I tested the sport touring civic vs hybrid accord and purchased the civic instead. Highly recommend you try a sport touring vs sport.

This is truly a nice vehicle! A Prius fighter minus the AWD but with better room & practicality (Prius has that low sloping rear roofline).

50PM with a car that can generate 200HP and 232 lb ft or torque is insane. The civic might not get the same MPG as a prius, but the trade off for power more than makes up for it.

My sister is cross shopping the two. I'd vote civic but she likes the look of the prius

Great car and the sport hybrid is the sweet spot for me. My only gripe is the crappy infotainment and lack of wireless Android Auto/Carplay. When most base model cars these days have wireless AA/Carplay and larger screens, it just makes you shake your head.

It's not a compact car - it has almost the same interior space as a Camry (114 ft^3 to 115 ft^3). Its feature set is aimed at the same market that other makers reserve for smaller cars (Corolla, 102 ft^3). So fewer features than an Accord. There are two definitions of an Electric Vehicle, or EV. The popular one, and the correct one. The popular one is a car that stops at a charging station, but not a gas station. Some will begrudgingly allow you to use the name for a car that can stop at either. The problem is, this describes how you use the car, not the car itself. The correct definition is a car that uses electric power for propulsion. Some HEVs use a mixture of mechanical and electric power, _but_ _this_ _one_ _does_ _not._ In any situation where you need power, this operates, in every way, as an EV. The only conceptual difference between its acceleration, and a Tesla's, is that it adds a generator to the battery. (It also doesn't use a ridiculously over-powered motor which, to tell the truth, probably reduces a Tesla's range by about 10%.) So it isn't (8:04) "almost like you're driving an electric vehicle," it is _exactly_ like one. Because it is one.

Thank you for watching and commenting! I should have done a better job with my air quotes on "compact vehicle" because as you say it's not exactly all that compact despite being labeled as such lol. As for the way the Civic Hybrid drives, it does drive almost like an electric vehicle and not exactly like one because while it is primarily powered by the traction motor (electric), unlike a traditional EV the power of the instantaneous torque in the Civic Hybrid can vary when you quickly accelerate from a stop. I'm not entirely sure why, but I suspect that it's due to the battery's state of charge which can be anywhere from 30-70% over a 5-minute period. Sometimes, whether the engine is on or off it quickly jumps off the line and other times there's a split delay as the engine revs up. Also, at freeway speeds there are certain conditions where the Civic Hybrid will drive exclusively via the internal combustion engine and not the electric motor. I really tried to figure out what exactly activated this but I couldn't... but by looking at the car's power management system you can see how the power is being delivered and recovered. There's also another condition where a hybrid can feel almost nothing like an EV and that's when you've completely depleted the battery. This is extremely rare and unlikely but could happen if you were say, driving uphill at a decent gradient with speed for a few miles. The electric motors can output around 200 horsepower but the ICE can only provide around 130. The additional power comes from the battery pack but if it's fully depleted, you've only got power from the ICE. Under such conditions, the engine is pushed and gets quite noisy and power delivery feels quite sluggish. Finally, an EV has significantly more regenerative braking power than a hybrid like the Civic. I actually think that the Accord Hybrid provided almost as much as a pure EV but the regenerative braking in the Civic is nowhere near what you get in the Accord despite the shared powertrain. Even if it were stronger like an EV though, the Civic Hybrid does not have the option of bringing the car to a complete stop using regenerative braking alone like you could with most EVs.

@@SeanChandler “You say it's not exactly all that compact despite being labeled as such lol.” I’m not sure that Honda does label it. They aim it at the same market where others’ labels are “compact.” But in size, it compares to the Camry. “It is primarily powered by the traction motor (electric) [but] the instantaneous torque in the Civic Hybrid can vary when you quickly accelerate from a stop.” No, it is _powered_ by a battery and generator. A motor is part of the transmission, not a source of power. For example, it's efficiency should never be compared to that of an engine, since it does not initiate a power stream (and is not subject to the Carnot cycle). But have you tried SPORT mode? Response is dampened in ECON and NORMAL to help with economy. And the engine doesn’t need to “rev up,” since it is started by the 145 HP generator. “Also, at freeway speeds there are certain conditions where the Civic Hybrid will drive exclusively via the internal combustion engine.” It’s called “overdrive." If the driver calls for anything more than about 40 HP, it disengages this mode instantaneously. “Finally, an EV has significantly more regenerative braking power than a hybrid like the Civic.” This is true. Because the battery can’t accept charge at as high a rate. I don’t know why the Civic has fewer levels than the Accord. I was talking about acceleration. “The Civic Hybrid does not have the option of bringing the car to a complete stop using regenerative braking alone like you could with most EVs.” No car does. Regen Braking force is proportional to speed. Any EV that can stop the car, is adding either friction or powered reverse thrust.

The current Accord has been botched so badly aesthetically. It looks like a Chevy and wanna be German from the rear. I rather get this Civic model or the 2016 Accord Sport or Touring trim.

This wouldn’t affect anyone buying a 2025 Civic manufactured since September 2024, as those have the fix already implemented.
