Last year my sister needed a new car and her budget was $20-23K. She looked at used Civic's, Mazda3's and new Jetta Sports. Ended up in this exact car (Sport 6MT), as it was the best value. 3 yr old Civic's and Mazdas with 30K + miles were going for about $21k. She seems to like it and it has been a good car for her.

Hope they go back to automatics. I really like Toyota, but the Corolla hatch I drove had a Cont variable transmission and it was 'mooooing' at me like a cow every time I hit the gas. That off the line delay was a deal breaker.
@nodak81

Both Toyota and Honda aren't nearly the powerhouses of reliability that they were back in the 90's and early 2000's. These days you can go with several brands and have nearly equal odds of a trouble-free ownership experience. You just have to be smart about what you buy and do your research. My mother's Taurus has 240k miles and the check engine light has never even come on once. I love my Prius for the same reason but God help me when something does go wrong. I'll need a PhD in electrical engineering to diagnose the problem.

These are great cars for a first time buyers or for using up miles on. I had the 2019 model and it wasn’t bad. One thing about these VWs is the depreciation and they don’t keep their value at all. So if you’re going to get one you may as well drive it til it breaks. For the price of the car it does come with some pretty good features.

a big take away for anyone shopping this is the ACC can be had with the manual & some other auto journalist were able to achieve 50mpg on a mpg loop... thats a pretty stellar figure. I am concerned about reliabilty/safety as others have mentioned. I wonder if VW will keep with the jetta or drop it giving the brands tragectory towards EV. im currently trying to get out of my MK8 GTI and may end up with one of these. thanks for the review man. been a long time viewer.

This is a lot of car for the $$$. I'd gamble on VW reliability w/ the 4yr50K full warranty. Even the base 'S' model around 22K has most of these features and no silly bottom end hub caps. The Kia/Hyundai, Civic, and Corolla 2.0 N/A base engines felt SO slow compared w/ this base 1.5T. It felt underrated in power and gets incredible mileage if you stay off the boost. I haven't bought yet, but w/ target price of 22-24K, this is at top of my list if I go new.

I keep my cars just about forever and that's why I only choose reliable makes and models. Forcing a company to honor their warranties (as you might have to) can be very hard for owners since those carmakers are well practiced at denying claims. When they do honor them, what should be a 2 hr. repair becomes a 3 month hassle. But good luck to you and enjoy the depreciation on those vehicles, too.

Update...After about a month really experienced the potential of this commuter. The 6spd and the torque are under appreciated. Just completed the breakin oil change. All good but the under body shield removal is a pain after living with easy access panels on previous cars. Again, believe this engine is under-rated, haven't been able find any online dyno vids for this current stock 1.5t but seat of the pants gauge vs past v6 cars I've owned seems to corroborate. Just got the exact trim and color Sport 6spd reviewed. Still so new but initially, really enjoying this car. My expectations were already set given I've owned Toyotas, Mazdas, and Hondas and my parents had VWs. I am more nostalgic about owning an inexpensive car with manual. If someone is more fast and furious then this car isn't going to nearly satisfy. Having all the driving safety suite nannies and connected Android Auto and Carplay helps make this a well rounded commuter for us. I am fairly experienced in doing our car's maintenance so longevity is not as much a concern given this car isn't going to be thrashed. Depends on where a buyer's risk/reward threshold is. Obviously don't pay over sticker with add-ons if you can manage. I intend to thoroughly enjoy this car and also eventually teach our kids to drive a manual with this car. Assuming they will even want to drive 😅 Appreciate the review. Keep doing down to earth reviews!

You'll pay more for those but I'd tend to agree, it's worth it in a few years (usually from resale alone). I do appreciate what VW is able to do with the Jetta at this price point with the 6 speed. Local VW dealer just told me 2024 will be the last year of Jetta manuals. Test drove one, the new car feels inferior to the 6spd MK4 I had; imprecise throws, awkward gear ratios, terrible rev hang. At least the clutch is easy to modulate. Definitely won't miss it - I'd rather drive auto than a half-assed manual.
@Realistick
@Realistick Жыл бұрын
It will be the last year! I think the mazda and honda shifters are better, and the gearing is tall, but I do disagree on the rev hang and imprecise throws. She's no miata for sure and most older cars were more fun, but she's smooth and easy to operate. I think the tall ratios make it feel like the rev hang is awful (that 1-2 shift is a doozy), but that's probably how they got the gas mileage rating to be so high. You should test out the civic hatch before giving up on new manuals!
@kevinnorris6558

Have you considered the new Si/Integra? I have a 2024 Integra with the 6 speed manual and even in the era of rev hang, Honda manages to make a good transmission. I like to think of Porsche making the best manual transmissions with Honda being a close second, which is impressive given how much cheaper Hondas are.

@@Realistick Being a downer wasn't my intention, but the car I drove wasn't uplifting at all. Civic hatches do have Jettas beat but they're 10k more expensive than a manual Jetta in Canada. There is no sense comparing this to a Hybrid. Hybrids will cost $10k more. Assuming a combined avg of 35 mpg for this car and 46mpg for a Hybrid. Using the current avg cost of gas ($3.52) and 12000 mile avg US yearly mileage, it would take over 34 years to break even on the price difference for the gas savings. TLDR this is one of the best values on the market. Many dealers are selling the sport trim for between $21,500-$23,500.

Genuinely, the interior on the new Jetta is the one that the new Golf R should have gotten. The GLI uses the exact same engine and transmission and its significantly cheaper. Was considering a Jetta but man, they really did quite bad on the newest IIHS crash tests. The new tests are pretty stringent, but still not too many vehicles did worse on things like rear passenger safety (pretty important if one has kids). The Audis did fine, which I think is telling about VW/audi. I’m sure this is all due in part to the Jetta being very old, structurally. But it doesn’t inspire confidence. Thank you for mentioning it. VW entices with standard features and a lower base price, not to mention, borderline mid-sized proportions, but do your research when comparison shopping in its class. VW gets your attention with the price, but unless you secure your own car loan with a "good" interest rate, VW Credit will sock you with higher than average rates, and then the stealership adds their own points to the interest rate because their legally allowed to. VW currently is does not have any special lease deals or interest rates deals on the Jetta. It's a cash cow for them, but the Jetta has poor resale value, so unless you get a substantially better monthly payment, it may be prudent to look elsewhere.
