It just exists because of the platform it’s built on. There are all-wheel drive models (like the M135) that need that area for hardware.

Agree, looking to buy a car for my daughters who just finished uni. Been looking at a lot of car reviews and this is the best by far. Price straight up and love how Matt gives best alternative to consider, no nonsense everything I want to know about the car I’m looking into.

test drove the LBX, it's outstanding both in driving and built quality. Also where I live Lexus offers 11 years warranty if serviced in the dealership...can't beat that

For the money, one can get a Golf GTI, though not apple to apple, I’d pick the GTI anytime. Used to be more justifiable because of RWD, but those were the days long gone.

I can remember when BMW said rear wheel drive is the only system worth having in a vehicle. Minus badge snobery, this is no better than the average small hatch. 3 cylinder 1.5 DCT and no spare they can keep it.💩

I drove a range of 6 cyclinder, RWD BMW's over 25 years. The new 1 Series is essentially a VW Golf for BMW money. I would purchase an R Line Golf with 4 cyclinders (not 3) and use the substantial savings for something else. Maybe a child's education or a family holiday. BMW design language is no longer European, and that makes it less desirable to me. 3 cyclinders and FWD does not a BMW make. The BMW condition based servicing is great though. I believe other manufacturers over service vehicles in Australia. (Modern high-quality synthetic oils don't need such frequent changes).

@therightcar Even though BMW quote very high theoretical service intervals, I don't think I ever got to more than 15'000km. What I like and agree with is that services should be based more on distance and not default to a time if you have done low mileage.

My kia cred five door is more practical, lower tax band, and it produces the same power. It's more reliable as the BMW has electrical issues like sensors and warning lights on dashboard. It doesn't look like a BMW anymore it's boarder line Japanese style. It's front wheel drive unless you go for the more powerful version. The engine is from the mini.

The biggest mistake was the FWD/AWD replacing the previous gen RWD, especially the 6 CYL M135/M140. Yes i know the reasons given for the change, but this new gen car is not a BMW any more

@@therightcar yeah, an M340i has the B58 which is a lot of fun and punch - and it’s a bigger car and would have more features and usability to be honest since iDrive8 is a bit irritating to use compared to 7. While yeah, not same group of car - still, is it really work it’s price tag?
