The Substance is a top 5 film this year. Not only is it a universally loved film but its also getting all the nominations it needs. Besides Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave and Wicked, I just can't see there being more movies that have a better shot at winning best picture. The academy does not often reward these types of movies but the substance is undeniable.

You mentioned BAFTA and a possible nomination for Angelina Jolie in your previous video and I didn't get around to posting that I didn't think that was going to happen and here's why: The British are funny about Maria Callas. When Terence McNally's play Master Class opened in the West End with Patti LuPone as Callas it got bad reviews and closed pretty quickly, which was surprising for a bonafide Broadway hit that had won not just a Tony for Best Play but also a Pulitzer Prize. The reason? The reviewers said, "Well, it's amusing enough but we have no idea who this woman strutting around the stage is supposed to be but she's not Maria Callas." Callas was quite a figure in the decades-long period of just BBC television; the British establishment has a clear idea of who she was and is very protective of her artistic legacy. Also, I think it might be payback for Spencer. Also, glad to see The Substance is doing so well thus far on the longlists, it's not surprising because it's a great film but also, as noted, with Working Title's involvement, a British film and a legitimate hit at the global box office.

This is an extremely cynical way to view the BAFTAs, I am aware, but I am just convinced that Brits don't really appreciate films about African Americans in the same way, simply because the consciousness of the history is less present and it is very much perceived as an American story, and if you want to understand Brits, they will simply dislike things for being too American. This is also the same reason war films do so well at the BAFTAs, because everyone has a grandparent or great uncle who died in the war, everyone has to do their minute silence for the war every year... we're a country who is still very conscious of the wars we went through. This is not to dismiss that Brits cannot understand stories of racial struggle, because that is simply untrue, and we have our own issues and brilliant films which tackle the matter. This is just a nit-pick with your assumption that the BAFTAs don't like African Americans.

This is my ranking for Best Supporting Actor: -Jeremy Strong Jeremy Strong gave the best performance in a supporting role this year. People aren't predicting him because the movie's topic revolves around Trump, which doesn’t make sense to me. I’m only focusing on his performance, and in my opinion, he’s the best of the year. -Kieran Culkin Without a doubt, his performance is the emotional core of the film. Even when he’s silent, you can feel the pain in his eyes, and that kind of depth is incredibly powerful. It impacted me the most. -Guy Pearce I’m not ready to predict him as a winner just yet because I haven’t felt much buzz for The Brutalist so far. However, maybe in a few weeks, people will start to recognize his monumental performance and talk about it more. -Denzel Washington The best part of Gladiator 2 is this man. He completely disappears into the role of the most charismatic and charming villain. He absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination. -Stanley Tucci You have to see him in Conclave-what a performance! This film has been widely praised, and I think Tucci will benefit from that momentum. His portrayal brings real tension to the movie, and his scenes with Ralph Fiennes definitely deserve an Oscar nomination.

A few weeks ago I predicted Deadwyler and Ellis-Taylor missing BAFTA (still thought they'd at least get longlisted) which would create a path for Gomez at the Oscars. Gomez is likely getting GG, SAG, and BAFTA (and Cannes) which I think makes her a strong number 6. If the Academy likes 'Emilia Perez' as much as I think they will, they could over-nominate it and then it's just a matter of waiting for weakness from Rossellini, Qualley, and Jones. Deadwyler seems to be done, sadly, but I can still see a surprise nomination for Ellis-Taylor if 'Nickel boys' overperforms.

Everybody saying Wicked is the Barbie of this year and I'm over here like no its Emilia Perez
@AntsTheaterCorner26982 күн бұрын
@@Jose-sx4ql Good. It's because last year, Barbie was the most nominated film outside of Oppenheimer at the Globes. It walked away with nothing because it's about a toy at it's very core and that's why it failed to win anything. Regardless of Gerwig doing something artistic and stylized, she was still adapting a toy. Wicked doesn't have those roadblocks, it's a musical adaptation and the BAFTAS love those. Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey are also British and their affection for the stage musical is off the charts in the UK. Barbie always had those roadblocks and obstacles to overcome with awards voters that only saw it as a fun summer comedy with very little in the way of substance and drama. Wicked is built around tough themes, strong characters and racial metaphors including fascist regimes that pave a path of political relevancy, especially coming off the heels of the election. This feels more like the Oppenheimer of this year with a splash of Chicago. It's performing similarly in the guilds to Chicago and might pull an upset at the Oscars. Emilia Perez is the Barbie of this year because it's about a dying movement in Hollywood that they're afraid of, the trans movement in this case. They're already afraid of upsetting people because they committed category fraud by including Karla Sophia Gascon in Best Actress when she's biologically male. It's disgusting that they did that and it rubs me the wrong way. Here's hoping Wicked could be the Poor Things of the year and shock everyone at the globes. Just cause they nominated EP in everything, doesn't mean that it will win anything at all. The industry might love it but the Academy and the awards voters must hate it if that's the case. I'm curious to know your thoughts.

My views after the longlist: - Emilia Perez is undeniably an industry favorite. Critics awards don't matter. Saldana's prospect is boosted massively ahead of Grande in Supporting Actress. - Anora, Conclave and The Brutalist are still maintaining strong momentum. Anora is no longer the small film as people claim that usually hard to win the Oscar. Watch out for Conclave though, a dark horse in Preferential Ballot amongsts the older voters. - Wicked's popularity is less well received amongst International voters. It missed out Directing, Editing, Cinematography and Scores. EP fares way better in musical category. Forget about Wicked winning the BP in Oscar. - Congrats to The Substance and A Complete Unknown making to BP top 10 in Oscar. - Jolie path to best actress nomination resembles Kristen Stewart's Spencer run. - Lee is the Nyad of the year lol. - 1 out of Sing Sing, Nickel Boys and A Real Pain will be snubbed out of Oscar top 10. My money is on Nickel Boys. - Bafta is racists towards Aftican Americans work LuL. - RIP September 5, Challengers and Babygirl. The Apprentice and All We Imagine as Light are the dark horse contenders to make BP top 10. - Kneecap will be nominated in Foreign Language and maybe original song.

House of Gucci got in the teens because the long lists were /15 back then. Now it’s /10 and 7 of which are balloted. Emilia Perez is coming.

i know kneecap is in the long list for “outstanding british film” because it was mostly funded by british production companies but god it makes me angry because really it’s just Irish

Right now I believe that Conclave will win the BAFTA and Anora will win at the Oscars. Emilia Perez seems to be to divisive for winning Best Picture

I feel like there's still a chance she could be removed from the Oscar Nominations even if she has all four important nominations, but Selena has a better chance than people think.

BAFTA hated Angelina Jolie while a long ago BAFTA loves Brad Pitt... BAFTA didn't want a "powerful" woman..

All We Imagine as Light could get into Oscar Best Director ❤ and deservedly so. And if she gets in and Villeneuve is out, it would be the cherry on the cake LOL

Sidenote: it would be cool if y'all predicted the NAACP image awards either before or after we get nominees. Because you see some truly inspired picks there
@pdgf2 күн бұрын
What you mean inspired is because there are only a few people of color that can be nominated so they are nominated cause there are no other choices so they get in even if their performance is meh 😂😂😂😂

i think this year we can see that release strategy is really the biggest and tbh one of the only factors when it comes to the awards conversation. in another (better) universe, amazon and a24 don't fumble their releases and sing sing, nickel boys, and the brutalist are undeniable frontrunners, unlike the substance and anora which had great distribution studios and got lucky with timing. while it makes me extremely unhappy, i hope this serves as a lesson to these studios that they can't get away with the ny/la 4 week release and then expand into 12 theatres nationwide in january. here's to a better 2025/26
