My 2024 has been much like every year of my life so far. I have been hopeless, beaten down and I struggle to want to get out of bed to face a hostile world. I discovered your videos this year and it has been nice to see that someone out there seems to want a better society but I'm a pessimistic realist who sees very little hope of change as every step I have taken in the past to change things for the better, both personally and for society, have ended badly until I have basically given up. I'm glad that some people have had a better 2024 than I but I'm also bitter at that fact too.
@And-i8j3 күн бұрын
2024 was not easy, I run my own business and I think the economy and the country are in a downward spiral with no end. I don’t see matters improving and judging by Labour’s performance so far, I don’t see Labour have the answers to our problems. I attribute our current woes back to 2008, for which we have never recovered and to a succession of politicians who have made grave in-correct. choices and in some cases have committed gross malfeasance in office. Neoliberalism caused the 2008 crisis and it has not gone away.

2024 was the forty fifth consecutive year of neoliberalism. When I had a serious road accident in 1985 on my push bike while going to a chip shop called Papas Fritas in Southport to buy some food before watching the Saturday omnibus edition of Brookside ( 21st December) I definitely used up one of my nine lives. Back then the nightmare of Thatcherism was a mere six years old, had caused critical damage but there was the prospect of ending if Labour could win an election. A mere thirty nine years later neoliberalism is as firmly entrenched as ever thanks to the red Tories who have continued the work of Blair in selling out the majority. I never did eat those chips but have caught up recently on the Brookside omnibus via the STV replays.

Personally, the year from 27th December 2023 was one of my worst ever, dealing with the consequences of events on that date as well as ongoing Long Covid. Even so, some things have improved (including my physical health). Politically, it's gone pretty much as I expected domestically except for Reform getting even bigger, and it's gone worse internationally. So not a lot to cheer about. Still, you have helped my understanding of economics, which is positive.

You popped up in my recommended on YT earlier in the year. I'm glad you did. It's refreshing to hear a positive voice for change. I've been anti austerity since 2010. I've listened to the ideas of Mark Blyth and Yanis Varoufakis. Unfortunately governments are more interested in getting elected than doing what's best in the long term. I can't see anything changing under FPTP.
@indricotherium48023 күн бұрын
I'd like to suggest that unless someone undertakes a lot of work on the psychology of the electorate, there is very little prospect for inspiring change in the MO of the Westminster political class. We saw how easily voters were manipulated in 2024 into holding just one thought - get the Tories out - and actively blocked and discouraged from any simultaneous thought on what we expected, demanded or needed from a change of government (with the all too predictable outcomes we are now seeing).
@paulgibbons23203 күн бұрын

2024 was the year I decided that at 62 I can't keep working in building nor do I want to but 5 years until I get (if) the pension. High interest rates and the election killed the building trade all summer, made a comeback in sept to end of nov then flatlined again after the Budget. Spent the summer and dec renovating my house. What the future brings I don't know as Labour want my savings and are killing the economy to boot. I do know something working in heating, Net zero is killing the west and the poor's chance of a better life so I'm surprised you want to achieve it. I like some of your insights but like many crusading to help the poor you don't seem to want to enable them just give them a bigger share, might be wrong but I'm seeing how big a divide there is that's for sure in means and in thinking.

For 2025, all I want is the planning system reform to get projects green lit. I've had it with protecting newts, we need new homes now, people first. Building homes and upgrading infrastructure are above all else the most important things for the government to focus. Second most important is efficiency in public services, we need to digitise at all levels, automate processes and embrace new technologies (we need to recapture the spirit of 'try, fail, improve' and move away from doing everything by committee). I care less about: - Small boats and legal migrants - Sharing NHS data with AI firms - Regulating AI, that genie ain't going back into the bottle. It's too late. - Big Agri taking over from 'family farmer' - we need to innovation that big agri can bring - Destroying jobs as we transition to renewables; no pain, no gain - we have to go faster

Unfortunately the neoliberal play book and its BS is not confined to the UK; change language and the BS is the same, which is the transfer of wealth upwards. I disagree with you regarding net Zero and electric cars, as it's not possible and a more creative response is necessary as the working class poor will be the ones that will ultimately be priced off the road, and out of the job market.

He takes on everyone and wins.Outlasting almost everyone with panache.The most radical and controversial maybe still to come .Starmer is nothing like this . He always looks as though he is anxious about something. He looks and sounds clerical.
@lonevoice3 күн бұрын
Seems as though you admire Trump. He is dangerous as are very many leaders in the world today. In my view, national leadership by any individual doesn't work. Far too often we see leaders mislead once in power, push the boundaries and the public never really know what they are getting. In the modern era this unpredictability creates risk and is dangerous. Any semblance of stability in the world today is precarious and at some point our luck will run out. The only solution that I can see is for leadership to be in the hands of a small cross party group of MPs (in the case of the UK). They may appoint a chairman and spokesperson to represent the leadership group but the group would have control. They would be appointed by means of some form of PR election, preferably annually and largely electronically (much like the submission of Tax Returns). Having it annually would reduce short terms and enable better long term planning. The above is just a broad outline but in reality is unlikely to ever be implemented. There is no discussion of anything along these lines. The powerful and wealthy influencers wouldn't like it and would interfere. Even if something like this was established in one country it is unlikely to be replicated elsewhere. As you can probably gather, I am not optimistic about the ability of our species to survive. At some point I think that our luck will run out but no-one seems to be concerned so perhaps I shouldn't either in our insane world.
