Considering a big criticism of current gen consoles is that they are full of remasters of past generation moves, this wouldn't be a wise move. All the Switch Zelda games need are patches for better resolution and a higher framerate. Besides, we still don't have Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, The Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, A Link Between Worlds and Tri Force Heroes on current hardware.

The problem with simply patching all games for the new console is that Nintendo, as a business, doesn’t earn extra cash from that. I do like the idea of the console being inherently backwards compatible, and upgrade patches being exclusively offered to NSO Expansion Pack members, because it solves this problem without being a PR nightmare as you’re suggesting
@EnigmaticGentlemanАй бұрын
As for the ToTK bit in particular, it's development had to have been quite a bit wacky. The pandemic basically shut down Nintendo for at the very least 6 months and it probably took at least another 6 them to get back to normal, and we know they had to take a year just to "polish" it (with polish almost certainly meaning that it needed a ton of optimization to run well on the Switch, we know the game was basically done). That and the game not having started development until 2018, makes me think that the next Zelda will not take quite as long to release
@sunxnesАй бұрын
If this IS a thing, I think it will be a successor only NSO exclusive upgrade or $10-$20 upgrade. My first instinct is that Nintendo would be too afraid of backlash from re-releasing a game at full or near full price that is relatively fresh in their customer's minds.
@lulu1997masterАй бұрын
They could make it part of the Expansion Pack tier - it'd help to push some sales. Also, on that note about Nintendo rereleasing games at full price... it's not as if they hadn't done that for a while on the Switch. Admitedly, this sort of upgrade would be closer to Sony's rerelease of their bigger titles, which hasn't been all that smooth either.
@sunxnesАй бұрын
@lulu1997master precisely my point, this would be akin to the last of us part II re-release, even if that title boasted more than just graphical upgrades.

@danielgrezda3339Ай бұрын
Skyward sword hd was released 9 years after the og launched and twighlight took 10 years and was backwards compatible, so 8 years is pretty realistic for a 60 dollar remaster. I doubt it will be that expensive though, an nso bonus with remasters of other games sounds more likely.
@Etienne.6329Ай бұрын
100%. Nintendo needs to push units of the S2, not sell more copies of BOTW. Nintendo knows people want to play their game at a better resolution and if they offer this upgrade for free, they know millions of people will get the S2 regardless of the launch line-up
@ThisSteveGuyАй бұрын
I think backwards compatibility is going to be a major thing for the Switch successor, with more stable framerates being a key feature of it. Since both systems share the same architecture, this shouldn't be all that difficult. Then on top of that, I can see them charging a little bit for 4k upgrades to titles, which might require a small additional download. Again, it should be relatively easy for them to do all this for many titles because the new system is just running an upgraded version of the same chip the Switch uses; it won't require any emulation. DLSS will allow for 4k from native 1080p or 1440p very easily.
@EnigmaticGentlemanАй бұрын
Yeah I think at absolute minimum we can expect stable 1080p60 fps for all first party games, and they could almost certainly go quite a bit higher. Heck they could do quite a few other enhancements if they were willing to put in a bit of extra effort (at the very least enhanced textures would be easy since they should still have the source textures for all first party games)
@sundhaug92Ай бұрын
Yeah, but iterative improvements rarely sell so there will need to be something else that provides a unique experience
@ThisSteveGuyАй бұрын
Nintendo needs to get up to Series S levels in terms of graphics for the next Switch, anything less would be pointless. DLSS is what will allow them to get there. That and having 4GB more RAM than the S (if those rumors are right). Sure, Digital Foundry may complain about it not being native resolution, but most people will not care, just as long as it's getting AAA 3rd party titles that look good enough.
@ThisSteveGuyАй бұрын
@@sundhaug92 The current Switch has a chip from 2015, so this will be a true generational improvement. Video Games Chronicle reported that Nintendo was showing off the Matrix Awakens UE5 tech demo as a benchmark for the new Switch, and that was originally made to showcase the PS5 and Series X. If that's true, then it means it will be able to play the same 3rd party titles the other consoles get without needing huge graphical sacrifices. That's a pretty big deal and I bet lots of people would be more than happy with that kind of an upgrade. Makes more sense than the PS5 Pro, looking a little cleaner and sharper for $700.

It’s too soon for a BotW remaster, especially given the Switch 2 has backwards compatibility. There are so many Zeldas they could remaster instead that many will otherwise never play. But the S2 enhancing the performance would be great. I agree that upgrades would likely be tied to NSO and hopefully that means no extra or a nominal fee.
@shigerumiyamoto9612Ай бұрын
I see the most likely possibility here is the game just getting an upgrade like many of the other ps4 to ps5 titles we have seen, where users who already owns the game can purchase the upgrade for a small fee. I don't see this being a full price rerelase. I can also see other well performing switch titles like Odyssey getting the same treatment
@Donoby38377Ай бұрын
My hope is that Nintendo does an upgrade program for games similar to xbox. Maybe they can drip feed enhancement patches and showcase them just like NSO titles in directs that way it gives a game like a little mini boost in sales. It could come in handy when building hype too say Xenoblade 4 gets revealed then they show the past 3 games will be enhanced for switch 2. I think that this route also builds goodwill among the fan base so that they don’t get all the heat that Sony had for 10 dollar upgrade patches. But maybe Nintendo will say screw all that and rerelease deluxe versions for full price.

Many people are rightfully pointing out that this is something that Microsoft and Sony do, not necessarily Nintendo, and that's absolutely true. However, I would like to point out that you don't even need to look beyond Nintendo to tell you why this would be an ill-advised move. Remember "Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey"?One could argue that there were a variety of factors in determining the success (or lack thereof) of that particular remake, but I think it's hard to deny that a big anti-selling point was that you could just as easily play the original game on the same hardware. With the recent confirmation that the Switch's successor is backwards-compatible, I find it hard to believe Nintendo learned no lessons from what happened six years ago.

Quick question: I'm told that the sales numbers for Nintendo games are only physical sales? I.e. they do not count digital sales? Also: the case you make for BOTW 4k and OOT 4k are compelling. They will be awesome (and traditional Zelda lovers: If OOT 4K doesn't sell very well, I think traditional Zelda is done as a major line of effort at Nintendo.)
@moyetliciousАй бұрын
The numbers in their own company reports do include digital sales as far as I know, it's the reporting of digital sales to sales tracking companies (like Famitsu in Japan and GfK elsewhere) that Nintendo doesn't do. It's why you see the asterisk next to Nintendo's entries on the monthly NPD charts, because they can only track sales numbers from physical retailers who do share their numbers with them. I can't imagine why Nintendo don't share digital sales numbers with these companies given they do confirm total sales numbers publicly in their quarterly reports, but it's their data and they can be as secretive with it as they like, I suppose 🤷🏼😅

I can see them assigning the upgrade fee to the expansion pass DLC. So you either: - Bought the game + DLC so you get the improved version for free. - Bought the game but skipped the DLC, so you pay $20 to get that extra content + the Switch 2 upgrade. - You're a new player and you have everything included in a $70 bundle.

Highly doubt a seperate remaster of a game already playable on the next hardware is going to happen. A reprint of copies including the DLC and pre-patched with a Switch 2 performance boost to prolong shelf presence maybe, but not some wholesale rerelease or stupid upgrade fee. I feel like the Switch 2 will do just fine with exclusives comparitively

@@Luizanimado You're underestimating what NVIDIA can do with the latest version of DLSS. DLSS Performance mode uses 720p native to reach 4k, and the new Switch should be able to pull that off at the very least. Maybe Digital Foundry will complain about how the pixels look up close, but most people won't care. Remember, this is in docked mode, so it doesn't matter how much power it uses, although DLSS is pretty efficient and it will help with battery life as well.
