Visited Boundary Mills Colne yesterday, on the roundabout at the end of the M65 we were really surprised to see an EG on the Move gas station with Starbucks and .....eight Tesla V4 superchargers but badged up as EGM, out of curiosity we plugged on, no app required, 49 pence a Kilowatt and a reasonable 100kWh to start off. It looks like they are fitting another 8 as well, useful place to stop for a nice coffee or browse the store attached to the petrol station, Spar and a couple of other national food names stuck on the side. We stayed longer than I wished due to the fact it was hailing like there was no tomorrow, welcome to Lancashire !

I thnk you referred to Gretna in Scotland. Just to say that Scotland makes up over a third of the area of Britain. Bristol isn't described as being in "England". Maybe "Gretna in Dumfries & Galloway” or "Inverness the Highlands" would help us Scots feel on a par with England? A small point, but an important one.

Taking advantage of an off peak rate to still be spending the same as petrol... Currently, the answer is simple, all pile on Tesla and hope that the clogging up of the Superchargers indicates to Tesla to build more. While simultaneously hoping that grid connects can be completed in less than four years for each project. Apparently, there are some other CPO's who can't compete on piece that people don't need to use.

My first range anxiety moment just occurred in 2years of EV ownership/road trips (inc 5k to Norway). Following late trip to drop off my daughter at UEA (Norwich) from Manchester, easy 4+ hr run (each way) mostly dual carriageway/3 lanes so delight with Tesla autopilot. Prefer late run to avoid worst traffic, but before overnight lane closures. Going was fine but they’d started road closures early on other side so knew I’d be returning on less ideal back roads. The thick fog was alarming at times but not a problem, though shut off autopilot at peak. Problem really started with SC in central Derby (diverted around yet more closures) the car parking in which housed was closed off (looked unusual). I was low on charge, in unfamiliar place, off route & now feeling tense at 2am. Suddenly, I began to contemplate non-Tesla charging & anxiety grew, where are they, will they work? I reset route home Tesla adapted & set new SC stop (EV point?), really taking my range low. Good news was I recognised the road & was now past many diversions, but range was low & shrinking. The SC was just off route near fuel station, when I saw the row of rebranded V4 Tesla charges I felt tangible relief. I plugged in & charged as usual (except cost more at 65p KW), despite this I was very happy, no longer contemplating failure scenarios. Tesla had saved me again, but the fear/anxiety of non-Tesla chargers I pity everyone reliant on other networks.

Thanks Dave - you seem to be very balanced. I can’t charge at home which is far from ideal. They are a great option for those who charge at home. But prices will almost certainly soar once everyone is in an electric car. But as many people seem to be at best disingenuous with the truth, you’re helping explain realistic charging prices and the variations 👍
@GruffSillyGoat
@GruffSillyGoat 3 күн бұрын
Why will the EV charging price soar with mass ownership, the reasoning is not clear? The main CPO cost drivers are the grid connection cost and standing rate for business electricity, both of these were designed for industry/commercial usage not charging. This is being looked into and will be revised, along with the connection request process itself. Once these cost drivers are resolved then prices should lower as the UK operates a competitive model so prices face downward price pressure (similar to current fossil-fuel pricing). Outside of that road based taxation will shift to a usage based model (pay per mile) for all cars not just EVs. Otherwise as cars get more efficient the tax take will reduce.

After the issues I had with Chargepoint at McArthur Glenn in Bridgend before Xmas I'd never use them again. I have noticed they have rebranded as 'RAW' charging there (still chargepoint on when you check their website) I generally always top up at the Applegreen chargers at Bridgend services, convenient & reliable, not the cheapest but I dislike public charging just because of cost. I've recently had to buy a diesel just for one contract where I'm doing 500+ round trips for 6 months. Much rather use the MG but when the range drops below 200 in winter it just isn't viable to pay public charging prices. When they are at an equivalent level to diesel it will be worthwhile. I don't believe any of the nonsense about 'paying to install infrastructure', prices weren’t higher to build petrol stations & yet they make a profit. Money comes from sales. That can be far more competitive as shown by continental prices. They need to be closer to 30p a KW to compete.

Hopefully picking up a Kona 64kwh tomorrow, we were going to take it to Scotland in two weeks time but the chargers make the cost per mile very expensive! At 80p kwh at motorway services and optimistically getting 4.5 miles per kwh, it would cost us 17.8p per mile whereas my diesel would cost 0.13p per mile at 48mpg. The trip is 1200 miles there and back, taking the Kona would cost £57.60 more! Really think there should be a price cap looked at and a regulatory body put in place, these companies are not paying more than 25p kwh, after VAT we can assume they clear around 42p per kwh profit. Strange they're allowed to sell electricity for more than they pay for it yet campsites can't!

You need to do a bit more research. Most, if not all of charge place Scotland chargers are 55p kwh or 51p kwh if your electric is with Octopus & using the electroverse app/card. I used tesla supercharger for my Skoda Enyaq (non tesla ev) at Gretna Green last week, and that was 51p kwh. Get the electroverse card even if your not with Octopus energy as it covers almost all CPO's. Bear in mind that if you charge at home your going to get max miles on 100% charge for probably £5.
@ukinfamous
@ukinfamous 2 күн бұрын
@peterlucy1519 I don't need to do any more research, I can charge at home for 5p kwh with Tomato Energy, used zapmap and can see the prices of the motorway services. Fact remains, prices should be capped, a campsite can not charge more than they pay for electricity so they can cover the cost of metering but these big companies can make an obscene markup.

Hi dave, loving the content, the only issue i have with these apps is that we have to install yet another app and the company gets the benefit from it, yes the price can be decreased slightly but these companies need to stop being so greedy. Yes they have invested large sums of money but trying to recoup that money far too soon by charging the earth...this is not going to help anybody with the switch to EV. I have an ev on order at the moment and pricing is a massive let down for anybody regardless of ice or ev cars. Down the road there is 2 garages right next door to eachother one is shell and the other is GO...shell is far too expensive and the station is pretty much empty whilst the GO literally next door is full must of the day. This approach needs to be replicated in the ev charging sector. Atleast with electric power, companies cannot pull the wool over people's eyes and say there's great additives in this petrol which will help your engine live longer and so on......😂 Ev power they can't possibly use any such excuse for this. Another point is they don't have all the transportation costs as it's passed through cabling instead of tankers! Can you organise a petition with your growing following and see we can all do to fight the prices? :)
@djtaylorutube

Replace transportation costs with grid connection costs. Have you priced up a 1 MW connection recently?
@lr9747
@lr9747 3 күн бұрын
@djtaylorutube no but it's not going to be an every day cost is it? How many tankers visit petrol stations every week? The connection would be expensive i bet but surely it can't be anywhere near as expensive as transporting petrol and diesel every day :) If you can find out how much it costs to do this and then compare it to a 1 time grid connection then that might be a good discussion :)
@djtaylorutube
@djtaylorutube 3 күн бұрын
@@lr9747 I don't know what the difference would be, yes fun comparison to do but after pricing up a three phase domestic connection with about 50m of trenching was enough. Then there's the equipment, those high power chargers aren't cheap. Finally add in the investors who want a quick return and an exit strategy, they're not in it for the long game.
@lr9747
@lr9747 3 күн бұрын
@djtaylorutube you do have a point yes, but then what about the consumer? Surely the government should step in and basically say stop being greedy with them pushing for the quick EV turnaround mandate? Completely get what you're saying with it all i agree. @djtaylorutube
@djtaylorutube 3 күн бұрын
@lr9747 Maybe but at what cost? Let's remember that it's a previous Conservative government that privatised the utilities, distorted the pricing model to the marginal system we have today and hence the ridiculously high prices being demanded by peak plants, owned by foreign companies that hold us to ransom before agreeing to power up, like two did a couple of weeks ago. £12 million paid to two gas generators for three hours of generation. Seven Trent Water: "Bills will rise oh and we're paying more in dividends...". Then we all scream and complain while forgetting that our pensions are invested in these companies. What to do? 🤷

There are an awful lot of charger networks. Including many not featured. Do you think there will be some consolidation in the coming years? We appear to be in a bit of a land grab phase at the moment. But this usually ends up with companies then looking to expand by buying out their competition.

Am fairly new to ev getting my Renault Scenic mid October and loving it, at the moments I charge at home and a little in work for nothing , was told they are free to use by employee although they are mainly a tax perk for company cars do ì ďont go mad, my question is why are public charges so high and do they need to be so high, is it down to the cost of the charges or are these companies just trying to make as much as they can. The government are pushing for net zero although starting road tax and this supper tax on cars over £40000 which most ev are ,the the talk of being charged per mile as they are not getting the revenue like they make on ice cars, ev charging on cheap electricity but it's cheap becouse it's excess. Ops gone on a bit of a tangent but love to know why and what people's thought. Am with octopus and they changed my tariff twice as sometime I charge a couple of times a week then nothing for a week to ten days I posted on a octopus forum and removed my post becouse of nasty replies . If you had a choice 80p ,7p or free per kw what would you choose

I have just getting a Tesla AWR and before I took the plunge I did some calculation. Cannot beat a good spreadsheet. My diesel BMW seres 3 tourer 320D average over the 70000+ miles 49.8 miles per gallon. I am now retired and I on average doing 700 miles a month. and I paying around £80 in diesel. So I calculated that I will do around 175 KWh per month and if I get 4 miles a KWh. It would cost me, if I charge at home with Octopus Intelligent Go £12.25. So a good saving. Sadly my driving style will mean it will be worse. Still was the point have having a fast car if you are not going to enjoy it. Time will tell. But it all goes horribly wrong once charging on the road. Anything over 46p KWh and I am paying the same as diesel cost. Around the average price for a fast charger say 80p it around £140 per month. Yes you can get 30p if you charge with 22KWh charger but who want to sit for hours to get any decent range so you have to go to the expensive Ultra Fast Charger route. Dave you spoke that petrol and diesel is much more expensive on the motorway which is correct but usually a couple miles off at a junction you find cheaper fuel prices or the car will be doing 500 miles before filling up. Over my 70000+ miles I never used a motorway petrol station. Thats not the case with chargers. You mentioned that in France it's a lot cheaper. Now we come to the crux that we pay the most in Europe for electricity. Until that drops considerably people will not be buying into electric cars. Sadly that going to be a least a decade away. The average person who hasn't a drive to charge their car could not afford the costs.
@johnbaker5533

The 'average' person would charge at home and only occasionally fast charge. Overall for the year it is cheaper even if you choose to pay 80p rates. Many chargers are cheaper than that.

I wouldn't pay £15 for a coffee and sausage roll at Tebay. I'd charge up there, then leave Tebay services using the staff exit/entrance, and get a coffee and sausage roll from the village shop in Orton for around £4.50, just 4 minutes drive from the M6....then re-join the M6 using the same services staff entrance..... Excellent cafe in Orton too - it's won National awards - with food prices around 50% to 60% of what Tebay services charge.

I’m saving even more by not purchasing an EV in the first place … no MASSIVE DEPRECIATION despite only do the low miles owners do ( they give up going anywhere ) and range anxiety thinking of where the next petrol station is isn’t something to consider , then there’s the ‘luxury car tax’ as all EVs fall above the £40,000 limit then there’s I can service /repair it at the local garage , can’t take it on a ferry , and unlike a Porsche can charge it at home … you really must need an IQ test to purchase an EV with your own money

Luxury tax applies to ICE cars equally, has done so for a while, plus the hugher tax bands that typically apply to expensive ICE cars with their larger engines. Of course the government has stated they're reviewing the previous governments decision to bring EVs under the same luxury definition as ICE. In all likelihood EVs will get a higher luxury threshold point than ICE. As to ferries, best to read the actual announcement and not the spin. The ferry companies haven't banned EVs they just extended the non-refueling T&Cs that applied to ICE cars to electric vehicles/devices of all types (scooters, bikes, generators and EVs) stating these cannot be charged onboard.

I’m not impressed by any of that. We have been conned with zero rd tax for small cars and evs. Now there’s enough of them about no more zero rd tax. Same with charging. All of a sudden charges are rocketing. Make a profit but taking the piss discourages people from buying evs. I have an ev but only because it was a bargain and I get free charging at work. Otherwise may as well stick to petrol.

Are you equally conned by the “buy one get one free” offers at supermarkets? What a load of utter twaddle. Do you demand they are there for all time or do you just make use of them to save money while they are there? Discounts and offers come and go all the time and are there to serve a purpose. Anyone who thinks they are there permanently are delusions.

So say 50mpg petrol £1,271.20 for 10000 miles. So anything 38p or less is cheaper if you can’t charge at home. And if you can it depends how much you need to charge while out so the price can go up.
