any ambient light no matter where will affect the picture quality. That is the biggest reason of me being against it and not getting this, which otherwise I would. But in my case tv is not opposite any window so gloss works perfectly and those who do might prefer sacrificing PQ for watch-ability.
@floz97183 ай бұрын
That's exactly what I am afraid of. I intentionally positioned my TV, so that it doesn't face a window, meaning it is pretty much never illuminated directly by sunlight or any lamps (except in the early morning but I never watch TV then). This means that even though my TV is positioned next to a huge floor to ceiling window, I never have problems watching TV even in full on daylight. The room can be quite bright due to the big window though and illuminate the TV indirectly. I fear that this could be enough to make the S95D look really washed out. Did you test the S95D yourself in at home?
@whitecrowuk5753 ай бұрын
@@floz9718 depends on amount of light, if it’s off angle though it won’t wash out the colors and blacks will look black yet they will be raised so won’t be WOLED black or A95L black. The downside is - you loose a bit of contrast and depth. At home when not compared to other TVs you might not mind it, but when compared it’s noticeable how much more depth gloss has
@Apeshower3 ай бұрын
Do you what movies during the day in bright light or would you look to control the light to mitigate problems first? I have a gloss screen with windows to the side. You can see reflections in bright light. If I had a matte screen Samsung it would like get raised blacks. I don’t know which one would be best but in either case I suspect I would pull a curtain to mitigate. I really do think the matte screen issue is something of a red herring argument because in any instance movie buffs with tv’s of this type will look to control the light first if all cases. Now you are back to image quality and preference. Just my view BTW- I don’t even have an OLED yet but will do around Black Friday and I definitely have no brand loyalty so any are up for grabs and price will probably be he deciding factor.
@whitecrowuk5753 ай бұрын
@@Apeshower if windows are not at specific angle so you see them as a reflection in the screen then shouldn’t be a problem. Of course you will get a little bit from walls reflecting light but it won’t be something that disturbs. Not on newest OLEDs anyways which handle it well. Matte screen on the other hand will have raised blacks - you won’t see any reflections then but the picture will lose its charm - I’m sure you can get used to it - so personal preference really.
